2 Rebecca Douglass took photos from the meeting; they will appear on her website for our club - Album 4 This Newsletter Has been prepared by Rebecca Douglass Since we no longer have a regular newsletter editor, members of the NSBDC agreed to take turns producing a newsletter. At each meeting we ask for a volunteer to produce the next issue, and I offered to do it this time. Remember, this is not a huge job: each volunteer is free to do the newsletter as she pleases; there is no set form. Even if all you want to do is a one-page meeting report and notice of the next meeting, this is fine the important thing is that the Bulletin is produced after each meeting and sent to all members. Thanks to Rebecca Douglass for hosting, at her home, May 20, 2006 meeting to celebrate Boys Dolls. One might think that a meeting of four Barbie enthusiasts is no meeting at all; but if you count all the Dolls & Friends in who were present, it was very well attended. We enjoyed food brought by Sandi and Minnie thank you and tea and setting our dolls to poses for Rebecca's camera. We met at 1 PM on Saturday, May 20, 2006 Rebecca Douglass, Minnie Mollins, Sandi Little, and Eileen Graham. Guest Linda Verge. Minnie attended the Bangor Show she was able to purchase Vintage Ken and Alan for $20.00 US each. Minnie mentioned the Moncton Miniature and Doll Show was on today. May 20, The weather was beautiful and sunny and Minnie was able to attend from New Brunswick. We will cancel the Oct Meeting as Rebecca is going to Europe for a few months, so will be plan a Dec 2, 2006 meeting. Everyone should check their schedules and weather permitting we will hold the meeting then. Rebecca had received letters from the Alberta Barbie Club with invitation to attend the Convention Sept 21, 22, & Sandi is attending the Fashion Royality Convention in USA in the Fall. Rebecca will be attending 4 Doll shows in NL; 1 Sept, 2 in Oct, 1Nov. You will, of course, be able to see some of the Dolls present in the photos here. Program for this month was Male Dolls, Newsletter May MALE DOLLS Each Girl spoke about the Male dolls they had on display. Rebecca had some of here Vintage Ken, Alan, Ricky, Biff, Steven, and Black GIJoe. Sandi spoke on hers Harley Ken #2; Romance Novel Ken ( The Raider); New Kids on The Block; Jason Priestly from 90210; Alan from The Family Series. Minnie brought 80 s Kens; Blaine from Cal. Girl Series 2003; Ken from Beauty and Beast; Sailor Moon Boy; Black Flava; Power Team Blue Suit we believe from new GIJoe Series. NRFB New Kids on the Block; FLAVA on a Motorcycle; Rockers Derek and Ken; Bobby Orr by Regal 70 s; Gretzky 80 s.

5 SHOW AND TELL Eileen Showed us her # 3 Barbie she acquired from Ebay in March 2006, Billy 1954 Pullan Dolls Magic Skin; Mod Hair Barbie. Sandi Bubble cut, Mod dolls, Minnie. Superman Doll. Rebecca Showed her Vintage Ken in a Vintage Tuxedo and Ricky got a Vintage Suit Linda; Fashion Queen, Skating outfit. Skipper s in Fashions. Did You Know? 7 Ken had his birth on March 13, He is a 12" tall vinyl doll and was meant to be Barbie's escort. He was named after the Handler's son. Over the years he also got a fabulous wardrobe, friends to share it with, cars etc. whatever Barbie could buy to "keep" her man. While Barbie had many wedding ensembles and Ken did too, they never actually "tied the knot" so to speak. Markings: are found on the right side buttock, other markings used by manufacture for assembly Ken (1962) 12" tall vinyl doll with straight-legs, new painted hair in blonde or brunette, same body as earlier doll wearing solid red trunks either cotton or stretch jersey material, a red/white striped jacket with the collar stitched on was added, cork sandals with red vinyl straps, black wire stand, no towel was included. Same marks as 1961 doll. Mark: Ken /Pats.Pend./ MCMLX/ by/mattel/inc Ken (1963) 0750 Ken (1961) 1/4" shorter than previous dolls, loose legs, 12" tall vinyl doll with straight-legs, flocked hair pronounced kneecaps, fatter arms & hands. Rest ("Fuzzy headed"); blonde, brunette/black or same as prior doll. New hands that can grasp and hold items, bendable legs, blue jeans & red tank top, brown belt & white tennis shoes. Marks: 1968/Mattel, Inc./U.S. & For. Pat'd/Other Pats/Pending/Hong Kong Ken Busy talk (1972) Marks same as above Busy Ken, pretty much the same doll only talks & different outfit: wore red corduroy pants, red/blue plaid shirt, brown belt & shoes.

