China manufacturing Guangzhou, China when millions of workers didn t return to their southern China factory jobs after Lunar new year holidays, it marked a turning point for foreign manufacturers. Companies were already under pressure from rising raw material costs, restive workers and lower payments for exports because of a stronger Chinese currency. Despite wage increases, labor shortages kept getting worse as workers increasingly spurned the often repetitive unskilled jobs that gave China a reputation as the world s low-cost factory floor. Plantations in Thailand, Indonesia, and Malyasia are anticipating as much as a 60% drop in latex production. The International Rubber Study Group estimates as much as 60% of the world s rubber consumption will be used to supply China s demand for automobile tires. One of the most significant weather woes is flooding in Thailand as reported by Reuters on March 30th. Flooding in Thailand kills 21, strands thousands (Adds mudslide kills 10, rubber shipment delayed) BANGKOK, March 30 (Reuters) - Severe flooding and mudslides in southern Thailand have killed 21 people, stranded thousands of tourists and threatened to delay shipments of rubber in the world's largest rubber-producing country, authorities said on Wednesday. Rubber shipment delays of several weeks were possible. The southern region supplies 90 percent of the 3.2 million tonnes produced annually in Thailand, the world's biggest producer and exporter. "Small producers along the upper south, who need to carry rubber by road to be shipped from Bangkok's port are facing disruption as roads are cut off," Prapas Uernontat, secretary general of the Thai Rubber Association told Reuters. The continuation of demand exceeding supply has created unprecedented price changes for all cotton related industries. Almost all the factories are operating a full capacity, but it will take time to get back to inventory levels that we are accustomed to. Some forecasts endorse that we have not yet seen the end of these price increases. Eyewear pricing should remain stable through the summer. Any adjustments in the Fall would be due to currency fluctuation, raw materials, or increased freight rates. With eyewear production being more automated than gloves or garments, it is impacted less by dramatically increasing labor rates in Southeast Asia.
