8 682 A 19th century embroidered raised work tapestry panel of rectangular outline with flowerhead and trailing foliate decoration to an ivory ground, cm. * A pair of early 18th century silk pictures depicting semi-naked females dressed in flowing robes and holding bows and arrows, castles in the background, one possibly Diana, the other possibly Ursula, each panel within a green velvet border, 52 x 27cm. * A Chinese silk embroidered collar, the shaped green ground surround embroidered with insects, birds and central peony blossom within an inner blue ground band with gilt scrolls, hung with a central tassel and embroidered pointed bands, on a mahogany tripod base. * Pat Johns Exe Valley, a tapestry hanging signed, inscribed and dated 1979, 97 x 150 cm. * Pat Johns is an Internationally known tapestry weaver and member of the Devon Guild of Craftsmen. Examples of her work can be found at Dartington Hall and she designed the altar cloth at Exeter cathedral. 686 After Patrick Proctor Silver Jubilee, 1977, a printed silk scarf, 86 x 86cm, together with one other St Ives scarf after Patrick Heron. 15 725 An Indo Tibetan thangka the centre decorated with the seated figure of Buddha, surrounded by other deities and attendants on the path to enlightenment, mounted within a silk panel border, 95 x 62cm. 726 A 19th century Persian bronze and silver figure of a stag with inlaid Arabic decoration of scrolls and cartouches to it s head, body and upper legs, 39.5cm. high. 727 An African wood and metal Kilimba or thumb piano carved with geometric designs, 18th/19th century, 28 x 10 cm. * A Far Eastern buddhistic thangka of traditional design, the central scene of a temple interior with Buddha seated, within rings decorated with levels of enlightenment and other deities, contained within a silk brocade border, 94 x 56cm. * A Mfengu bead work belt, with brass studded waistband over black and white and black and pink bead fringe, coloured wool ties, 165cm long. By Family repute, this item was obtained by Major General Sir Samual Benfield Sam Steele ( ) who was a distinguished police officer and soldier. He was the third officer sworn into the North-West Mounted Police in 1873 and was head of the Yukon detachment during the Klondike gold rush and was commanding officer of Lord Strathcona s Horse ( Royal Canadians) during the Boer war. * All lots subject to a buyers premium of 21% plus 20% 141

18 736 A 19th century Norwegian burr elm peg tankard, of traditional form with domed carved hinged lid and lion finial, shaped handle and squat lion shaped feet, 33cm high. 737 A Nepalese buddhistic thangka centred with a seated Buddha, the circle divided by various paths to enlightenment, decorated with assorted deities and demons and enclosed by entwined dragon border, signed Prem Lama, 60 x 45cm. 738 An ancient Greek pottery Oinochoe (wine vessel) of ovoid form with banded decoration, moulded lip and spout and scroll handle, 17cm. high, possibly 4th century BC, together with a small lekythos oil vessel, decorated with warriors, on a spreading circular foot, 13.5cm. high. * A 19th century treen egg-shaped box with screw top decorated in low relief with flowerheads and ribbons, 6.5cm high, a carved treen rectangular snuff box decorated both top and bottom with male and female busts, 5cm. wide and a circular treen box with musical trophy decoration, 5cm. diameter. * A 19th century carved Dieppe ivory figure of an Elizabethan minstrel wearing a broad hat with feather plume, split jerkin, hose and sock, mounted on a polished wood base, overall height 18cm. * A late 19th century gilt bronze bear paperweight modelled with three gilt decorated bears climbing on a rocky outcrop, 18cm. high. *

20 A Private Collection of Treen and Related Items 749 Two American treen mixing or dough bowls one inscribed Munising, probably 1920s, 28 and 31 cm diameter [2]. * A 19th century sycamore treen dairy bowl the exterior with double ring bands and raised foot rim, 42 cm diameter. * A Georgian fruitwood cat with six turned spindles and central spherical boss, 39 cm wide. * A cat was used to support a plate or dish to be warmed by the fireplace and the name may have derived from a cat s favoured position next to the fire or the way in which it falls on its feet. 752 A 19th Century Tunbridge ware inkstand in rosewood, inlaid with floral and geometric borders, together with two glass inkwells; 26 cm wide. * A 17th Century carved oak linenfold panel the centre carved with an interlocking design of beadwork and stylised scrolling foliage within linenfold borders, 64 x 18 cm. * Two Westcountry Friendly Society brass pole heads for Ilchester, established 1798, in the form of a crescent star, on turned wood base, 31 cm; and one similar for Cullompton, established 1850, in the form of a hand pierced by a heart, 16 cm perspex stand [2]. * A small bronze tripod cauldron with iron swing handle, triangular founder s mark, 17th/18th century, 15 cm wide. * An 18th Century Scottish fruitwood and iron candlestick and a plain metal candlestick the first with adjustable spiral steel stem, 20 cm [2]. *

The Exeter branch of the family included, amongst others, William Upjohn, baptised in 1754 and who moved to London in 1803; John Upjohn, born 1771, who married Maria Wittingham before moving to London, when on his return in 1803 he took over the premises of William before dying in 1848 after a long and painful illness, borne with Christian fortitude ; their son Robert Wittingham Upjohn, also a chronometer maker born 1807, who took over from his father as keeper of the Exeter Cathedral clock where his initials can be found carved and dated J. Firderer, Birmingham, a rosewood drop-dial wall clock the eight-day duration single-fusee timepiece movement having an anchor escapement, the painted twelve-inch round convex dial having black Roman numerals, decorative blued steel hands and signed for the maker J.
