1 Chapter 3 Growth and Development of National Institutes of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in India 3.1 Origin and Growth National Institute of Fashion Technology, a leader in fashion education with the ability to integrate knowledge, academic freedom, critical independence and creative thinking has a history of being in existence for 28 years stands as a testimony to its fundamentals where academic excellence lies at the core. The institute has stood as a beacon of serious critical engagement, a key enabler in developing competent professionals. National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), set up in 1986 under the aegis of Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, is a Statutory Institute Governed by the NIFT Act Bringing in a wide range of aesthetic & intellectual orientations, the early instructors included leading progressive scholars from Fashion Institute of Technology, New York, USA. The in-house faculty was drawn in from a distinguished group of intellectuals who put forth a sense of dynamism creating a pathway to effective learning. Pupul Jaykar Hall at NIFT headquarters in New Delhi is a reminiscence of many educational thinkers and visionaries who have been instrumental to the institute's road map to success. Academic inclusiveness has been a catalyst inthe expansion plans of the institute. Over this period, NIFT has spread its wings across the length and breadth of the country. Through its 16 professionally managed campuses, National Institute of Fashion Technology provides a framework to ensure that prospective students from different parts of the country achieve their highest potential through the programmes offered. Since the early years of its inception, the institute has provided a firm foundation in fashion education in the domains of Design, Management and Technology. Since then, NIFT has scaled high academic standards. The Campuses at Chennai, Gandhinagar, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai were set up in 1995 and that of Bengaluru in The new millennium witnessed emergence of new campuses in Bhopal, Bhubneshwar, Jodhpur, Kangra, Kannur, Patna, Raebareli and Shillong. The Campus at Srinagar in Jammu & Kashmir is the newly added node to NIFT's network. 4 3.2 Objectives The prime objective of NIFT is to assist the fashion industry in India in meeting the global challenges of industrial competitiveness. It provides professional expertise to the industry, which is necessary in the immediate context and national aim of strengthening its potential of netting foreign exchange earnings and generating employment. The specific objectives of the institute are: To establish and to carry on the administration and management of the Institute of Fashion Technology for the purpose of developing technically competent human resources through a professional programme of education, research services and training in fashion technology; To award diplomas, certificates and other distinctions at various levels to candidates to train and to prescribe standards of proficiency before the award of such diplomas, certificates and other distinctions; To Institute and award fellowships, scholarships, prizes and medals in accordance with the rules, regulations and bye laws; To confer honorary awards and other distinctions; To undertake selected applied research studies and applications there-off in relevant areas of fashion industry; To meet the need of Indian fashion industry and commerce in respect of up-to-date information on fashion technology through research and publication of literature with particular reference to the programmes of fashion industry in India; and To provide technical assistance to artisans, craftsmen, manufacturers, designers and exporters of fashion products. 3.3 Vision To emerge as a centre of excellence and innovation, proactively catalysing growth of fashion business through leadership in professional education with concern for social and human values. 73
5 3.4 NIFT Accreditation Fig : 3.1. NIFT Accreditation NIFT Act 2006 published in the Gazette of India on 14th July, 2006 confers Statutory Status on the Institute. The Act came into effect from 1st April, The President of India is the 'Visitor' of the Institute under the Act. The Act empowers the Institute to award Degrees and other distinctions. NIFT is the first premier institute in India to award its own Degrees in the field of Fashion Education. The Degrees awarded by the Institute are recognised by the academia worldwide. The Institute confers Degrees to the graduates in the Convocation Ceremony marking the occasion when the students leave the realms of the Institute to take up key leadership positions in the industry. 3.5 NIFT Board of Governors Members In accordance with NIFT Act 2006, the Institute consists of the Board of Governors comprising key officials and experts from different areas of expertise. Members of Parliament, representatives from the Ministry or departments in the Government of India, eminent industry experts and educationists broadly comprise the Board of NIFT. NIFT Board is responsible for the general superintendence of the institute and for steering the institute & providing direction in related matters. 74

