2 Dementia and Journaling: Tracking the Journey By Ava M. Stinnett You ve probably heard or read about the benefits of keeping a journal. Perhaps it was Oprah recommending that you record five things that you re grateful for every day, or maybe it was a teacher or counselor who viewed journaling as a way to clarify your thoughts and feelings and to help solve problems. Regardless of the reason, there are great benefits to journaling, especially if you ve been diagnosed with dementia or you re a caregiver to someone who has been diagnosed. Scientific evidence supports journaling. While the left side of your brain, which is analytical and rational, is occupied, the right side is free to create and feel. Expressing feelings in writing isn t just a good way of tracking the progress of dementia and looking for specific trends; it s also a tool to help orient the person with dementia. When dementia starts to make it difficult to find the right words, writing can reduce feelings of powerlessness and provide a way of processing the changes that are occurring. Whether living with a dementia diagnosis or being a caregiver, starting a journal may seem overwhelming. It may be helpful to use a sensory image, a list, or a sentence starter. In her book You Want Me to Do What? Journaling for Caregivers (2008), B. Lynn Goodwin provides 200 open-ended sentences, such as, I feel... or I remember the time... or I wish my family knew... to help you get started. Although the book was written for caregivers, many of the prompts work just as well for someone in the early stages of dementia. Here are some more simple tips to keep in mind: Memory Corner Start with the day, the date, and the year. Include a brief description of the weather if you feel moved to do so. Allow just 15 minutes to write, perhaps first thing in the morning, to develop the ritual of writing. Forget about grammar, spelling, and punctuation! Just let the feelings and words flow, whether it s one sentence or an entire page. Technology can be useful if handwriting is too difficult. A tape recorder, video camera, typewriter, or computer can provide the means for continuing the routine of journaling. If the loved one feels that the journal is private, it s important to respect that, despite a desire by the caregiver to look for changes in the stage of the disease. Goodwin says that it doesn't matter if what s recorded is legible or not. Journaling provides both the caregiver and care recipient the opportunity to reach beyond themselves and communicate their complicated thoughts and feelings. It s a way to give a voice to conflicting emotions in a safe way. Article Resources Botek, A-M. Dear Diary: Journaling for Caregivers. Retrieved from Goodwin, L. B. (2008). You Want Me to Do What? 12 By Ruby McDonald Here we are going into the second quarter of the rest of our lives and I m wondering how many of us have learned to take charge of our own futures? It s so easy to just bump along, taking what comes and wondering why the same things keep happening to us. How many of us fully realize the power that we carry around with us, mostly untapped and deteriorating from nonuse. Many of you will know that I am referring to brainpower. rather than allowing our minds to run free with worry, anger, and other negative emotions that minimize our chance to be healthy, gain peace of mind, and have lasting happiness. Always Empowered, Always Young There is no magic formula or age limit. We just have to take charge and become the CEO of our own lives. How do we do that? Many people start out their day with prayer or meditation and end it the same way. In addition to prayer and meditation, we can examine our thought process to insure that we have not formed the habit of looking at life through negativity. Here s one way to test yourself : Ask yourself if you see a glass of liquid half full (positive thinker) or half empty (negative thinker). Also, being critical and not accepting of others comes from negative thinking. Seeing the good in people and being able to compliment and help them when needed is being a positive thinker. Another positive attitude shows when we are friendly to a new person who enters your environment, such as when a new resident moves in to your community. Remember how it feels to be the new kid on the block. Those feelings seldom change just because we are older. Our brain is like a computer. It is waiting for us to learn how to use it and then it will perform for us. Our brain/mind needs specific instructions from us so that it knows exactly how we want it to perform. It doesn t care if our input is negative or positive; it will perform either way. That s why it is so very important to insure that the input is positive. Positive input comes from everything we do and think. It includes the people we see every day, the movies we watch, the books and newspaper we read, the amount of world news we watch, and etc. I know that often life becomes difficult, as we grow more seasoned. Loneliness and illness are not much fun to live with, but again, we make the choice in how we are going to deal with them. First of all, I encourage you to focus on and be grateful for the time you had with your loved one never focus on the loss. Secondly, never take possession of an illness by referring to it as My. Treat it as the uninvited guest that it is, look at it as an inconvenience and determine to live your life in a positive manner. One of my favorite quotes from Dr. Wayne Dyer goes something like this: I d say that sums it up pretty well. As always, we are left to make our own free choices and we are also left to live with the results of those choices. I have found that it takes less energy to live a positive life and to be the CEO of my own life.. Einstein said, "We cannot solve our problems using the same thinking we used when we created them.