9 4224 Ken Mod Hair ( ) New rooted brown hair, extra beard, sideburns & 2 moustaches, bendable legs, brown/white checked jacket, white turtle neck dickey, light brown pants & brown shoes. Marks: 1968/Mattel, Inc./U.S. & For. Pat'd/Other Pats/Pending/Hong Kong 4234 Wards Mod Ken ( ) Mark same as 4224 Ken Mod Hair. Dressed doll, in pale blue brocade tux, black pants & bowtie, black shoes & red trunks Ken Sun Valley (1974) Mark: 1968/Mattel, Inc./U.S. & For. Patd./Other Pats.Pending/Taiwan 7194 Ken Fun time ( ) Mark: same as 7809 Sun Valley 9342 Ken, Now Look (Early 1976) Mark: Same as 7809 Sun Valley 9342 Ken, Now Look (Late 1976) Rooted hair is much longer, to his shoulders, no bangs and no receding forehead like the early version, paler skin tone than earlier doll & the arms have the hands facing towards the back rather than towards the thighs. Same outfit. Now made in Hong Kong. Mark: ,/ Mattel/Inc.1968/Hong Kong 7261 Ken Gold Medal Skier (1975) Mark: same as 7809 Sun Valley 7261 Ken Gold Medal Skier (1976) Same as above. Mark: 1968 Mattel, Inc./Taiwan/U.S. & Foreign Patd./Patd. in Canada Ken Free moving (1975) Ken has painted brown hair, free moving tab on back of doll makes it very movable. By rotating the tab the doll could appear to be bending, twisting or swinging an accessory. Both Ken and Curtis are wearing a one piece short suit, Ken's has solid white shorts with a red and white striped knit top, white shoes and socks, accessories are a golf club, tennis racket and ball. 10 Mattel Allan Doll Allan is 12" tall, he was first introduced in 1964, and he has the same body and markings as Ken, and shares his wardrobe. He did have two outfits made and tagged "Allan", his original swimsuit with striped jacket and Best Man shown below. Allan was Midge Hadley's boyfriend. Sometime in 1966 Allan doll was discontinued Allan Straight leg ( ) Straight legs, molded red hair, brown eyes, solid blue shorts,horizontal striped jacket (vertical striped is less common ) with white terry cloth collar that is bonded to the fabric, blue strap and cork sandals and a black wire stand Mark: 1960/by/Mattel, Inc./Hawthorne/Calif. U.S.A Allan Bend leg ( ) The same as the straight leg doll, but with bendable legs, new red jacket, lighter blue shorts, blue strap on cork sandals, and black wire stand or gold wire stand Markings are the same as #1000 Trivia: The Allan doll was named after Barbara Handler's real husband Allan Segal. Only one vinyl Mattel case pictures a graphic of both Barbie & Allan, a high valued case. (See the rare vinyl cases page for the above vinyl case). Barbara & Allan Segal had two children, Cheryl & Todd. They divorced in the 1960's and Allan the doll disappeared (1966) from the line until 1990.

11 1425 Allan's Best Man ( ) This was the only outfit specifically made for the Allan doll other than his original swimsuit attire; it featured a white dinner jacket, with half white lining, black zippered pants with soutache braid down the side, white lace & pearl button trimmed white shirt, red satin cummerbund & bowtie, black knit socks and black shoes. Boy - he almost out shined the groom! Allan vinyl case - French - Date Unknown This is the only case that I have ever seen that features only the Allan doll; wearing Saturday Nite Date. The case is made of a heavy navy blue vinyl and was featured in the Barbie Bazaar, Feb 2000 article. RICKY 1965 Ricky came onto the market in 1965, he was Skipper's boyfriend, has the same body as Skipper and Skooter, and bears the same markings as the 1964 Skipper doll. BUT - he does have his own wardrobe - and I think Skipper probably "borrowed" from him. He has six outfits, plus his original swimsuit and jacket all tagged "Ricky" Ricky Straight legs (1965) Molded red hair, blue eyes, tan skin tone, solid blue swim trunks, blue horizontal stripe jacket, collar of white terry cloth, red strap & cork sandals, "Ricky" wrist tag, liner/box, black wire stand and booklet. He has the same body mold as Skipper & Skooter and is 9 1/4" tall. Marking: 1963/Mattel, Inc Ricky Straight legs ( ) Pinker skin, rest the same as 1965.

13 Brad and Curtis By Mattel Brad ( ) is Christie's boyfriend; Curtis (1975) is Cara's boyfriend. Both are the same size as the beefier Ken doll and share his wardrobe Brad Talk (1970) Dark brown skin, black painted hair, brown eyes, bendable legs, bright colored pull on shirt, orange shorts. Mark: 1968/Mattel, Inc./U.S. & For. Pat'd/Other Pat's/Pending/Mexico 1114 Brad Talk ( ) Same as above a little darker skin. Mark: 1968/Mattel, Inc./U.S. & For. Pat'd/Other Pat's/Pending/Hong Kong I Photo N/A 1142 Brad Bend leg ( ) Same marks & doll but did not talk, head mold is a little larger, wore orange shirt & printed shorts Curtis, Free Moving (1975) Brad's head mold was used for Curtis, brown painted hair, brown eyes, dark skin tone, otherwise doll is same as 7280 Ken free moving with the free moving tab on back that allows the doll to rotate bend or twist, one piece sport short-suit, with an orange, white stripe shirt, white shorts attached, white socks & shoes a golf club, tennis racket and ball were included.
