2 Henni ALFTAN / One man show From March 26th to 29th, the Claire Gastaud gallery will exhibit a solo show of the Finnish Henni ALFTAN at Art Paris Art Fair. The singularity of the paint of Henni Alftan holds in the apparent simplicity that it emerges and the averted vision of reality that it gives to see. Henni Alftan defines herself her way to paint like "gestual but mannered, where the mannered aims less to represent the object than to manifest the artifice of Art, to put the Art in representation". Henni Alftan is born in 1979, she lives in Paris and in Helsinki. Several finnish museums have already acquired her pieces, especially the Art Museum of Helsinki, Amos Anderson Art Museum, Helsinki Kuntsi Museum of Modern Art, Vaasan and the Hämeenlinna Museum of Art. In France, her work has been noticed during her first personal exhibition in Claire Gastaud gallery and her participation in the exhibition "Travelers" who bringing together 12 artists nominated for the Emerige foundation (curator Gaël Charbau). In 2015, she will move to New York, selected by the Alfred Koderlin foundation to join the International Studio & Curatorial Project of New York. 5 Texts/ «At First glance, we sense a sort of immediacy in Henni Alftan s works. By using a complex combination of framing and ellipsis, of matter and light, the artist manages to product images that appear so real, they become evident at least at first glance. But then, our reading of the painting is often completely perturbed by the shifts she introduced to complete the subject and inform on their original context. Henni Alfatn systematically plays with our vision, our sense of perception and our thinking The relationship between, naming, showing and contextualizing produces the intriguing tension that underlies her works. They sometimes border on cold abstraction, until her artful brushstroke, her knowledge of the code ruling the image finally reverse our first impressions and lead us to a familiar, recognizable place Though her subjets are entirely contemporary, each one of her canvasses refers to pictorial issues of the history of painting. As a result of her experimentations, Henni Alftan has compiled an impressive poetic lexicon of the mundane. Our reflexes as unremitting voyeurs of images are triggered by the touch of her brushstrokes. Gaël Charbau, Aurélie Faure Voyageurs», Fondation Emerige, 2014 «I m interested on the relation that a picture has with the media, material or technique that realizes it, that makes it visible. For a picture to be visible, it necessarily engaged in a specific form, a specific medium. My main medium is painting. Painting can be very illustrative on how a picture appears, for it is in our nature to see images in a simple stain or a few hasty strokes. Our gaze seeks constantly to interpret, to give meaning to what it perceives. I have always aspired for a practice of painting that is more analytical that improvised. I m interested in finding the moment when begins or when ends the resemblance. In order to understand the mechanism of the recognizable, sometimes my paintings are very near the abstract. I do this in order to see that moment when the paint start to refer, to resemble to something other than to itself. My paintings are constructions in witch the different ways of applying the paint on the canvas is predetermined by the sketch, the plan. In my works, the image rendered by the paint, and the paint itself, are in a tight mimetic relationship. The subject of my paintings is as much the painting itself, meaning its physical qualities, it s history, it s objecthood etc., than the picture rendered by it. I wish to create work that is without pathos, but not without poetry. This is why my painting is often gestural, but not expressive. This brushstroke is not improvised, but planned and premeditated. I call it manneristic, for mannerism seeks less to represent an object than to reveal the artifice of art itself, to represent art. I consider the object that is a painted picture (tableau), almost as an archetype of the art object, in a vulgar sense. What I mean is, that if for example in a comic, if you find a depiction of a work of art, this is most likely to be a painting, an oil on canvas, of a medium size. And it is probably because of that very privileged place that painting has occupied within the arts for so long, that it is today a very heavy and difficult medium to tackle. But it is heavy with meaning. It is because this picture plane and this object is now so over-signifying and over-determined that it is of great interest to me. I don t paint after photographs. My paintings derive from observation and deduction; of life, of the world and of it s representations in pictures, painted and otherwise. My images are not new. Most of the time you ve seen these pictures through and through, in movies, television, painting, photos etc. All around us. But I did not find them anywhere in particular, except in my head, my memory. But I did not invent them. It is as if they were already there.» Henni ALFTAN, 2015

9 Galerie Claire Gastaud Claire Gastaud gallery was founded in Since 1996, she is leaded by Claire Gastaud herself, assisted by Caroline Perrin, historian of Art. The gallery stands out by his geographic location in the center of France, in Auvergne, and by his incredible exhibition places. Indeed, it is composed by 4 larges exhibitions rooms added to an underground space of 200m². The gallery also has office in 19, rue des Filles du Calvaire in Paris 03. Claire Gastaud gallery has built notoriety in staying faithful to his design: to present a selection of personalities of contemporary art while actively supporting young and emergent artists. Enterprising major projects (exhibitions beyond the walls, work orders, support to in situ creations), the gallery wants to assist each of its artists in time. The particularity of the Claire Gastaud gallery lie in its large consistency related to its requirement level, and paradoxically, to its eclecticism. Rather than specialize in a specific wave, Claire Gastaud wanted that the gallery stays in resonance with the current world and interested in all the creations (old or new), in all the subjects and in all the modes of expression (paintings, photographs, movies, sculptures and installations). Among of the most emblematic exhibitions, we can list, in the nineties : Dennis Oppenheim, Jacques de la Villeglé, Riopelle, Chu Teh Chun, Claude Viallat, Robert Combas, Rémi Blanchard, Philippe Favier, Erro.
