Animal Kingdom Thank You Michelle for the Mini Visit! Was Fantastic ADULT DAY PROGRAM #103-20256 56TH AVE Langley, BC V3A 3Y6 Lions, elephants, and orangutans, oh my! August celebrates all these wonderful animals with World Lion Day on August 10, World Elephant Day on August 12, and International Orangutan Day on the 19th. While all of these species are precious and majestic, why should we celebrate such animals? To celebrate animals is to celebrate our human relationship with the entire animal kingdom, of which we are a part. Humans have evolved from hunters and gatherers, to herders, to guardians and conservationists. We humans have made advances that have allowed us to populate the world, but we cannot do this at the expense of animals. Human health and animal health are interconnected. Only together, as a united animal kingdom, will we survive.

Birthstone Peridot The peridot, the birthstone for the month of August, is a beau ful stone that ranges in color from olive to lime green, although it some mes has a brownish nt. It is one of the few gemstones that is found in one color. The green color is due to the Presence of iron. Stones with a brownish nt have higher levels of iron. The peridot is one of the oldest known gemstones. It has es to ancient Egypt, where it was o en shaped into beads and worn for protec on. The ancient Egyp ans believed the stone could protect its wearer from evil. It is believed that Cleopatra s emerald collec on was actually a collec on of peridot gems and not emeralds. The largest peridot ever found weighs 311.78 carats and belongs to the Smithsonian. The Kremlin owns a 192-carat peridot of fine, clear olive green. The stone is part of the Russian crown jewels. Did You Know? Tootsie Rolls were introduced in 1896 by Leo Hirshfield. He named them a er his daughter, whose nickname was Tootsie. August s Here The brilliant poppy flaunts her head Amidst the ripening grain, And adds her voice to swell the song That August s here again. ~ Helen Maria Winslow
Flower of the Month Gladiolus The gladiolus is a flowering plant that belongs to the iris family. It grows most frequently in the Mediterranean region, Asia, and the tropical parts of Africa, where its pink, purple, and white flowers can blossom in the full sunlight. The stems and leaves of the gladiolus stand tall and have pointed ps. It comes as no surprise, then, that the gladiolus flower gets its name from the La n word for sword (gladius). In ancient mes, it also went by the name of xiphium, a er the Greek word xiphos, which also means sword. In Rome, the gladiolus is s ll regarded as the flower of the gladiators. The gladiolus can represent many different things. For example, in many cultures it signifies remembrance, but the Victorians used the gladiolus as a symbol of infatua on, implying that the giver s heart has been pierced with passion. Weather or Not As the summer nears its end and we inch closer to fall, let s use some August weather lore to try to predict what the next winter will be like! Pay a en on to the first week of this month if it is unusually warm, it means that the coming winter will be snowy and long. Was this month cold? If so, it means that the following winter will be harsh and dry.
