2014 No VACANCY Gallery, Melbourne Fashion and architecture can be shown to share formal correspondences regarding form in relation to the body and space. This is evidenced, for example, in the oeuvre of Lucy Orta and exhibitions such as Skin + Bones (MOCA, 2006). Louise Crewe (2010) and Bradley Quinn (2003) have explored these correspondences in text, while current practices including the Jorge Alaya Aatelier School in Paris, and the fashion designer, Iris Van Herpen, demonstrate innovation in form made possible through experimentation involving hybrid traditional and digital methods in both disciplines. The research question addressed by this project is: how can the form of garments be innovated using hybrid approaches from fashion and architecture practice? The use of architectural digital modelling software such as Rhino, is only recently being explored in the context of fashion design. Experimentation with digital modelling and traditional pattern cutting techniques develop a new, hybrid method for making garments. The resulting garments exlore how abtracted, spatial properties can be used by designers when creating garments. Spatial flexibility is represented in the exhibition installation, which involves two forms of the same garment expressed differently. The exhibition included other objects used in the hybrid process to develop these garment forms, including paper patterns, printed fabric images and sculptural models. Presented at No VACANCY Gallery, a Melbourne exhibition space that supports emerging and experimental artistic work, the exhibition (12-22 March 2014) was part of the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival Cultural Program, an annual curated festival which includes a substantial cultural program supporting the diversity of fashion practices in Australia. 1

MAKE.SHIFT CONCEPTS is a collaborative research practice through which the designers explore trans-disciplinary crossings between fashion, textiles, art and architecture. Each designer brings a particular expertise to the practice, which when combined, is expanded into something new. ARCHITECTONIC is an installation in which garments are represented as transformative structures. Structures that are solid and structures that are soft, depending upon the materials and imagery through which they are made. Each garment through its different mode of representation reveals a new aspect of the form, and this is further expanded through the incorporation of graphic imagery. ARCHITECTONIC combines the presentation of graphic imagery, sculptural forms and garments. Each of these forms relates to the other, through processes the designers work through together. Working with the idea of continual transformation, the designers apply an iterative process, which involves abstractions and re-combinations of digital and analogue technologies. Each designer, using their particular expertise, engages in an experimental way to create the final installation. ARCHITECTONIC http://artguide.com.au/whats-onpage/show/architectonic/ http://www.broadsheet.com. au/melbourne/events/event/ architectonic-makeshiftconcepts-2014-03-12 ARCHITECTONIC references experimental fashion and textile practice and modes of presentation, where expectations of fashion are challenged. In this type of practice, garments are created in response to collaboration, rather than to established conventional methodologies or directly to the body. The resulting forms tell a story about collaboration. MAKE.SHIFT CONCEPTS is formed by textile practitioner, Armando Chant, fashion practitioner, Donna Sgro and spatial designer, Olivier Solente. 5
