Next General Meeting November 4 th Member CRITIQUE Donna Levine is leading our critique. All members & guests are invited to participate with work and suggestions for the work. Please join us! Critique begins promptly at 5:45 pm and runs to 6:45 pm prior to the General meeting. Paintings and drawings do not need to be framed. Unfinished pieces are welcome for suggestions to finish them. Those members arriving with work after 6:15 risk not having their work critiqued depending on volume of work brought in earlier. 1 painting only per person please. As an artist who has been living in Arizona most of my life I derive much of my inspiration from the desert around me. My medium of choice to capture the textures and brilliance of the plants and animals is colored pencils. Each drawing consists of layer upon layer of color, to bring out the many subtle hues that nature itself provides. Colored pencil provides a medium that is well suited to exploring the variety of effects and textures from parched crusty bark and dried leaves to waxy smooth flesh of the prickly pear cactus or shiny scales and dry folds of skin on the reptiles. Classes and Workshops Shemer Art Center and Museum Teaching Drawing and Colored Pencil classes. Contact Shemer for schedule at: http://www.shemerartcenter.org/ The Art Institute at Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum Teaching Colored Pencil classes. Contact Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum for schedule at: http://www.desertmuseum.org. ~Freddie Lieberman, 1 st VP of Programs 1 st Tuesday Night of each Month after 5:45 p.m. We would prefer that participants in the critique please not bring paintings that are freshly wet, oils particularly, as the paint gets on our hands and clothes from handling the pieces and then paint is transferred to other works and the carpet in the critique area. If you have a frame to put the painting in for handling purposes that will be appreciated. Thanks from the critique leaders. ~ Jim Garrison, Critique Master 1 NOTE: Granite Reef does NOT connect to Indian Bend Rd.

Thanks to Scottsdale public art director Donna Isaac our eyes were opened as she gave us a wonderful presentation showing us that in Scottsdale AZ Art is all around us from the freeways to the waterfront and the sky space in between. We are gearing up for a busy season starting with the Holiday Party on the 2nd of December then The Butterfly Wonderland Show starting Dec 5th through the 7th.. We need Volunteers for both. This is our first year for The Butterfly Wonderland Show/Sale. Marsha Klinger will need help for this exciting opportunity. Please contact her and get involved. We will also be having the holiday party at our December meeting. The raffle won't be as big last year because the DBG show will fund the Scholarship program. We will continue to support the Scholarship by using the proceeds from the raffle to add to the program. We need volunteers to solicit donations from businesses to help raise money. The baskets were wonderful last year. I ask that those of you that helped to make last year s program such a success help the cause again. I will have the tax sheets available at the November meeting. Most business need to summit their donations for approval so the sooner the better. Please contact me or sign up at the November meeting. ~Thank You, Terry Armstrong Hamra, President Rules for entering Artist of the Month You cannot enter a piece that has been in the critique that same evening and you must have attended at least 3 meetings this fiscal year. She spoke about the different budgets the city has for purchasing art. Some of the venues she showed were: The LOVE sculpture which we all recognize Some displays at the Windows of the West Building Art at and around the Appaloosa and Civic Libraries The 3.2 million dollar Paulo Soleri Bridge and many pieces on the waterfront Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, especially SKY SPACE The freeway art that Carolyn Braaksma did called The Path Most Traveled The Herb Mignery piece that ties to the Pony Express Ride each year from Holbrook to Scottsdale The new round-a-bouts will host new sculptures. A contest to decide what birds would read for a sculpture; the entry boxes are at the libraries. The canal convergence display to be held in March sounds spectacular 4

It was delightful! We photographed and I sketched for the full two hours. It was peaceful and as I sat quietly they came to land on me and on my sketch book. We cannot paint because they may land in the paint but the sketching was fun and seemed to draw their attention. The staff was helpful and excited about our show. I learned some more about the butterflies and my spirits were lifted as high as their flight. 7

As a child and as a student, I always drew and doodled. Starting with designing fashion for my paper dolls and writing story books, to majoring in art in college and completing the Famous Artist Schools through correspondence, I always had some creative success. Everything I painted in college was sold or given away and as a young mother, I turned to sewing, crafting and creating with my children. Now my children are grown, I am retired from a teaching career and I have jumped back into painting with both feet. Stand in Courage There are patterns everywhere I look, in an animal s fur, in flower petals, even in the ceramic floor of my kitchen. I want to capture and experience every one. So I paint, sometime with intricate detail of pattern, sometimes focusing on color, but always with my re-found eyes. Watercolor is my choice medium for now as I love to see what it will give to me. I try to apply the paint to the water, allowing the free flow of color to surprise me with its beautiful effects. The water always seems to be in charge. I may use a brush, sponge, pen or cottage cheese lid but when the day is done, the water has done most of the creation. Many of my paintings lately are rich with burnt sienna or yellow. Maybe they are a result of my surroundings in the warm Arizona sun. When I am by the sea, the cool blues and greens emerge. Away From the Current Once in a while I will paint with oil. I prefer old fashioned linseed oil and turpentine to the more modern products because the smell of oil and turpentine takes me back in history. (Maybe to another life time ) At that time I feel like I have always been a painter. My paintings seem to be gentle and joyful, bringing smiles to people. I love to see someone notice the detail and step closer to look carefully at the tiny strokes and color changes. Lately, I have been painting the intentions of love, joy, laughter and healing into my paintings and find that those who need them are drawn to them. Sea It Makes a Difference Most of my work comes from photos I take as I travel and explore on vacations. At those times I relax and take the time to really enjoy my surroundings and want to capture them. Of late I have done several commissioned pieces for friends. They take a photo and I create a painting for them. I paint landscapes, flowers, animals and water. I do love water. And I do love to paint.
