(1910-2000) The Creation silk and cotton embroidery 253 x 66.5cm * Constance Mildred Howard An internationally renowned figure in the stitched textile movement, Howard played a major part in changing the general perception of textiles from domestic tea cosies and tray cloths to an expressive art form. The Creation was made circa 1970 using the Sans Blas technique and incorporating hand as well as machine stitching. The strong colours symbolise night and day with the moon and sun in yellow and red respectively. Another example with a similar case, and signed by the Parisian clockmaker Charles Le Roy, is illustrated in Encyclopédie de la Pendule Français, by Pierre Kjellberg, page 203. Thomas Snow is recorded as working in Knaresborough, Yorkshire from 1834 until at least 1844 where it is known he had a shop. He is quite probably the maker of the same name working at Bewerley, near Pateley Bridge and who sold clocks at Otley market. He was the son of the clockmaker William Snow, and known to have voted at Otley in 1807. * Notes. Christopher Wright is recorded as a clock-dial maker working in Summer Row, Birmingham from 1833 until 1845 when in 1846 the business was transferred to a relative, John Wright Fletcher. Samuel Pearse was christened in Sidbury on the 29th of September 1778, his parents being William & Sarah Pearse both from the South Hams area of South Devon. He married Ann Bowdige, from Axminster, on the 10th of June 1806 and they had five children. Pearse is recorded as working in Lyme Street, Axminster, Devon from at least 1830 when he advertised for an apprentice. His first wife, Ann, died before 1828, the year he married Arundel Webber on the 30th of August. At some point in his later life Samuel moved with his family to Wellington in Somerset before moving, circa 1851, to be with his youngest daughter Caroline in Woodbury, Devon where he died in 1864 having moved into his own residence some three years or so previously. 825 An early 18th century thirtyhour oak longcase clock the birdcage movement with flat iron pillars, decorative steel work to the hammer stop and striking on a bell, the nine-anda-half inch square brass dial having a raised chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals and fleur-de-lys half hour markings, with a single blued-steel hand, the dial centre engraved with floriate decoration, with cast cheruband-crown spandrels to the four corners, contained in a later purpose made oak case, height 212cms. 400 600 826 John Oliver, Manchester a mahogany moonphase longcase clock the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the twelve-inch brass breach-arch dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals, flame half-hour markings, diamond half quarter-hour markings and signed John Oliver, Manchester, the matted dial centre with ringed winding holes, subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, with Indian-head cast spandrels to the four corners with wheatear border engraving, with blued decorative steel hands, the arch with a penny-moon aperture within a silvered date ring showing the moon date via a blued steel hand, the oak case having a double caddy top to the hood, with the full pillars having giltwood capitals and fretwork to the arched frieze, with a shaped top to the trunk door, height 228cm. 800-1200 *Biography. John Oliver, born 1682, is recorded as working in Manchester from at least 1713 when he took on his first apprentice, Thomas Cheetham, having married Elizabeth Rydings in February 1712 with whom he had a number of children including Richard, an Attorney at Law who arranged the sale of his entire stock in 1749. Having retired at sixty-seven, his clockmaking business was taken over by another son, also John, who announced his intention to return to Manchester from London in July 1751. He died, aged 84, in January 1766 and was buried at St Ann s Church. John Senior was known as a maker of clocks with a moonphase set within 201
