1 SECTION 1: GENERAL GEAR CHECKING GUIDELINES 21 Gear Checking Guidelines that apply across all PCAWA activities. Divided into three sections PCAWA Uniform Rider Dress General PCAWA The Horse & Pony General PCAWA Saddlery General PCAWA UNIFORM RIDER DRESS GENERAL MEDICAL POLICY: all active participants (Riders, Competitors, Officials, etc.) at PCAWA activities are strongly advised to carry on them, or have with their Team Manager or accompanying adult, up to date information regarding current or previous medical conditions which could require treatment in the future (e.g. Epilepsy, Asthma, Diabetes) or affect the emergency treatment of serious accidents (e.g. allergies or previous head trauma). Any rider who has, or recently had, a medical or physical problem that could impair safe participation in an Activity, must provide an up to date Doctor s Certificate confirming his/her fitness to take part. This Certificate must be produced at the Gear Check prior to the commencement of each activity. RIDERS AND HEAT STRESS: It is up to the Judge/Examiner/Coach to give permission for a rider to remove their jumper (if hot). Use of neck wraps soaked in cold water and placed at back of neck under shirt collar is a very effective way of cooling. Participants (for their own safety) should listen to their bodies and retire from participation or competition if affected by the heat. Clubs need to observe riders with this problem and consider Risk Management practices of allowing them to ride in hot conditions. (Formerly p.22, Section Rider Dress General). A RIDER WEIGHING MORE THAN 53 KILOGRAMS (8 STONE 5LBS) DRESSED TO RIDE, MAY NOT RIDE A PONY 12.2 hands or under IN ANY ACTIVITY. FORMAL / OFFICIAL PONY CLUB UNIFORM Safety Helmet, Shirt, Tie Jumper - Sleeved or Sleeveless, in Club/Zone colours, Beige/Bone/Fawn/White Jodhpurs / Breeches, Badge and Disk where permitted (optional for competition), Fawn/Bone/Beige/White Riding Trousers where permitted, Short or Long Riding Boots, Club/Zone Saddle Cloth/Numnah, Club/Zone Hat Cover. TEAM MEMBERS, PAIRS, MUST WEAR EITHER MATCHING LONG SLEEVED JUMPERS OR SHORT SLEEVED JUMPERS. Many Pony Clubs have special Polo/Rugby Tops, Windcheaters and coloured/dark Jodhpurs / Breeches for their Rally uniform. These are not the formal / official Pony Club Uniform and are NOT to be used at any other Pony Club activity. Rugby Shirts may be used for Cross Country and Prince Philip Mounted Games, please refer to the Eventing, Tetrathlon and Prince Philip Mounted Games Sections in this Manual.

2 2.1 PROTECTIVE HEADGEAR & FITTING 22 When to wear: o The helmet should be properly fitted and fastened under the lower jaw when riding and handling horses. o The Helmet must not be removed for saluting or for presentation of awards o The wearing of Safety Helmets around horses/ponies in yards/tie up areas is strongly recommended What to wear: o The wearing of a correctly fitting and secured Safety Helmet which complies with the requirements of the current ASA / NZS 3838 is compulsory. o Also acceptable are Safety Helmets which comply with one of the following standards: PAS 015 (UK) ASTM F 1163 (USA) VG1 (Europe) EN 1384 (Europe) only acceptable for helmets manufactured to Dec 2015 o Bicycle Helmets are not permitted o Helmet cameras not permitted. o The use of Fly Nets for Riders and Coaches is permitted o Peaks on Helmets are optional o May have cover in Club/Zone colors. Fluffy Beanie Hat Covers are NOT permitted for PC members / PC Riders as they are not pony club uniform. o Use of a Detachable Sunshade is optional How to care: o Impacts: Any Helmet that receives a moderate to serious impact, must be replaced o Age: Follow manufacturer s instructions. i.e. ASA/NZS 3838 advises that helmets have a usable life of 5 years, and those that are used very frequently may require earlier replacement. o Procedure to check age: look inside helmet, inside helmet lining and to the side of the helmet. Year of manufacture should be shown, as also the helmet standard that the helmet meets. Store helmets away from heat and direct sunlight and be aware that the helmet may be damaged and rendered ineffective by cleaning agents HEADGEAR FITTING GUIDE It is important to choose and wear the correct size helmet as the wearing of a poorly fitting or incorrectly adjusted helmet may lead to the helmet coming off the rider s head. Do NOT wear the helmet if a proper fit is not achieved. The helmet should sit approximately ½ to ¾ inch or 1-2cm above the eyebrows. See pictures below. Put on the helmet and stand in front of the mirror. Rock the helmet both backwards and forwards without moving your head your helmet is a reasonable fit if the skin on your forehead (and your eyebrows) moves with the helmet. Tighten the throat strap and rear straps by pulling the spare end(s) of the strap through the buckle until a firm yet comfortable fit is achieved. Do not over tighten straps. Helmets fitted with rear straps should be adjusted so that they sit just on or below the earlobe. Ensure all parts of the retention harness are properly adjusted tension should be firm and evenly distributed among both front and rear straps.

