SKETCHBOOK THE SOUTHERN ARIZONA WATERCOLOR GUILD www. southernazwatercolorguild.com OCT 2013 It s Showtime! It s Show Time! Beginning this month on the 15th, the FIESTA SONORA SHOW will be exhibited at the SAWG Gallery for the first time. It s always an impressive collection of work featuring the Arizona desert and wildlife. Carl Dalio, the show s juror will present awards at the reception on the 17th. The show season continues until the 5th of May, 2014. There s truly something for everyone! THE ANNUAL CALENDAR SHOW is juried by Diana Madaras and is now a Signature point. Gallery visitors will vote for the 12 paintings that will become the 2015 calendar! Always a wealth of amazing and affordable original art, the HOLIDAY 200 UNDER $100 exhibit changes almost daily with paintings flying off the walls! Last year nearly 80 pieces sold during the show. Don t miss this one! To start the new year, it s our Signature members who show their best work- truly the CREME DE LA CREME. We have a growing group of signature members. This will be an outstanding show. 2014 Equally impressive will be the juried ANNUAL SHOW in Feb. that Mark Mahaffey will jury. While in town for his workshop, he will give awards at the reception on Feb. 20th. This show concludes the point shows for this year. Completing the show year, the colorful PICTURAS CHIQUITAS at the La Pilita Museum is always a favorite reception with the junior mariachi band entertaining us while over at the SAWG gallery the ALL- MEMBER SHOW goes from early March until early April. If you re an out of the box thinker, the EXPERIMENTAL SHOW is for you. Anything goes in this show from two to three dimensional and mixed media. The final show before WOW 2014 starts, begin thinking how you have pushed your boundaries this year and be a part of the Experimental show! New! MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT A few years ago, newly retired, I decided to try my hand at golf. Being a rather nonathletic person, I knew from the start that I would have no offers from the LPGA, and becoming more than mediocre would be akin to a miracle. Thus, I made a conscious decision to better myself simply for the enjoyment of doing so, enjoyment being the key. As we begin this season of juried shows, I believe my golf attitude has a strong connection. It s very easy to get caught up in the competitive nature of entering shows, which isn t bad if it pushes you into better work as an artist. Occasionally, there may be disappointments, however, and it s how you respond that is important to your continued creativity. As a new SAWG member a few years back, I remember reading a commentary in the Sketchbook regarding the importance of keeping your chin up if you enter a show and are not chosen to be included. The article emphasized that producing art is deeply personal. Viewing art is equally individual. The juror may or may not respond to what you ve created, but the bottom line is that you should be producing art that you enjoy and you should enjoy producing your art. Whether or not you even opt to enter shows, first and foremost it is important to appreciate and enjoy your own efforts. At one of our SAWG shows, I remember speaking with the visiting workshop artist who had juried that particular show. He revealed how difficult it had been to select one piece of art over another, narrowing down the entries, and then further honing the selections for awards. His own story of having had one of his paintings rejected by one show s juror, only to have it win Best in Show in a different show, emphasized his point. It s usually one person s opinion, and it s important to keep that in mind. As we approach this season of shows and put our best efforts forth, it s ever so important to remember that regardless of the outcomes, we have had the joy of learning and creating. Disappointments may happen, but the greater gain is in the selfsatisfaction and enjoyment of being an active, productive artist. Jenny Clark Remember - To submit any articles for the Sketchbook to Debra Irons at d_irons@cox. net. Deadline is always the 15th of each month. SHOW NEWS Fiesta Sonora 2013 The first Fiesta Sonora Show in our very own gallery has been juried by Carl Dalio, and artists with accepted paintings will be notified October 1st! The Show opens Tuesday, October 15th and the Reception/ Award Ceremony is Thursday, October 17th from 5-7pm. Please mark your calendars to attend. We are very excited for this Show. If you have volunteered to assist with check-in or the reception, you will receive an email or call from us regarding any pertinent information for each of those days. Thank you for volunteering! We look forward to seeing you at the gallery on the 17th! Enter Today! 