Skin cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in Australia. It occurs when skin cells are damaged, for example, by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Australia has some of the highest levels of UV radiation in the world, mainly because of our proximity to the equator. UV radiation levels vary throughout the year according to the height of the sun (the higher the sun is in the sky, the higher the UV radiation level), whether you are in the northern or southern part of the country, the amount of cloud cover, altitude, ozone levels and the presence of UV reflective surfaces such as light coloured concrete, water and snow. The UV Index is a simple and informative way of describing the sun s UV radiation intensity. Skin can burn in just 15 minutes in the summer sun. Generally, UV radiation levels are most intense around the middle of the day (10am to 2pm or 11am to 3pm during daylight saving).
