2 Purpose The Purpose of this lab is to learn how to collect a sample of blood properly. From this blood sample disease such as anemia, viral infections, iron deficiency, spherocytosis, parasitic infection, and many other health related disease that could be detected by testing a blood sample.

3 Materials 2 lavender and Red barrel to tubes

4 21 gauge needle Tourniquet

5 70% alcohol gauze swab

6 Gloves Band-aid

7 Safety glasses Working mat (paper towel)

8 Lab coat (It must be button all the Disinfecting wipes way up)

9 Biohazard containers

10 Step One Wash hands/apply gloves. Using the proper hand washing techniques

11 Avoid touching the sink. Turn water on using a paper towel

13 Then wet your hands and wrists.

15 Place a small amount of soap onto your hands

17 Work soap into a lather. Vigorously rub together all surfaces of the lathered hands for 15 seconds. Friction helps remove dirt and microorganisms. Wash around and under rings, around cuticles, and under fingernails

19 Rinse hands thoroughly under a stream of water. Running water carries away dirt and debris. Point fingers down so water and contamination won't drip toward elbows

21 Dry hands completely with a clean dry paper towel.

23 Turn Facet Off Using A Paper Towel

25 Apply Gloves

27 Step Two Approach patient/ identify yourself.

29 Step Three Identify patient/ask about fasting (basal state)

31 If patient says not to fasting, record on chart.

33 Step Four Assemble all equipment/ tap tube with additives. Carefully hold the 21 gauge needle in you hands, and take off the clear cap.

35 Step Four Place the barrel onto the needle

37 Step Four Place 1 Red Top Tube into the barrel. DO NOT PUSH TUBE INTO NEEDLE!!!

39 Step Four Place all materials on working mat

41 Step Four *Place Dummy arm onto Patients Arm*

43 Step Five Position patient and self.

45 Step Five Ask patient to make fist Open fist place bulb in between palm

47 Step Five Tell patient to make fist around bulb

49 Step Six *Apply tourniquet* Put tourniquet around arm and stretch

51 Step Six Cross the two ends of the tourniquet

53 Step Six Tuck one end of the tourniquet under the other

55 Step Seven Palpate for vein/ Notice direction of the vein.

57 Step Seven Cleanse site with 70% alcohol cotton.

59 Step Seven Dry site with sterile cotton.

61 Step Seven let air dry

63 Step Eight Fix vein and enter with bevel of needle up. (Do this while you are waiting for arm to dry.) Hold the barrel in your dominate hand. Using the opposite hand pull back the safety cap

65 Step Eight Place to fingers over the cap of the needle

67 Step Eight Pull the cap away from you

69 Step Eight Place two fingers below the barrel, and thumb on top. Place two fingers around the end of the barrel, with the thumb at the end of the tube

71 Step Eight Insert the needle into the vein. Hold vacutanier at a 30 degree angle

73 Step Nine Push tube on, using first two fingers and thumb.

75 Step Nine Let Tube fill Go Back to step 4, But uses a Lavender Top Tube

77 Step Ten Remove tourniquet With one hand, pull the end that was tucked under

79 Step Ten Ask patient to open hand.

81 Step Eleven Remove tube from needle Grab test tube with dominate hand. But still hold the barrel steady.

83 Step Eleven Remove very slow

85 Step Eleven Remove needle from arm. Place Sterile Gauze Over Needle *DO NOT APPLY PRESSURE WITH GAUZE*

87 Step Twelve Apply pressure with sterile Gauze (ask patient to help).

89 Step Thirteen Dispose of needle in biohazard sharps container

91 Step Fourteen Recheck requisitions or arm band/ Label all tubes.

93 Step Fifteen Bandage patient after noting that bleeding has stopped

95 Step Sixteen Dispose of all items Dispose in Trash Can

97 Step Sixteen Dispose in Biohazard containers

99 Step Seventeen Clean the whole area with wipe ( Make sure it is opened all the way)

101 Step Eighteen Remove gloves/ wash hands.

105 Continued Palpate for vein/ Notice direction of the vein. Cleanse site with 70% alcohol cotton. Dry site with sterile cotton or let air dry. Fix vein and enter with bevel of needle up. Push tube on, using first two fingers and thumb. Let fill/ Remove tourniquet/ Ask patient to open hand. Remove tube from needle/ Get sterile dry cotton. Remove needle from arm. Apply pressure with sterile cotton (ask patient to help). Dispose of needle in biohazard sharps container.
