4 MASTER COURSES IED ROMA MASTER COURSES IED Master courses allow students to be involved in conceptual and project simulations. Study plans have a flexible structure in terms of contents and respond effectively to those wishing to stand out both in creativity and management. These courses are based on Italian design features: curiosity, initiative and improvement thanks to technical skills and creativity. Structured with real companies support, Master courses coach students to face customer marketing and to build their own professional identity. These courses offer the know-how and technical tools useful to manage the project complexity through a methodological approach. Starting from a multidisciplinary methodology, they are aimed at strengthening students autonomy in the relevant fields and moulding them into professionals capable of leading a design project and managing all its associated complexities using a creative and manufacturing approach. Career opportunities include placements within organisations, design studios or agencies. Design Fashion Communication Food Design Project Experience Interior Design* Comunicazione e Marketing per la Moda Jewelry Design Joint Master in Arts Management (IED Firenze and IED Roma) Brand Management *The course is recognised by Italian Ministry of Education and Research (MIUR) as a 1 st Level Master s Degree and awards 60 credits allowing to pursue the studies in Italy and abroad.

Project by Y. Ji Jo 6 MASTER COURSE IN JEWELRY DESIGN In keeping with the continual evolution of the world of fashion and luxury products, the Master in Jewelry Design takes an in-depth look into the various aspects of creativity within the world of jewellery, by studying its peculiarities and expressive forms, its production techniques, its communication strategies, and its positioning on the market. The course allows students to examine all of the new jewelry trends, and to experiment with exciting combinations of new materials and precious stones or processing techniques. Thanks to the course s modular structure, which integrates theoretical contents with practical activities, students are able to acquire confidence in their ideas whilst developing essential professional skills in the industry. Our Jewelry Designers will therefore be able to become skilled at designing collections of high jewelry, fashion jewelry, or precious watches. The Master aims to teach students the methodological approach to the creative process and professional procedures, as well as how to present and enhance their own jewelry creations.

Project by F. Cappucci 8 TARGET The Master is aimed at students with design and fashion-related undergraduate degrees. It is also an ideal qualification for professionals and artisans with industry experience, who feel the need to expand their knowledge on product distribution and the market alongside gaining more technical skills. The course is also open to anyone who has received a specific type of industry training, but wants to accompany this with a different design approach and learn about the specifics of Italian-made products. Undergraduates can also take the course, as long as they expect to receive their graduate degree before they have to defend their Master thesis. To be able to take the course, it is necessary to have a basic understanding of the main types of software for 3D design and the main techniques used for graphic representation, as well as being able to present a portfolio of work. PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES The Master trains students to become mature and competent professionals, who may go on to work as designers for industry brands, to work as freelancers for other companies, or to create their own line of products. More specific specialisations range from becoming a jewelry illustrator to becoming a 3D jewelry designer. Gaining knowledge on the different stages of jewelry creation also offers students the opportunity to work in product development, an important stage of a business s processes. CAREER SERVICE After meeting successfully graduated students, Career Service submits CVs and portfolios to interested companies, arranges the selection interviews - aimed at activating internships or training periods, collaborations, field projects - and ensure constant support monitoring activities. During the study pathway, IED trains students and provides them with the techniques and tools required to write their CV, to take a selection interview, realise their personal portfolio. The internship or training period is conceived as an on-site learning and training period at one of the companies collaborating with IED. This experience allows students to apply the acquired tools and knowledge to a real professional project. Some of the agencies and companies that activated internships in past editions of the Master course: 1955, Accentra, Agorà Activities srl, Aleteia, Altaroma, Angeletti e Ruzza, Annamode, Archiplan, Atelier Appennini, Baullariquattro, BIC Lazio, BM & partner, Bulsara ADV, Canali, Cisalfa, Compagnia Leone Cinematografica, Comunicazione 2000, P&Co., Dagon media, DOL, Easy Dinner, Factory 4, Federculture, Fitzcarraldo, Fondazione Giuliani, Fondazione Mondo Digitale, From studio, Galleria MIA, Gambero Rosso TV, Gattinoni, Identity Communication, IKEA, Ikonos, Infocert, Kirweb, KT Kinetics Technology, Latella Advisory, Latte Creative, Lux made in, Medtag, Mosquito, Mousse magazine, Multimedia service, Ness Comunicazione, Palazzo Strozzi, Pavart, Photissima, PPAN, Riccardi bronzista, Reason that, Rinascente, Simona Barbieri, Stanhome, Studio Pasquali Associati, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Teatro Olimpico, Teatro Parioli, The First Luxury Art Hotel, Todini gioielli, Touring servizi, Triennale di Milano, Twin set Ufashion, Vitamin Marketing

