February 2017 NEWSLETTER Meetings are held the 1 st Thursday of the month from 6:30 8:30 pm at The McConnell Arts Center, 777 Evening St., Worthington, Ohio (There are no meetings scheduled during July and August) Note: Our first meeting on this new schedule is this Thursday, Feb. 2nd, at 6:30 pm. Newsletter Editor: Jim Oberst jim@jimoberst.com Message from our President Well, of course one of the only snows so far this winter was on the night of our COWS meeting. I didn t have much in Clintonville but all the people on the east side had more and reported lots of accidents. I am excited that Ron Mlicki will be our demonstrating artist at Thursday s meeting, February 2 nd. A full scholarship to the Cooper School of Art in Cleveland, Ohio, led him to a career in the world of advertising. After years of working, Ron received a degree in business and established his own graphic design firm. During 40 successful years, Ron Mlicki and his staff created many award-winning advertising programs for local, national, and global companies. Transitioning his company to his son has allowed Ron to rekindle that first love -- drawing and

painting the human form. His work has been included in numerous juried exhibitions where has also won awards. You can view is art on his website, https://www.ronaldmlickifineart.com. A little background on why we moved the meetings to evenings. When I first joined COWS in 1987, all of our meetings were on Wednesday evenings, 7 pm at Capital University. At our meeting last September, we had a discussion about changing the meeting time. A number of people expressed that Saturday mornings were not good because of children and grandchildren s sports, people go away for the weekend, members take and teach classes on Saturdays, & OSU games. We asked for a show of hands of who would support moving the meeting back to evenings. It was an overwhelming majority in support of evening meetings. I realize that some of our older members do not like to drive after dark. Please feel free to look at the roster and find someone close to you to see if they would give you a ride. Another fun idea is to plan to meet members for dinner before the meeting. There are a number of restaurants in downtown old Worthington. I would like to again ask members to log on to our web site http://www.centralohiowatercolorsociety.com, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on by-laws. I would suggest everyone read or re-read them. Article II, Section E, #5 states, All new members are required to serve on a committee for two years following their acceptance into the society. Article IV, Section E lists the committees. I am happy to say a number of our new members have really stepped up and I m tickled with their enthusiasm and willingness to give their time. Looking forward to seeing you this coming Thursday. Suzanne Accetta Announcements 2017 Dues were due on January 1. If you have not yet paid, please bring a check for $30 made out to Central Ohio Watercolor Society to our February meeting, or send your check to our treasurer: Sandra Gaunt 4795 Hayden Blvd Columbus OH 43221 If you re not sure whether or not you ve paid, contact Sandra at gaunt.2@osu.edu.

Fran Mangino won a Merit Award with Peace River Painter's Annual open air exhibition in Punta Gorda, Florida. But better yet, Fran received an email informing her that her painting You Looking At Me was accepted into the AWS exhibition at Salmungundi Art Club in New York City. Fran advises to never stop working to improve your ability to paint. Rewards will be there when you least expect it. If you feel an old painting needs improvement, go for it. Some say just leave it, go to something new. Don't listen to others. Do what your heart tells you. Happy painting! Rick Mock sold his painting Fall Feelings that was on display at the Riffe Center. And he was commissioned to paint a similar painting by another collector. Rick thanks Sally for nurturing this exhibit opportunity. Jim Oberst has several paintings on exhibit at Griffin Gallery at Creekside, 77 Mill Street in Gahanna. Our Spring Show will return to the Ft. Hayes Shot Tower Gallery, March 6 to April 7. The show entry form is attached to the Newsletter email, and is also available on our website. Marilyn Bedford provided the following Call for Entries: Studios on High Gallery, located in Columbus' Short North Arts District, is inviting 2D and 3D artists to submit work for our March spring show. This show will feature 25-35 Ohio artists in our semiannual "Hit the Hop" series. All 2D and 3D original artwork may be submitted. 1st place award winner will be offered a featured show in the gallery.
