13 How to put on a face mask. Masks are effective only if worn properly. To maximize your protection, be sure to follow these simple steps. PRIOR TO PATIENT TREATMENT 1. Cover nose and mouth completely with mask. 2. Ensure mask conforms to the face at the sides of the mouth. 3. Mold nosepiece to promote a close fit. 4. Use protective eyewear with side shields when exposure to fluids is possible. 5. DO NOT wear below the nose. 6. DO NOT let hang or dangle around neck. Removing a face mask 1. Change your mask between patients and if it becomes wet during a patient treatment. 2. Only handle earloops or ties. 3. Promptly discard soiled mask. 4. Wash hands. 5. Glossary of mask terms Particle filtration efficiency (PFE) Measures the percent efficiency at which the mask filters sub micron particulate from passing through the mask. Fluid resistance The ability of a mask s material construction to minimize fluids such as blood, body fluids and aerosols from traveling through the material and potentially coming into contact with the user. The only test standard for fluid resistance is the ASTM F All masks designated fluid resistant meet or exceed ASTM F 1862 for fluid resistance at 80, 120 or 160. The higher the number, the better the fluid resistance. Breathability/Differential pressure (DP) Conveys how easily air passes through a mask, which is an indication of how easily you can breathe while wearing it. 15 What s inside metal tips may shock you! These tips, pictured below, come from a practice in Charlotte, NC. We took them to a dental lab, and cut them in half. As you can see, the brass of the outer tubes has become discolored and is beginning to corrode. The inner tube is also corroding, and in a newer tip sample, there was corrosion at the openings.