The administrative structure of NIFT in India 3.6 Facilities The National Institute of Fashion Technology, a premier academic institute of design, management and technology, aims at establishing the benchmark for the quality of professionals that go into the fashion industry. The Institute provides comprehensive and state-of-the-art infrastructure and equipment to impart both practical and theoretical training. The facilities and services offered to the students allow them the freedom to experiment and generate creative ideas. Lively and vibrant campuses are complemented with facilities that equal the best in the world at NIFT. Creative architecture and spaciousness defines all NIFT buildings, which house fully equipped lecture rooms, design studios and laboratories, resource centres, activity centres and hostels. 7 structure emphasises hands-on experience through practical set-ups and stateof-the-art technology Academic Infrastructure Computer Labs In the new age of technological advancements, the success of fashion professionals rests on their ability to integrate fashion and information technology in a meaningful way. The information technology infrastructure is playing a key role in providing an IT enabled learning environment, with the objective of developing computer savvy, well-rounded professionals. All academic departments maintain computer labs thereby integrating IT with the academics. The computer labs are well equipped with state-of-the-art hardware and software like Macintosh servers and work stations, Computers, Plotters, Digitizers, Image Scanners, Wide Format Printers, Sound Mixers, Digital Cameras, etc. All NIFT campuses are covered by the National Knowledge Network (NKN) with connecting speed of 100Mbps/1 Gbps. Video conferencing facilities are available for inter-campus communication. NIFT campuses have fully Wi-Fi enabled setups offering access to secure Internet for the students and faculty. This allows learning to move outside the classroom where students can discuss, learn and grow. All academic programmes of NIFT offer IT applications as part of their curricula. NIFT imparts teaching inputs in industry specific CAD software for Apparel Design, Textile Design, Graphic Design and Accessory Design programmes. Apart from the specialized industry specific software, IT inputs for Animation, 2D/3D Modeling, Photo Imaging and Editing, Enterprise Resource Planning, Product Lifecycle Management, Production Planning and Scheduling; Statistical Analysis and Web Programming are integrated into the academic curriculum. Art Labs and Studios The institute promotes brilliance without boundaries. Students from different disciplines are encouraged to use art labs & studios across disciplines. 76
8 This integrated approach to learning promotes interactivity, arriving at one creative language. The Institute invests in the latest equipment to introduce the updated teaching practices to the class set. Photography Lab The Department of Fashion Communication maintains a photography lab that includes the most advanced hardware used by domain experts. It is equipped with state-of-the-art suspended Elinchrom lights and motorized backdrops, various accessories like diffusing materials, extensions & radio triggers, Manfrotto tilt-pan tripods etc. enhance the learning experience for students. The infrastructure provided not only helps students develop awareness of old and new photography practices but also assists them in realizing ambitious production based projects. Patternmaking and Draping labs Course disciplines imparting inputs in apparel design & apparel technology, maintain pattern making & draping labs. These labs are stocked with specialized pattern making tables & dress forms sourced internationally. The infrastructure provides an environment that allows the students to rigorously apply and contextualize concepts and processes of realizing garments. These labs are the breeding ground for heightened creativity, unique approach and innovative perspectives in relation to garment making. Weaving Lab Textile Design Department maintains a weaving lab that is equipped with tabletop sample looms, offering an effective integration of theoretical and practical inputs to students. The infrastructure provides a creative space for students to arrive at a wholistic approach to enquiry and exploration from an individual perspective in relation to materials, processes and methods within the domain of woven structures. Dyeing & Printing Lab Most NIFT campuses are equipped with a Dyeing & Printing lab that is maintained by the Textile Design Department. The lab provides a stimulating learning environment where the students test their theoretical knowledge by 77
9 gaining practical insight and exposure. The infrastructure allows the students to understand, appreciate and learn different dyeing and printing techniques. Technology Labs NIFT realises the significance of the role of Technology in modern technical education. The technology labs not only support the classroom teaching but also enhance academic deliverance by providing practical insight to the students. The Institute has developed well-stocked Technology labs at all campuses. Knitwear Lab The Department of Knitwear Design is equipped with state of the art machinery required to familiarize the student with industry set-ups. This includes specialized machines for seaming and finishing finegauge circular knit fabric as well as manual flat-knitting and linking machines. The laboratories house computerized flat and circular knitting machines, facilitating an understanding of CAD. This infrastructure provides the students with an opportunity to explore practically and develop design possibilities in their field. Garment Technology Lab Most NIFT campuses are equipped with specialized labs specific to garment technology. RFID fitted lab, ETON system lab, patternmaking lab etc., provide a complete learning environment to students creating a pathway to unmatched career opportunities in the apparel industry. The infrastructure provides an ideal sensitization to contemporary practice in apparel technology methods and techniques. Accessory Design Lab Owing to a strong industrial approach, Accessory Design Department maintains a state-of-the-art lab that houses machines & equipment essential to material handling techniques, model and prototype making. Laser cutting machines and metal & wood lathes allow the students to integrate theoretical knowledge with substantial practical learning. Determined by the Campusspecific course specialization, the lab provides a stimulating workspace for students to acquire a wholistic understanding of machinery and material. 78
