2 READING 60 MINS 25 MARKS Servicio de Idiomas PART ONE: Read the text and answer the questions by choosing A, B, C or D. There are ten questions each worth 1 mark (Total of 10 Marks). Problems in the High Street Dear Sir, I am the person who rents the space in your building at 16 High Street, above the shoe shop, and I am writing to you because I am worried by what I hear is going to happen in the next few months. I run a hairdresser s business in the space I rent, and I have been there for over 20 years, which means it is very well known and quite successful. My customers normally walk through the shoe shop to the stairs at the back which lead to the hairdresser s, and this has never been a problem. I get on very well with the owner of the shoe shop downstairs, and he told me a few days ago that he was retiring and leaving his premises. He also mentioned that a fast food chain was going to take his space and sell burgers and chips. I would have liked to rent that space myself but I can t afford it. The problem I am going to face is that my customers come to the hairdresser s to relax and the noise and smells of a burger bar will surely drive them away. Also, they won t like having to walk through a hot, smelly burger bar to reach the stairs, and this means my business will suffer. As you know, I have always paid my rent on time, and you have told me many times in the past that you are happy with me as your tenant, and that you wish me to continue with my business for as long as possible. I believe you own another empty shop on the High Street, and was hoping the burger bar could go there, where it would not affect my business. I am really concerned about this problem and hope you will be able to find a solution that is good for all concerned. I look forward to hearing some good news soon.