2014 2 THE SOUTHERN ARIZONA WATERCOLOR GUILD PRESENTS... October 15 - November 10, 2013 2012 Best of Show Winner Monsoon Magic by Sarah Schmerl submitted by Monica Hart and Anna Don 9th Annual Community CALENDAR SHOW Deadline for entries for the 9th Annual Community Calendar Show is Friday, October 25th. Calendar Sales The 2014 Community Calendars are getting snapped up at a good pace! The price is right (still just $10.00) and the art is gorgeous!! Any members who d like to take some on consignment, we ll have plenty at the next SAWG general meeting on October 14th. And at that time, we ll announce the prizes to be awarded for outstanding salesmanship. The offer from last year still stands first person to sell 100 Calendars will receive $100.00! To accommodate the record-keeping necessary to track sales for prizes, please, if at all possible, pick up consignment calendars at SAWG meetings rather than at the Gallery. SHOW On this month s masthead, we are recognizing Signature member Mrgaret Erath s painting, Happy Birthday. This painting was on exhibit in last year s 2013 All Members Show. NEWS LAST EXHIBIT Show - Sept 17 - Oct 13 The July WOW show started out slowly, but then Sue Rumsey reported $1758 in gallery sales alone for August (the second half of the July show.) The August show had its second half in September, and those figures will be out after this Sketchbook. The August reception, hosted by our Fearless Leader Jennifer Clark, was well-attended, and guests were treated to live music by harpist Vesna Zalusky. In August, we sold a little bit of everything -- cards, bin pieces, masks, paintings, jewelry -- and when I was there one Saturday morning, two people came in looking for gifts and bought bin pieces shortly after we opened the gallery. An editor of the Sonoran Arts Network visited the gallery during the show, so check out the link to the article on our Facebook page. The September WOW show, the last of this season, opened Tuesday, September 17, and all but one wall was filled with artwork! See next month s Sketchbook for more WOW news. We had a very successful and well-attended September WOW Artists Reception on the 20th. Thanks to Terry Bustamente for hosting, and to Judy Constantine, who was kept busy writing up sales slips! WOW - A Volunteer Opportunity! Judy Constantine will not be running the WOW shows next summer, and the guild needs someone (or two) to step forward and pick up the baton! Judy will provide all the forms and any assistance you will need along the way. It is a fun job, meeting many SAWG members who stay in town, as well as a myriad of local artists. Sue Rumsey manages the gallery and financial reports, so your part is to deal with the artists! Qualifications: knowledge of a computer spreadsheet program and a good sense of humor! WAYS TO ENJOY THE SAWG WEBSITE Read the newsletter in it s beautiful full color version up to a week before it s received by those who get it in the mail Renew your membership and pay for it on line with a credit card Register for workshops and pay on line, get your supply list and all of the artists details Find the meeting dates until May 2014, view the entire Board of Directors, and link to the Western Fed website all on the About page 3 GALLERY News PAINT, PAINT!!!!! Keep those paintbrushes wet! Holy cow, another show this season! Besides the monthly SAWG shows at the gallery, plus La Pilita, Western Fed, Aqueous, AWA Spring and Fall (busy yet?) we have a TOHONO CHUL show in the works for next April! It will be in their Entry Gallery, a small space with room for perhaps 3 dozen paintings. The details have yet to be worked out, but do keep it in the back of your mind -- what a feather in your cap to exhibit at this beloved and famous Tucson landmark. Every April we provide scholarships to high school seniors continuing their education in the arts. Last year we gave a total of $6250 to eight students. During the year money is raised in a number ways to build the scholarship fund including $1 from each member s dues, $1000 from the sales of our annual SAWG calendar, donations from members including a tribute in someone s memory, sales of the Tom Hill books that he generously donated, sales of used art magazines and the 50/50. At each general meeting we have a 50/50 drawing (hosted by Natalie Slana). Tickets are $1 or 6/$5. A few of our members have been talking with them about promoting each other through a joint event. The owners have expressed an interest in having a painting of their restaurant and patio that will hang inside the restaurant. Some of the ideas being talked about are an Italian Night possibly in November on a Sunday afternoon when it cools off where we show paintings of Italy on easels in the courtyard and they serve food and provide Italian music, or having a Plein Aire event to paint those dining on the patio, or hosting a charity benefit together. The gallery is the Guild s home and as members, we want your input. Please email or call Kathryn Greco if you have ideas or want to get involved in the planning!