10 Leather design Lab The Department of Leather Design allows students to gain hands on experience in processes and methods in relation to handling leather as a material. The department maintains a well-equipped lab that houses the latest technology in sewing and finishing for leather apparel & accessories. Infrastructural framework of machinery for cutting, sewing, fusing, engraving, embossing, skiving, etc. helps students develop an understanding of practical knowhow to realize their design potential to the fullest. Amphitheatre s & Auditoriums NIFT aims at providing an exceptional student experience. The institute promotes academic inclusiveness but with an equal focus on student development through co-curricular opportunities. In most campuses, the amphitheatre is the hub of all student activity. Interesting architecture and highend infrastructure allows students to indulge in a variety of activities in the amphitheatre. Film nights, dance recitals, music shows, intracollegiate & intercollegiate events are mostly conducted in the amphitheatre. Emphasizing on all round development of its students, the institute houses stateof- the-art halls / auditoriums. Some NIFT campuses are equipped with world-class hydraulic ramps that provide an in-house infrastructural framework for fashion shows and other creative pursuits. The halls / auditoriums provide the venue for peer and industry interaction through talk shows, seminars, exhibition & display Others Facilities Resource Centre The National Resource Centre at New Delhi and the Resource Centre at each NIFT centre are pillars of information and knowledge management. Each Resource Centre has an integrated collection of print, visual and creative material resources: the only systematically documented source of information available in India for study of international and contemporary Indian fashion. The Resource Centres also provide information services to the design community, industry practitioners and entrepreneurs. 79
11 The collections at the RCs include: Books and periodicals National and international fashion and textile journals Audio-visuals International collections of YSL, Chanel, Armani, Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, etc. Indian collections of Ritu Kumar, Hemant Trivedi, Rohit Bal, Sunit Verma, etc., and collections of NIFT students Textile collections Services offered: Reference Service Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) Bibliographic Service Indexing Service Circulation service Reprographics Service Colour Service Conference Halls The Institute houses spacious conference/seminar halls that serve as perfect meeting grounds for presentations, interaction and discussions. Showcase The amphitheaters and auditoria at NIFT centres are ideal for student presentations and collection showings. Recreation Zone The Student activity clubs, namely, Cultural & Dramatic Club, Sports, Adventure & Photography Club, Literary Club and Environment & Social Service Club organise a wide spectrum of entertainment, sports and leisure activities on a regular basis. The NIFT campuses have ample space to host events, allowing students to pursue their individual interests and work towards social concerns. 80
12 Chill-out! A variety of food and a friendly atmosphere make the cafeterias ideal for students to relax and interact with their peers. Health Care Medical aid is provided on the campus. A doctor and nurse are available to take care of general and specific ailments. A psychologist is also available on campus to counsel the students. Hostels NIFT provides residential accommodation for girls at all centres. Permanent hostel facilities are available within the campus at Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Raebareli. Though NIFT does not have campus hostel facilities at New Delhi, Kolkata and Gandhinagar, sufficient residential accommodation has been organised for girls. All NIFT hostels are run on a no profit/no loss basis. At Raebareli, on-campus hostel accommodation has been made available for boys as well. All the hostel premises including the ones being run by hiring private residential accommodation are provided with round the clock professional security, a doctor on call and hostel wardens. Recreation facilities like T.V., magazines, some indoor and outdoor games are also available at the hostels. 3.7 A brief profile of select NIFTs Centres. The new era began in the history of fashion design technology education of India with the establishment of four centres in major cities in India. This study is intended to cover the four NIFTs(National Institute of Fashion Technology) Ministry of Textile, Government of India, located at NewDelhi, Mumbai, Bangaluru and Hyderabad. These four NIFTs were chosen based on ranking (infrastructure, placements and year of establishment) and geographical distribution in the country. These places have a historical significance In addition, these NIFTs were chosen for this study are located on the east, north, west and south part of the country, thereby giving some variation in geographic distribution as well. The geographical restricted to New Delhi, Mumbai, 81
