TEAM CD2 MAR-JUNE 2014 TRANS FINAL 22/11/13 12:45 Page 2 TEAM MARCH / APRIL 2014 TRACK 1: TEAM NEWS Nikki: David Beckham has more than thirty of them. Dave: Harry Styles from One Direction has more than forty! Nikki: Rita Ora and Tom Daley love them. Dave: But Nicki Minaj wishes she d never had hers done. Nikki: What are we talking about? Dave: Tattoos! Twenty per cent of British adults have a tattoo. Nikki: That's a lot! Dave: But 30 per cent of people who have tattoos wish they hadn't had them done. Nikki: Oh dear! We ve got three people in the studio to talk about tattoos. Dave: First, Jodie. Hi, Jodie. Jodie: Hi, Dave. Hi, Nikki. Dave: Jodie, you re 20 and you re a big fan of tattoos. Jodie: Yes, I ve got a tattoo on my right arm. I love it. Dave: When did you get your tattoo done? Jodie: Well, you have to be 18 to have a tattoo in the UK. My parents wanted me to wait a bit to be sure. So I got it for my 19th birthday. It s a flower with a bee and a butterfly. Dave: How long did it take? Jodie: Five hours! I went in for two sessions, a week apart. Dave: Have you ever regretted it? Jodie: No, I want more! 2
TEAM CD2 MAR-JUNE 2014 TRANS FINAL 22/11/13 12:45 Page 3 Dave: Next we have Nick with us. Nick: Hi, Dave. Dave: Nick, you re planning to have a tattoo done for the first time tomorrow Nick: Yes, and I m feeling nervous. Dave: Jodie, talk to Nick. Tell him how it feels. Jodie: Hi, Nick. To be honest, it hurts. When the needle go in, it s like a hot scratch. Nick: Oooh! I don t like the sound of that. Jodie: How old are you, Nick? Nick: I m 18 this week. I ve waited all year to get it done. Dave: Eighteen? What do your parents think? Nick: My mum hates tattoos, so I m not telling her. Dave: Is that a good idea? What will she say when she sees it? Nick: She ll freak out! Nikki: Oh no, Nick! What design do you want? Nick: I was going to have a lion. But I m not sure now. Nikki: Why don t you try a temporary tattoo? If you like it, you could get it done when you re older. If you don t like it, you can wash it off. Nick: OK, yeah, maybe I ll do that. Dave: Thanks, Nick and Jodie. Now, here s Lisa. Lisa, you had a bad tattoo experience. Lisa: Yes, this was last year. I m such a big sports fan and I loved the London Olympics. So I had Olympics 2012 tattooed on my foot. Dave: What went wrong? Lisa: The tattoo artist spelt Olympics wrong! Instead of O-L-Y-M-P-I-C-S, he inked O-Y-L-M-P-I-C-S! 3
TEAM CD2 MAR-JUNE 2014 TRANS FINAL 22/11/13 12:45 Page 4 Dave: That s awful! Can you have it removed? Lisa: Well, that s the problem. It s difficult to remove tattoos, especially colour ones. And mine s got all five Olympic colours! I m gutted! Dave: Thanks for telling us your story, Lisa. Good luck. Nikki: If you want a tattoo, make sure you want it for life. Dave: And make sure the artist can spell! TRACK 2: SPECIAL REPORT Dave: Do you remember having your first driving lesson, Nikki? Nikki: Yes, I do! I was 17 and I was terrified. Dave: Half of all teens aged 17 to 20 used to have a driving licence. Now, it s only a third. Nikki: That s because it is expensive. There are lessons to pay for, the driving test, insurance, and then there s the car! Dave: And many teens today would rather spend their money on smartphones and tablets. We ve got Anna on the line. Hi, Anna. Anna: Hi, Dave. Dave: Anna, you re 17, why are you learning to drive? Anna: I live in the country. There isn t always public transport like buses or trains, so being able to drive is really important for me. At the moment, my parents have to drive me everywhere. When I can drive, I ll be able to visit my friends, go to the cinema, get a job. I can t wait! Dave: It s very expensive to learn to drive. Anna: I know! I ve been saving money since I was 15. I am lucky, though - my dad owns a garage, so he s got me a cheap car, and he s getting me a good deal on his insurance. Dave: People say teen drivers are dangerous drivers. One in 4 drivers have a crash in the year after they take their test. 4
TEAM CD2 MAR-JUNE 2014 TRANS FINAL 22/11/13 12:45 Page 5 Anna: Yeah, but that also means 3 in 4 drivers don t have a crash. My dad s really strict with me about driving. He says I mustn t listen to loud music, I mustn t look at my phone or have more than one friend in the car. Dave: Anna, you ve been very brave and recorded your first driving lesson for us. Let s have a listen in to Anna s First Driving Lesson. *** Instructor: OK, Anna. Let s get you driving. Anna: OK. Instructor: How are you feeling? Anna: Nervous! I hope I don t make too many mistakes! Instructor: You ll be fine. Just do your best. First, is your seat position right? Anna: No, it s too far back. Instructor: Can you touch the pedals? Anna: Yes. Instructor: Can you see in your mirrors? Anna: Yes, I can. Instructor: And don t forget to check that the doors are shut. Anna: Yeah. Instructor: What s next? Anna: Put the key in the ignition and start the engine. Instructor: There re just two more things first. Anna: Put my seat belt on! Instructor: Correct. Now what? Anna: Check the car s in neutral. 5
