Willie Radkay (he shared a cell next to Machine Gun Kelly), said that having your own cell was a great better than in other federal prisons. By having your own cell, it was less risk of being sexually violated and the privacy was also a much liked thing. He also said that the staff (most of the time) treated the prisoners respectfully but they almost never spoke to one another. The food was the best within the entire prison system and he said his time at Alcatraz to be better than at any other prison. 5

In the earlier years of Alcatraz, prisoners were not allowed to talk to one another except during meals and recreation (utevistelse) periods.