13 Bangaluru, Hyderabad only. This study mainly focuses both students and faculty members of select NIFTs centers. 3.8 NIFT Delhi ISO ( ) Certified Fig : 3.2 NIFT Delhi NIFT New Delhi established in the year 1987, catalysed the fashion education movement in the country, and it acted as Head Quarter up to 2002 for all other centres of NIFTs. However the authority felt it right to segregate the administration from functioning of the academia of NIFT New Delhi, restructured and brought at par with other centres. Now the administration of entire NIFT system in India is centralised at New Delhi and all seven centres are functioning as per the guidelines of Head Quarters, stationed at New Delhi. 82
14 NIFT, New Delhi started functioning from temporary leased premises at a posh hotel room initially,and has grown phenomenally over a period of time. Today NIFT, New Delhi is the best centre in regards to its infrastructure, location advantage and the functioning. The state of the art campus is an attraction to young and enthusiastic learners, information seeking designers, manufacturers and others. It has the olders and richest Resource Centre having a rich collections of print and non-print materials. NIFT New Delhi offered the following courses; Academics Sl. Its collections pertaining to fashion studies and research, inherited from the National Resource Centre established in 1987, are unparalleled in the Indian sub-continent. Its integrated collections of materials and print resources support the teaching and research programmes of the Institute. The Resource Centre also provides fee-based information services to the industry and entrepreneurs as well as the researchers, faculty and students of other educational institutions. The leading designer houses, domestic and export companies of NCR are privileged members of the Resource Centre. It also caters to the information needs of a significant number of casual non-members comprising of researchers and entrepreneurs from all over India and abroad. Collections The Resource Centre (RC) has rich collections of print and non-print materials including audio-visual materials, textiles, costumes, fashion accessories and related items. Highly selective collection of print and non-print materials pertaining to core areas of studies such as Design, Fashion, Textiles, History of 84
16 costumes, Life style Accessories, Apparel Construction & Production, International trade, Management and Marketing. Sizeable literature on related areas like Advertising, Visual & Performing arts etc. The print collection also includes leading international and national magazines and journals pertaining to fashion studies and related disciplines. E-Resources The RC subscribes to leading online international databases and periodicals. The subscriptions include Just-style.com, Proquest s ABI/Inform Complete, Design & Applied Art Index (DAAI), Apparel Resources.com and a host of other online resources. The audio-visual materials in DVDs, CDs, slides & videos are primarily used as teaching aid. The materials pertain to history of costumes, history of art, fashion illustration etc.; lessons on garment manufacturing and design collections of NIFT graduates. Forecast Services The most valuable reference collection of RC is the Forecast Collection. NIFT Delhi subscribes to the largest number of forecast services namely, Doneger Creative Services(DCS), Promostyl, Maglieria etc. DCS is available both online and in print. Access to WGSN is provided to students and faculty at the Design Studio. The reference collection of RC also comprise newspaper clippings; trade catalogues from manufacturing industries and retailers; manuals, company profiles; standards, and other information sources Other Non-print materials Costume Collection RC Delhi has the rich collections of designer clothings, regional costumes of India and other countries. International collections in NRC and RC Delhi include works of eminent designers such as YSL, Chanel, Armani, Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana. Among Indian designers there are Ritu Kumar, Hemant 85
17 Trivedi, Rohit Bal, Sunit Verma & several others. Creations of alumni of NIFT Delhi, now leading designers J. J. Valaya, Manish Arora, Rajesh Pratap Singh, Gitanjali Kashyap, Sunita Shankar and many others are showcased here. The image database of the costume collection is under construction. Textiles Collection The Textiles collection in RC has fully documented and methodically arranged collections of fabrics (displayed fabric and region-wise), export fabrics and latest international fabrics procured from leading trend services. The RC also has collections of Fashion Accessories, Findings Collection containing all the materials required to complete a garment. The Swatch library of RC Delhi is the largest in NIFT Facilities Lively and vibrant campus is complemented with facilities that equal the best in the world at NIFT Delhi. Creative architecture and spaciousness defines the NIFT building, which house fully equipped lecture rooms, design studios and laboratories, resource centre, activity centres. The education structure emphasises hands-on experience through practical set-ups and state-of-the-art technology. Design Studios & Techno Labs The design studios on campus offer ample opportunity to students to experiment and innovate, while the laboratories provide hi-technology work areas covering real-time aspects of the industry 86