TEAM CD2 MAR-JUNE 2014 TRANS FINAL 22/11/13 12:45 Page 6 Instructor: That s it. And you can tell if the car s in neutral by moving the gear stick. If it moves freely from side to side, it s in neutral. Instructor: Now turn the engine on! Instructor: Good. Look in your mirrors. Press down the clutch and go into first gear. Push down the indicator to show that you re moving off. Anna: Oh, there s so much to remember. Instructor: You re doing great! How do you move the car forwards? Anna: I need to release the handbrake? Instructor: Yes, put down the handbrake. Good. Press your foot on the accelerator gently and at the same time, release the clutch. Anna: So much to remember! Instructor: Congratulations! You re driving! Easy, isn t it? Now, slow down slow down STOP! TRACK 3: MUSIC Nikki: Today we re talking about a new band. They re not very well-known yet. Dave: But they ve got a fast-growing number of fans. Their first song is called Strong and it did really well in the UK and Australian charts. Nikki: The band is called London Grammar. Dave: They sound like an English lesson! Nikki: I know! Let s talk to our TEAM music reporter, Niall. Hi, Niall. Niall: Hi, Nikki. Hi, everyone. Nikki: You ve been to see London Grammar live. What did you think? Niall: I absolutely loved them. Nikki: The singer Hannah Reid has a beautiful voice. How did her voice sound live? 6
TEAM CD2 MAR-JUNE 2014 TRANS FINAL 22/11/13 12:45 Page 7 Niall: It was spine-tingling. Nikki: Who s in the band? Niall: There are three of them - there s Hannah, of course - she s the singer and writes a lot of the songs. Then there s Dan Rothman, the guitarist. And multi-talented Dot Major, who plays lots of instruments, like keyboards and drums. Nikki: How did they meet? Niall: Hannah and Dan met at university. Dan saw a picture of Hannah playing guitar on Facebook. He messaged her and asked her if she wanted to play some music together. Then Dot joined. Nikki: Did they play many gigs in their early days? Niall: They played in some low-key bars. They really wanted people to hear their music live. So they didn t put anything on YouTube until Nikki: They re very good-looking, aren t they? So they didn t want people to just talk about their appearance. Niall: I think they were a bit self-conscious, that s all. People have compared Hannah s voice to Florence from Florence + the Machine. And their music style to The xx. Nikki: So their first album is called If You Wait. Can you describe it? Niall: I d call it chilled-out. Yeah, and my favourite song on that album is Strong. I listen to it every day! Nikki: You can read more about London Grammar in this month s TEAM. Listen to one of their songs and see if you agree with Niall. TRACK 4: TEAM TOP FIVE Nikki: Let s see if you can guess who I m talking about, Dave. It s 450 years since this man was born. Dave: OK so that s sixteen-seventy- no sixty-four. Sixteen sixty-four. Nikki: He wrote 37 plays Dave: Hm 7
TEAM CD2 MAR-JUNE 2014 TRANS FINAL 22/11/13 12:45 Page 8 Nikki: and he was born in Stratford-upon-Avon. Dave: Easy. It s Shakespeare! Nikki: You re right. This April, it will be 450 years since the birth of William Shakespeare. Dave: This month s TEAM Top Five is our Top Five Facts about Shakespeare. *** Dave: Number five. Teen 1: He had his left ear pierced and he wore an earring. Nikki: Number four. Teen 2: He was an actor as well as a writer. He acted in lots of his own plays. Dave: Number three. Teen 3: He invented more than 1,700 words and phrases in the English language that we still use today. Dave: For example? Teen 3: You ve got a heart of gold and love is blind. Nikki: Number two. Teen 1: He had three children, including twins. One of the twins - Hamnet - died when he was only eleven years old. Dave: And number one. Teen 2: He died on his birthday the 23rd of April! 8
