2 MAKE YOUR OWN NATURAL, SAFE & CHEAP CLEANING PRODUCTS USING ONLY 11 INGREDIENTS FROM YOUR CUPBOARD These days many of us are cleaning up our acts. We are becoming more conscious of looking after our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. Many people are becoming more aware of the importance of looking after our physical bodies, the amount of exercise we are getting and the quantity and quality of the foods we eat. We are becoming more aware of the importance of living as stress-free as possible, allowing ourselves time to relax so we can regenerate and rejuvenate. We are becoming more knowledgeable about the inner resources of our minds and the powerful changes we can make using our mind power. We are also becoming more environmentally aware and the importance of sustaining the delicate eco-balance in which we live. One important way to begin to clean up your own life is to become more conscious and particular about the type of cleaning products you are using in your home and work environment. Our bodies and our health are susceptible to the products our skin comes into contact with and also the unseen fumes and residues floating in the air. Is your home filled with toxic fumes from the chemicals of commercial cleaning products you are using? Or is your home and work area filled with the gentle scents of essentials oils, white vinegar, bicarb soda, lemons and other natural cleaning products? Recent studies have shown that often the insides of our homes are just as polluted, if not more polluted, as the outside air. Inside our homes we are inhaling a variety of pollutants known as VOCs (volatile organic compounds), which are found in plastics, synthetics, paints, furnishings, glues, floor coverings, moulds, mildew, animal hair, dust mites, laser printers, photocopiers, cosmetics and solvents to name just a few. Volatile Organic Compounds are carbon-based chemicals that release emissions at room temperature. Constant exposure to these compounds can cause health problems. 2 P a g e w w w. c l e a n a n d g r e e n g u i d e. c o m

3 Potential health risks related to polluted indoor air include: Headaches Coughing and sneezing A general feeling of tiredness Dizziness Eye irritations Runny nose Sore throat Skin rashes and irritations Allergic reactions which can include asthma Colds and flu Research has shown that an effective way to counteract some of the effects of these pollutants is to have living plants inside your home. Suggestions of plants to use are: Peace Lily Boston Fern Dwarf Date Palm Aloe Vera Marginata Weeping Fig Happy Plant Kentia Palm Some essential oils, such as Lemon and Tea Tree, have also been shown to reduce the effects of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when used in cleaning products, air freshener blends or in diffusers. Cleaning products that are essential oil based reduce the impact of VOCs in the home environment. Information on the planetgreen.com website states that: Persistent exposure to the toxic chemicals many common household products contain can wreak havoc with your central nervous system, leading to brain fog, breathing difficulties, and even sudden mood changes. And, because their bodies are still developing, babies and children are particularly vulnerable to low levels of neurotoxins, which have been linked to everything from developmental abnormalities to cancer. Improving the Air Quality in Your Home (adapted from Brisbane City Council Green Home Fact Sheet Clean Air Indoors) Use doormats to keep the dust from your shoes outside your home. Less dirt in the home also means less sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming, which means less work, water, energy, and fewer chemicals. Make sure there is good air flow through your home and it is well ventilated Choose products that are low in toxic chemicals Choose solid wood furniture that is made from certified sustainable forests Choose furnishings that have low toxic chemical residue Use green eco paints with low or zero toxic emissions Use green cleaning products You will feel the energy shift in your home when you begin to use conscious cleaning choices. Many of the essential oils used in How to Make Your Own Natural, Safe & Cheap Cleaning Products are calming and uplifting, balance the emotions, relax the mind, and are antibacterial, antiseptic, antimicrobial and antifungal. The power of your intent is very important in negating and overcoming the old energies in your home. Make your home your sanctuary. 4 Is your furniture in an easy and flowing arrangement, does the art on your walls uplift your soul, does the music you play bring a sense of peace and relaxation? Everything has an effect on your overall health and wellbeing. I have four sons and when my children were young I discovered lots of natural home remedies for their bumps and bruises. This led into the discovery of essential oils and other natural and safe alternatives. My experimenting then expanded into making my own body soaps. I added different herbs, natural clays, essential oils for their healing properties and fragrances, natural exfollients, almond husks, wheatgerm..you name it and I usually experimented with it. Some soaps were a great success, some not so good!! I broadened my field of experimentation from soaps into essential oil body sprays, concentrated oil blends, natural body scrubs, bath salts and bath milks, foot soaks and then onto the natural home cleaning products. It has been a fun, fascinating and completely enjoyable journey.with the discoveries still continuing. I began studying different alternate therapies including meditation, aromatherapy, nutritional healing, counselling and hypnotherapy. Through my studies I have gained a deeper understanding of the mind-body connection and how one can affect the other. I realised the importance of looking after ourselves on every level: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. When one area of our life is out of kilter this then affects many other areas of our lives as well. Everything is linked in the gentle energy flow of life. Cleaning is a part of everyday life. Why not make it enjoyable and healthy, knowing that you looking after your body as well as the natural resources of our beautiful Mother Earth. She supports us with her air, water and food, we need to support and sustain her as much as possible. Change happens one step at a time. I hope you enjoy your own journey in discovering natural ways to keep your home clean and healthy. Many of the ingredients used in How to Make Your Own Green Cleaning Products are probably already in your pantry, or are available at your local supermarket or health food store. Even though all the ingredients are natural and safe to clean with, remember to label all your products and keep out of reach of children. Have fun as you create healthy cleaning solutions that are safe for you, your family and the environment! Happy and Healthy Cleaning!!