10 METHODOLOGY AND STRUCTURE PROGRAMME Approach is experiential: the classes will provide the fundamental skills to attend specific workshops and labs and manage effective projects, both case studies and real companies briefs. BASIC ACTIVITIES CORE ACTIVITIES IED ROMA Master Diploma IED - JEWELRY DESIGN Fashion The professionally oriented approach of the course allows students to enhance their individual inclinations and abilities through practical experience. The theoretical part of the course, which is necessary to ensure that all students have the same basic knowledge, is then followed by a longer period where theory and practice are constantly combined to allow the development of practical projects, which may also be critically reviewed. The skills and experience of the tutors, who are all professionals, working within the industry and are recognised throughout the world, ensure an educational experience where students can delve deep into the different disciplines and working methods used in jewelry making. The course uses an educational methodology built around comparing and sharing designs. This method allows students to acquire the professional tools necessary for igniting their originality and innovation when creating new jewelry collections. History of Jewelry Design The history of jewelry is taken on by examining the historical contexts and the capabilities in terms of conceptualisation and feasibility of each era. The course is structured with detailed studies of and interesting facts about individual events, with the aim of providing a comprehensive historical summary that includes the current trends within the world of jewelry. Design Methodology Devoted to providing knowledge about the jewelry-making industry, which encompasses years of history, styles, and techniques, this module focuses on the contemporary significance of jewelry by analysing trends and market demand. Workshop sessions, where students will be creating a piece of handmade jewelry, will be an opportunity to learn about the various ways of shaping materials into a new creation. Visual and Project Communication One of the most important forms of communication and sharing information. Students will be introduced to the basic practices of graphic design: composition, branding, typography, and organising information. Workshop 1: Watch Design This workshop aims to provide students with an in-depth insight into the technical and mechanical features of watch parts, which begins by looking at their movement. The course then looks into the different types of watches and their designs, both from an aesthetic and functional point of view, according to each specific product. The structure of the programme allows students to achieve a high level of design expertise Advanced 3D Jewelry Course After taking an initial look into the manual representation of jewelry through sketching, and graphic rendering using Gouache and watercolour on various surface materials, we shall then go on to learn about how to use digital programmes for rendering. This will allow students to use parametric programmes and plug-ins that are essential for developing a professional and detailed design for a piece of jewelry, including the technical details necessary for producing high quality products.

Project by N. Ko 12 Communication & Branding After carrying out an initial analysis of the market, we shall then examine the marketing approaches used by jewelry brands; marketing mix variables (price, product, place, and promotion) and the differences between historic brands and start-ups; creating marketing plans and defining a brand s vision and mission. Gemmology The course provides a complete knowledge properly for using stones in jewelry: it examines the qualitative aspects and the natural and aesthetic characteristics of both precious and semi-precious materials or hard stones. We shall take an in-depth look into their large variety of colours, their clarity, or the various types of cut, without neglecting to examine all aspects relating to cost, availability, and commercial uses. Workshop 2: High Jewelry - Designing with Gems Throughout the course, all of the specifics about designing within the most valuable sphere of jewelry making will be put into practice. A crucial aspect of this will be the use of precious stones together with new technologies. Workshop 3: Industrial Design Jewelry & Series Production The course is structured so that students can design in a variety of contexts, by identifying the various creative possibilities offered by the transformations and developments undergone by a finished piece of jewelry, and by using all of the most advanced digital techniques for 3D designing and modelling for prototypes, masters, and moulds, as well as the research necessary for manufacturing the product on an industrial scale. Packaging & Windows A complete view into how to display and sell your products: from analysing them, identifying their target market, designing their packaging, to designing displays and shop windows. Visits and Exhibitions Throughout the year, we shall be visiting the Fiera Vicenza Oro exhibition and some of Rome s most important museums to see their collections of historic pieces of jewelry. FINAL PROJECT The final project expands upon what has been learnt within the various disciplines, thereby allowing students to create an in-depth final piece of work. The topic of these projects is established on a yearly basis and is often carried out in collaboration with companies within the goldsmith industry, through the development of dedicated projects. It is an individual project that acts as a synthesis of the course, and is a key step for progressing on to work within the world of jewelry. Students may also devise a personal research project, and present it together with the project they worked on with a company.