18 Resource Center The National Resource Centre and the Resource Centre at New Delhi are pillars of information and knowledge management. Each Resource Centre has an integrated collection of print, visual and creative material resources the only systematically documented source of information available in India for study of international and contemporary Indian fashion. The Resource Centre also provide information services to the design community, industry practitioners and entrepreneurs NIFT MUMBAI Fig : 3.3 NIFT Centre, Mumbai Mumbai was called as Bombay, the vibrant and pulsating capital of Maharastra, originally has seven islands of Colaba, Fort, Byculla, Parel, Worli, Matunga and Dahisar. Successive reclaimations have linked up the islands in to a single large land mass. The early inhabitants were Kolis or fishermen. Today Mumbai is confluence of varied culture cross bread of community, which has given it the unique position of being the most cosmopolitan city in the country. The population of the city is made up of variety of people, coming from practically all over the country. They are known for their hard working, ambitious and active. The impact of westernisation is visible in the city and so it belongs to international culture. Mumbai is called as business centre of India for the reason 87
19 of existence of national stock exchange and Bombay stock exchange. The money market forces of the country are determined by the trends of the trade-taking place in Mumbai. This campus is one of the largest out of the other 16 NIFT centers across India. The AfW has modules on acquisition, cataloguing, circulation, serials, article indexing and OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue). The bibliographic information (i.e., Title, Author, Subject, key words etc.) of all the resources available in the centre can be accessed through OPAC in intranet. The resource centre has implemented bar-code based computerized circulation system. Digitization of resources is under progress. The resource centre is monitored and installed with 3M Security (Detection) System along with CCTV surveillance. The resource centre has local area network (LAN) consisting of 20 Pentium computers connected with high speed Wi-Fi internet connection. It is approximately 22 kms from the Secunderabad Railway Station; 16 kms from the Hyderabad Railway Station and 30 kms from the Hyderabad Airport. Major residential and shopping areas Punjagutta, Ameerpet, etc. are within 9-10 kms range. Two Blocks Institutional buildings accommodate class-rooms, studios, workshops, resource Centre, IT-Lab, Administration, Canteen, etc. fully equipped to provide learning environment to the students. Girls Hostel 300 girls students can be accommodated at the Girls Hostel located inside the campus, Madhapur.. Madhapur is one of the beautiful and posh areas of the Hyderabad. Cyber Towers, Shilpa Kala Vedika, State Art Gallery etc. are at a walking distance. Hostel rooms are well equipped with the bed, study table, chair, almirah, etc. It has a visitor s room, medical room, 24 hours hot-water facilities. 24 hours lady care-takers, lady warden, Doctor on call and security are provided. 29 Sports & Recreation NIFT-Hyderabad campus is vibrant and happening place by lots of celebrations, functions and events round the year. Club activities, namely, cultural; sports; literary and dramatics; environment and social club activities are regular features. At the all NIFT centers sports, cultural, literary & dramatics and ESS annual event-converge, held at the NIFT-Hydrabad, in December-09, the students of the center won Overall Converge Trophy. NIFT-Shop All stationary and consumable items of the academic requirements are made available on the campus NIFT-Shop. Photocopying, printing, binding and lamination etc documentation services are also available at the discounted annual rate contract. Medical Doctor A qualified medical Doctor visits the campus everyday - Afternoon for consultation. Free of charge medical facility including immediately required medicines are provided. The Doctor is available on call-basis in case of emergency. The Doctor can be consulted at her/his clinic without any fees to be paid by the students. Medi-claim Insurance All students are insured for the hospitalization Medi-claim. Each student is insured for up to Rs. 50, 000/- annual limits of hospitalization expenses. International periodicals in print version have been subscribed under NIFT consortia,a centralized subscriptions made by NRC. Indian periodicals on fashion,fashion business, fashion retailing, textiles, interiors,architecture, art and crafts, technology, management, merchandising and garment manufacturing. E-Resources Resource Centre of NIFT Bengaluru offer access to a rich repository of electronic resources comprising e-books, e-journals, online databases and services, an image library and institutional repository of intellectual assets produced by the students and faculty of NIFT. Access to these services are restricted to bonafide students and faculty of NIFT only. Materials collection Costumes The Resource Centre (RC) showcase regional costumes of India as well as designer clothing. All the Resource Centres have representative collections of costumes. The repertoire includes the traditional and contemporary, stitched and unstitched, embroidered and plain clothing of all strata of the society. 36 Textiles The Textiles collections in the Resource Centre have fully documented and methodically arranged collections of fabric swatches and pieces used for teaching purpose. Swatches are categorized according to fabrics or regions for display. Fabric samples received from various trend services and export houses are also displayed for academic reference. Penalty for Loss of Book(s) In case of loss of a book borrowed by a member, he/she will either replace the same title or pay three times the cost of the book with overdue fines. 105