TEAM CD2 MAR-JUNE 2014 TRANS FINAL 22/11/13 12:45 Page 9 TEAM MAY / JUNE 2014 TRACK 5: SPORT Dave: Everyone s getting excited in the TEAM studio. Nikki: Yes, we can t wait for the big summer of football. Dave: It s the World Cup Nikki: and it will be in Brazil, the world s most football-crazy country! Dave: We ve got TEAM sports reporter Ruby in the studio with us. She s going to tell us a bit more about football in Brazil! Hi, Ruby. Ruby: Hi, Dave. Dave: What s so special about a World Cup in Brazil? Ruby: First, the Brazilian fans! Football means everything to the fans - they re so passionate. Everyone in Brazil plays football too it s how they express themselves. Dave: That s because they can play on the beach in the hot sun and not in the cold and rain! Ruby: True! Dave: What about the team strip they wear yellow, blue and green, don t they? Ruby: Yes, that s right. But did you know Brazil used to play in white, with a bit of blue? Dave: No? Ruby: They changed the colours of the kit after they lost a match in the 1950 World Cup! Dave: Wow that s a bit extreme! Ruby: Yes, they also changed it because Brazilians wanted a team kit that had more of the colours of the Brazilian flag! Dave: Yes, of course: yellow, green and blue. 9
TEAM CD2 MAR-JUNE 2014 TRANS FINAL 22/11/13 12:45 Page 10 Ruby: That s also why the team have the nickname Canarinho. That means little canaries. A yellow and green bird! Dave: Oh, I see. What players should TEAM listeners look out for in this Brazil team? Ruby: Well they re all good! There s Dani Alves, David Luiz, Dante, Oscar, Bernard, Fred, Hulk. Dave: I love those names! Ruby: And don t forget Neymar. He s going to be one of the stars of this tournament, I m sure! Dave: And of course, Brazil has an amazing history of past players too. Ruby: Pele, the world s most famous player in the world is Brazilian! And everyone remembers Ronaldo and Ronaldinho. Dave: Back to Who do you think is going to win? Ruby: That s simple! Brazil! They ve won it five times and they re at home. What can go wrong? TRACK 6: SPECIAL REPORT Nikki: It s summer time which means it s time to travel and experience new things. Lots of us go away for our holidays, and, most of us love it. But for some people, going away can be very stressful. They are homesick. Dave: It s normal to feel homesick. Seventy per cent of university students, for example, feel homesick during their first term away from home. Nikki: Yes, for example, Spanish footballer Jesus Navas used to feel so anxious when he was away from home that he couldn t play football. Then he had counselling and now he s living in England and playing for Manchester City! Dave: So, it is possible to recover. So, we want to know have YOU ever been homesick? Call the TEAM studio now! Nikki: First, we ve got Jess on the line. Hi, Jess, tell us your story. 10
TEAM CD2 MAR-JUNE 2014 TRANS FINAL 22/11/13 12:45 Page 11 Jess: Well I used to go boarding school a type of school where you live during term-time. I used to get really homesick. Nikki: What did you miss? Jess: I missed my family, my dog, my mum s cooking and my bed! Nikki: Did you use to have good days as well as bad? Jess: Yes, it got better when I made friends, but every week I used to get a letter or a phone call from home and that made me cry! Nikki: And now? Jess: I m at university now. I live in halls, but that s a lot easier, I have a mobile phone, Internet, Skype, and I can come home when I want to! Nikki: Thanks, Jess. Next, we ve got Jack on the phone. Hi, Jack, have you ever been homesick? Jack: Yes, last year I went to Munich in Germany for a week on a school exchange. I stayed with a German student, and his family. Nikki: Was it your first time away from home on your own? Jack: Yes! Nikki: And did you get homesick? Jack: For the first two days, yes. I missed my home, my family even my sister and things like, food and the TV. Everything was so different there. Nikki: Did you call home at all? Jack: Once, but I tried not to call home. Nikki: That s a good idea. If I heard my mum s voice when I was away at your age, I used to feel like crying. Jack: The host family were so friendly and kind. They asked me what food I d like to eat and they said I could call my parents. Also I got on really well with Karl, my exchange student, and it was really fun to go to a German school and meet new people. 11
