Page 2 October 4, 2014 - Downtown Oshkosh Gallery Walk October 4 & 5, 2014 - Art From The Barn - Omro October 7, 2014 - OFAA meeting The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls. Pablo Picasso Fall has arrived and with it nature s palette of bright colors. Isn't autumn a wonderful time of year for inspiration and motivation? Some of us need added motivation to get our creative juices flowing. Sharon and I devised a way to get motivated and we will share our idea with you during the art break at the October 7th meeting. If anyone has art fair yard signs please bring them to the meeting. We will be ordering new signs this year as most are in need of replacement. The wire stands will be placed in the storage unit and reused. Troy Jones, photographer, will be on hand for our program for October. His presentation is sure to be interesting and informative. The Chili Feast will be held at Gruenhagen Hall during our November meeting. Gruenhagen Hall is across the street form the UWO Alumni Welcome and Conference Center. Please see Joyce Tornow to sign up for what type of chili or other chili fixin's you would like to provide for our feast. Don't forget to bring your appetite for good chili, a bowl and utensils! Minutes for September 9, 2014 Page 3 President Jill Soik opened the meeting and thanked all for a successful year. Jill introduced her guest - Vicki Walsh Terri introduced her guests - Troy Jones and Ann Paremski and we also had a walk in guest from the University. Terri won the drawing for a $15 gift card from Hobby Lobby. Hospitality: Joyce Tornow will be coordinating the Chili Feast for November s meeting at Gruenhagen Hall. Secretary s Report: Minutes from the June meetings were approved. Treasurer s Report: General - $16446.58 Scholarship - $113.64 (A.B. fund $ 12.00 and the student fund $101.64) Workshops: Lynn Artz and Sandy DePeaux reported that the first workshop will be held on Nov. 15 (Sat.) from 9 - Noon. Jenna Larson will teach fused glass & enamel workshop at the City Center. February s workshop will be held at Gruenhagen Hall and will feature Ryan Radke with watercolor painting. Date is still to be determined. They are also looking into the costs to bring an artist in from further away to hold one or two sessions of paper marbling. More information to come. Scholarships: Cori Conrad used her award from the Adela Baumhardt Member Scholarship to study Batik methods in Door County. She will present in Nov. UWO is open for us to be flexible with our awards. The SOFA show will not be part of the scholarship offering this year. If you are interested in attending, contact Michaelene Urban to see if there will be a car-pool. There will be a 2015 Member Show at Becket s. The art work produced will be auctioned off and will have the theme of thinking outside the box to produce funky art. When materials are ready for the artists, there will be more guidance for the inspiration. Programs: Street artist, Andy Watkins - Cosmo Joe - was our program for September and photographer, Troy Jones will be with us for the October meeting. Troy s focus will be on artists photographing their work. Publicity: Karen Crown thanked Rosemary Eiden for the great documentation of past publicity and is in the process of contacting the several publications used to double check the fees for this year s budget. Historian: With a change in meeting location, Jill cleaned out the closet at the Senior Center. There were several older scrapbooks that will be passed into Shelley s keeping. Please send any pictures or articles to Shelley Ingala. Newsletter: We will be trying to get the newsletter out earlier so please keep in mind the best time to get your input to Elli Wollangk will be between the 15th and 24th of each month. As always, if you have an art piece accepted into a show or have received an award, a picture of the piece (sent as a jpeg.) would be great. Old Business: Art Fair: We had fantastic weather for our annual art fair which added to the overall success of the day. We only experienced one problem with an individual wanting to take pictures of a booth space that was clearly marked for no photographing. Shelley reported that only a couple of artists never picked up their registration packets. Joye commented that the potties that were