37 Penalty for Pilferage If any member is caught carrying any unissued material out of RC, he/she will pay the fine applicable at the circulation counter. The member will be debarred for six months only National Resource Centre Fig : 3.7 National Resource Centre The National Resource Centre (NRC) acts as the coordinating body for development of all the Resource Centres (RCs) in terms of collection development, manpower planning, information management, infrastructure planning, automation and standardization. The department also manages the consortium of all RCs to achieve optimum resource sharing and costeffectiveness in acquisition of learning resources. The activities of NRC include the following: Selective Collection Development of Books NRC undertakes selective collection development for all RCs or any particular RC for special or newly introduced academic programmes. Centralized procurement of e-books is undertaken by NRC as a cost-effective measure. NRC also acquires multiple copies of select books in print version for all RCs Consortium Subscriptions of Electronic Databases and Periodicals The consortium managed by NRC subscribes to international electronic online databases and periodicals for access by all RCs. 38 Management of Multi-Location Library Management Software NRC coordinates installations and functioning of the cloud based multilocation library management software, e-granthalaya of NIC, that offers access to integrated catalogues and user services of all the Resource Centres of NIFT Development of a Digital Institutional Repository NRC has undertaken various activities related to digital preservation of select print and non-print materials in the collections of RCs. It is engaged in creation of an institutional repository of graduation project reports, dissertations, theses and other intellectual assets of the institution. NRC has also initiated digitization of teaching aids including textiles, costumes and accessories of high reference value in the collections of all RCs. The department has undertaken development of various databanks related to the fashion industry such as, design bank, national products and services directory, photo archive, etc Other Resource Sharing Activities NRC aims to facilitate optimum resource sharing among the Resource Centres to achieve equitable development of all the NIFT centres. These services are available online in all the NIFT centres and few are also available in print. PROMOSTYL* Promostyl is a pioneer among the fashion trend services of the world. The company has its head office in Paris and offices in other metros of the world. This trend service presents a global view of trends, fashion and design. Promostyl covers all sectors ranging from mass market to luxury. The publications of Promostyl are available in both print and electronic versions. WGSN WGSN is a global online fashion forecasting service with offices throughout Europe, Asia, North and South America and the Middle East. The trend service was launched in 1998 for the fashion and design industries, providing trend forecasting and analysis to the influential businesses in the world. The leading trend service Style sight is also accessible on the platform of WGSN after the merger of two services. Materials Collections Costumes The Resource Centres (RCs) showcase regional costumes of India and other countries as well as designer clothing. All the Resource Centres have 110

The repertoire includes the traditional and contemporary, stitched and unstitched, embroidered and plain clothing of all strata of the society. Selective creations of the students of NIFT are documented and inventoried in all RCs. Collections of NIFT alumni, now designers of international repute such as, Gitanjali Kashayp, J.J. Valaya, Rohit Bal, Suneet Verma, Manish Arora, Namrata Joshipura, Rajesh Pratap Singh, Sabyasachi Mukherjee and many others can be viewed in the respective Resource Centres. Creations of leading Indian designers such as Ritu Kumar, Hemant Trevedi and several others are also showcased at NIFT Delhi. The Online design collections can be viewed in Resource centres in NIFT campuses. International collections in NIFT Delhi RC include costumes of various countries sourced by the faculty. 43 E-Resources e-books A rich collection of e-books has been developed by NRC for 24/7 perpetual access by the students and faculty of NIFT. Please contact your Resource Centre for further details about access to the fulltext e-books. Subscribed Online Databases & Periodicals Digital Institutional Repository A digital repository of the intellectual assets produced by the students and faculty of NIFT since the inception of the institution is under construction. NRC has undertaken development of the following sub-repositories : Digital library of Theses and Dissertations of NIFT (DLTDN) A digital library of the electronic versions of theses, dissertations and project reports of graduated students of all NIFT Centres is under construction on e-granthalaya. Executive summaries of selective projects are currently 112
44 available for reference. NRC plans to digitize the archive of the diploma project reports available in print across all old NIFT centres. Image library NRC is co-ordinating the development of a digital repository of visual resources including video recordings of fashion shows of all NIFT centres, process based study materials developed by the senior faculty and images of items in the collections of costumes, textiles and fashion accessories. Selective digitization of old audio-visual materials such as slides and photographs has been undertaken in old NIFT centres. Rights to viewing and downloading of these images are restricted. Repository of study materials NRC is planning to develop a repository of study materials developed by the faculty based on an open source learning management system. Official publications of NIFT Publications of NIFT since 1987 in the form of Annual Reports, Project reports, books, monographs and periodicals are being digitized for preservation and universal access.
