Comeniuss Museums education and modern society In year 1932 architect P.Kundziņš defined the mission of this museum: This museum wants to collect our nations cultural objects in the sequence they were made and used in the past times to create major pictures of the old time lifestyles and the environment of living.

What is this museum? It is the Latvian Ethnographical open-air museum one of the oldest open-air museums in Europe. More than 150 000 object in the museum s collections more than 4000 objects exposed in many exhibitions, 24 000 descriptions and drawings with people s lifestyles and over 80 000 visual pieces like pictures and videos. The museum has to be used for defining the living of old time Latvian People in the way they really used to live.

Methods I have created my own methods how to make the museum more interesting for students and other young people: There s a possibility to have a typical Latvian dinner in the Old Pine Pub; You can always buy souvenirs that are made on the base of ancient Latvian ornaments; When entering the museum, a page with crosswords will be given to the student. While going through the museum the student will have to fill the crosswords with names of houses and objects.
The museum s offers To view Latvian houses and other buildings from 17. 20.century; There are many events held at every typical Latvian celebration; Annual old-time typed market where you can buy many handmade items; You can also visit the public worshipping sessions in the Old Usmas Church; You can have a look on the thematic exhibitions; You can have a part in the dancing feast in every Latvian celebration; At wedding ceremonies you can also create a lucky horseshoe with help from a professional blacksmith; You can have a part in many other Latvian traditions. The museum is open from 10AM-7.30PM every day, in Summer (from the 1 st of June to the 30 th of August) The autumn-winter season begins in the 1 st of October. The museum is open from 10AM-5PM Wednesday to Sunday in the Autumn-winter season. The ticket price in the autumn-winter season is 1LVL for grown-ups 0.75LVL for students and 0.50LVL for seniors and kids. Ending Latvia is usually known only because of its dark occupation ages and other war related events, that are always underlined like they would be the main part of Latvia s lifeline. This museum show the good things and the good ages of Latvia s history, so it would be more interesting to look at and hear about for the exchange student. I believe that it would be better if the student takes home only the good things about this country, not the bad things. I think that this museum is very interesting and full of information that could make the history of Latvia more fun and full for many foreigners. When viewing the buildings and talking about the ancient and not so ancient objects, I could tell many interesting things about my relatives, that would make the visit of the museum even more interesting, also making the visit to Latvia more useful and interesting.
