2 STATEMENT For the last years Rachele Maistrello s practice has mainly been focused around different aspect of the deconstruction of clichés, trough an attitude based on a private relationships, in which the photographic medium is used as a social instrument of estrangement. In her research, the sumptuousness of kitsch, the contradiction of the tautological and the iconology of the peripheral are the upshot of an ongoing attempt to come closer to people and their own private heroism. From her rich repertory of visual sketches she realizes pictures fluctuating between the true, the possible and the fictitious. To understand their nature, we are obliged to study, with a semiotic eye, the cuts of the framing, the origin of the light source and the possible presence of reflexes. Her main artistic topics are the everyday heroism of ordinary people and the social potential of the performative side of photography.

In the last years she exhibited in group and solo shows in Italy and abroad, such as BYOB (Venice Biennale 2011), UNSEEN (Amsterdam), ZKM (Karlsruhe), IMMIX gallery (Paris), Ca Rezzonico (Venice), OG9 (Zurich), Museo MSUM (Lubiana). In 2012 she was selected for the public art project ARTAROUND commissioned by Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea (Cinisello Balsamo). In 2013 she was one of the assignee of the ateliers at Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, Venice, and in 2014 she obtained the international award HANDLE WITH CARE, for which she realized the work THE HISTORY WITHIN for the city of Lubiana. In 2015 she was assigned the Combat Prize, photography section, and obtained the special mention at Fabbri Award for Contemporary Art. In 2017 she has been selected by Nctm Studio for an artist residence at I: Project Space in Beijing.