Minutes Continued & Member News Page 4 delivered did not have the promised interior sinks. Next year she will go directly to that vendor. The new recyclable trash bins worked well. We will need to put a brick or stone inside on the bottom next year when they are set out empty. Sarah reported that the Members Booth had good sales. This year s breakfast buffet for the artists was very successful and only had a couple items left. Linda reported that all the vendors have paid. The Silent Auction had 64 items displayed. Only a couple of pieces did not receive bids. The two student scholarship recipients were a tremendous help throughout the day. We were able to bring in $1426.00. The large shelter is already reserved for both Saturday and Sunday of next year. Jill Soik would like anyone wanting to be on the agenda to please contact her before the monthly meeting. Joye Moon showed us her example for her new collage class, Funky Chicken. Please bring any yard signs with wire steaks to the next meeting. If you are on Facebook, please like our OFAA page. During art break Elli shared her black work embroidery project done as a correspondence course through the Embroiderers Guild of America. A Zentangle Style Journal Cover New Business: Max and Sarah will be organizing this year s annual Holiday Dinner. Shirley Luca moved and Michaelene Urban seconded, to once again extend the invitation to join us that evening to all area art teachers. Motion carried. Shirley also shared her latest collage cards made with bits of silk ties. Meeting Adjourned September Meeting Program: Street Artist, Andy Watkins - AKA - Cosmo Joe Andy discovered his fascination with spray paint while touring in Cozumel, Mexico. He practiced his technique and used State St. in Madison as his first public venue. Using Rustoleum brand paint, he has about 6 minutes to manipulate the layers to his designs. As a child, Bob Ross was his main inspiration for art expression. From that point he built a try it, if you like it, make it work attitude for his artistic style. He use the same approach for his other business ventures of specialty furniture, custom dice and whatever else he feels he can develop to fill an empty niche. Andy believes an artist has to put the time in to better their art. He has also found it useful to contact the vendors or manufacturers of the supplies he uses. He recommends going to and participating in shows and mentioned that Art Prize in Grand Rapids, MI should be on everybody s agenda to check out.
Member Spotlight Page 5 Sharon Calkins Being an Artist is a new hat for me to wear. I am from Oshkosh. I attended school here, married and moved away. After several years of living in other areas we moved back to Oshkosh too raise our two children. We both currently work in Financial and Insurance planning. My favorite thing to do growing up was doodling. I could spend hours with crayons, paper and an eraser. Even recently while attending FVTC. I would doodle during class time. Later in life through a sad loss I inherited my mother in law s brushes and paints. She was a self-taught oil painter and enjoyed her paintings while she wintered in Florida. A few years back I had signed up for a class at the tech and it was canceled and that was the door that opened for me. I was blessed by meeting a gentleman by the name of Bob Carlson from Omro, WI. We started with oils and later moved on to pastels. I like to encourage everybody to try something. I believe sometimes in life we were told the wrong information and think to ourselves that we can t do something. So we spend years saying I can t and then one day we wake up and say maybe I can. So I encourage you to find a class of something that you have always wanted to experience and TRY IT. My goal is to show some of my art at one event this year. This is a major step for me and I look forward to the challenge. Recently I discovered the fun of watercolors. I enjoy learning and am always open to learning more and trying new things. I signed up for a class in glass and also work on acrylics at the senior center.
Page 6 Member News & Opportunities Joyce Tornow will be honored at an Art Reception with 2 other artists at the Waupaca Community Art Center on Thursday October 16, from 5-8 pm. She has art there year round. She will also be in the Winter Classic Show at the Ale House Conference Center in November. Joyce has also sold her painting of "The Young Chief " that was in the Member Show at Affinity. Ginny Jungwirth won an Honorable Mention award for an ink painting titled Under the Sea at the Fond du Lac WRAP show. From Michele Missner I had one painting, "Tomb at Miron, Israel" juried into the Waterloo Watercolor Group fall exhibit, juried by Gerald Brommer. (See the painting at www.michelemissner.com ) The exhibit will be hung October 4. Waterloo Watercolor Group's spring workshop is with artist Nicholas Simmons, a good time to get away from Wisconsin! Harvest Moon Madness Art and Craft Fair is November 1st from 8:30-3:30. It will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn on 20th St. in Oshkosh. For more information go to Altrusa s website: www.altrusaofoshkosh.org Fused Glass and Enamel Workshop Jenna Larson Each member will design a black and white drawing (or pre-printed image) which will be painted with black glass enamel onto the top surface of a clear piece of glass. We will discuss basic glass cutting processes and techniques, each member will design an accompany color pattern of glass which will become the base layer for their enamel work. The overall project will be an 8 x 8 fused and slumped platter. Date: Saturday November 15, 9 am to Noon. Where: ArtSpot in the City Center Price: $42.00 members. Non-member $58.00 Supplies are included. Continental Breakfast Included.