TEAM CD2 MAR-JUNE 2014 TRANS FINAL 22/11/13 12:45 Page 12 Dave: Thanks Jack. Here s a text from Dean, who s 15. I can t understand homesickness, he says. I love having new experiences. As soon as I m old enough, I m going to travel the world. Nikki: And finally, a text from Lucy. I went to Turkey on holiday this year. It was fabulous, but I missed something really silly an English cup of tea! The first thing I did when I came back home was to have a cup of tea! Dave: She should take some English teabags with her! If you re going away on holiday, have a lovely time and don t think about home! TRACK 7: 5 TEENS 5 LIVES Nikki: In TEAM this year, there are interviews with five teenagers about their lives. In this month s TEAM, we interview Olivia. Olivia lives in Glasgow in Scotland. It s an important time for Scotland. In July it s the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow a big athletics event and then, there s a referendum and important question to see if Scotland wants to be part of the UK or not. Sarah: Hi, Olivia. Olivia: Hi, Sarah. Sarah: Olivia, are you Scottish? Olivia: I m half-scottish, half-english. My mother is Scottish but my Dad is from near Liverpool. Sarah: And is it true that you lived in England when you were younger? Olivia: Yes, I lived in Maidenhead, which is near London, but I don t remember it much. We moved when I was just three years old. I ve lived in Glasgow in Scotland for twelve years now, so I feel more Scottish than English. Sarah: How is life different in Scotland from that in England, do you think? Olivia: I sometimes go down to England to visit my grandparents. I think the main differences are: it s not as rainy down near Liverpool and I think the people up in Glasgow are much friendlier and more up for a chat. Sarah: That s great. What about the food? Are there any differences in food? 12
TEAM CD2 MAR-JUNE 2014 TRANS FINAL 22/11/13 12:45 Page 13 Olivia: We have a slightly different cuisine up here, if you like um of course, our traditional dish is haggis, neeps and tatties, which is basically a meat dish with potatoes and turnips. Sarah: That sounds lovely. It also sounds quite heavy. Is the food heavier up north over the border, do you think? Olivia: Well, we re definitely famous for deep-frying a lot of things, so I would say so, yes. Sarah: So what kind of things do you fry? Olivia: Um fish chips and even Mars Bars, a type of chocolate bar up here. Sarah: Have you ever tried a deep-fried Mars Bar, Olivia? Olivia: I haven t, no and I don t intend to! Sarah: OK So, this summer, Glasgow is going to host the big sporting event, the Commonwealth Games. Um How is your city changing? Olivia: Well, we ve had a couple of big stadiums being built for different activities and leisure centres have become more popular I think because young people have been inspired to take part, I think. Sarah: That s great. And of course then the big story is that there s going to be an important vote in Scotland later this year um and that Scottish people will decide if they want to be independent from the rest of the UK. Um How do you think that vote will go? Olivia: Um I think that Scotland will choose not to become independent because most people think that we wouldn t be able to live comfortably independently without the support of England. Also, I think people generally quite like being part of Britain. Sarah: That s great and so would you be happy with that result yourself? Olivia: Definitely. Sarah: OK, Olivia, thank you so much for joining us on the show. Olivia: No problem, thanks for having me. 13
TEAM CD2 MAR-JUNE 2014 TRANS FINAL 22/11/13 12:45 Page 14 TRACK 8: TEAM Top Five TEAM Top Five Nikki: Last December I had a really unlucky day. Dave: What happened? Nikki: First I missed my train home by one minute. Then I dropped my phone and it broke. When I finally got home, I couldn t find my keys. I waited for two hours for my flatmate to come home! It was freezing! Dave: What a terrible day! Nikki: Guess what the date was. Dave: Friday the thirteenth? Nikki: Correct. And there s another Friday the Thirteenth in June. Dave: Oh dear. That ll be the unluckiest day of the summer. Nikki: And did you know that 85% of British people are superstitious? That means they believe that certain things can bring them good or bad luck. Dave: Like Friday the Thirteenth! So what other things do British people think bring bad luck? It s the TEAM Top Five. Dave: Number five. Teen 1: Walking under a ladder is bad news! Nikki: Number four. Teen 2: Putting a pair of new shoes on the table. Don t do it! Dave: Number three. Teen 3: If you see a single magpie, you re in for a bad day. Dave: What s a magpie? 14
TEAM CD2 MAR-JUNE 2014 TRANS FINAL 22/11/13 12:45 Page 15 Teen 3: It s a large black and white bird. Nikki: Number two. Teen 1: Here s a typically British one. Don t open your umbrella indoors! Dave: And Number one. Teen 2: The WORST thing you could do is break a mirror - it brings you seven years of bad luck! Dave: Oh no! Nikki: Thank you for listening to our show! 15