3 After fitting as above, grasp the helmet and try to rotate it front and rear. A correctly fitted helmet should be comfortable and should not move forward to obscure vision or rearward to expose the forehead. 23 INCORRECT WEARING POSITION CORRECT WEARING POSITION All Clip Fasteners (particularly the smaller ones on the Shiny Cuddly Pony type helmets) are clicked up securely as it has been known for some to come undone whilst the rider is performing an activity. 2.2 SHIRTS Long sleeved, in Pony Club colour/s, fastened at the wrist and tucked in to waistband of Jodhpurs / Breeches/riding trousers. CHAPETTES CHAPETTES ARE PERMITTED AT RALLIES ONLY Commonly suede material Riders must practice without chapettes prior to Efficiency Certificates and Competitions 2.13 SPURS GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT SPURS: A spur is a metal tool designed to be worn in pairs on the heels of riding boots for the purpose of directing a horse to move forward or laterally while riding. It is usually used to refine the riding aids (commands) and to back up the natural aids (the leg, seat, hands and voice). The spur may be used in several equestrian activities/disciplines. The parts of a spur include: The yoke, branch, or heel band, which wraps around the heel of the boot. The shank or neck, which extends from the back of the heel band and is the area that usually touches the horse The rowel, seen on some spurs, is a small revolving wheel or a disk with radiating points (Tines/spikes) at the end of the shank. There are restrictions on their use in PCAWA. The spur Must be smooth metal or plastic. There must be a shank pointing only to the rear, can not be offset nor curved inwards and arching toward the horses sides. Length must be not more than 4 cm long. The end must be blunt in order to prevent wounding a horse. If the Shank is curved, the spurs must be worn only with the shank directed downwards. Straps must be correctly fitted with buckles to the outside. Spur Ends optional, must have one on each spur if used. Spurs capable of wounding a horse are forbidden.

For all other activities equestrian body protectors are optional but recommended. If worn, must be correctly fitted. When correctly fitted, the Body Protector should cover the whole circumference of the torso. The bottom edge should be not less than 25mm below the rib cage anteriorly and should reach the pelvis laterally. Posteriorly, the edge should be not less than 15cm below the level of the top of the pelvis on an average adult. The arm inlet should be approximately circular and of minimum dimensions. The top of the protector should just reach the level of the seventh cervical vertebra (the prominent bone at the base of the neck). The front of the protector should reach the top of the sternum. The Body Protector and shoulder Protector (where present) should between them cover the lateral 75% of the collarbone.

12 32 Diagrams showing the coverage that should be provided by a Body Protector Front Back Except for custom cuts Fit and Adjustment: the vest is designed to fit snugly over light clothing. Dimensions to determine size are indicated in the above diagrams. (Spine length is determined by measuring from the base of the neck to the tailbone where the seat separates). Where size ranges overlap, try on the closest sizes to determine the most comfortable fit. Although allowances have been made for adjustment at side and (where applicable) at shoulders, the adjustments made should not be to the extent that protection provided will detrimentally affect safety concerns or provide an incorrect fit. Outside dimensions of the vest allow for approximately 2.5cm of overfit. The style and purpose for which the vest will be used will also affect outside dimensions, i.e. custom sizing or special purpose vests.
