ideation 2018 Student FashionTech Competition

2 What is ideation? ideation is the premier software conference dedicated to fashion and retail professionals who rely on CAD and PLM solutions from Gerber Technology to get products to market faster, minimize costs and ensure quality. Gerber Technology s premier software experience, ideation 2018, offers two days of informative breakout sessions, panel discussions, hands-on workshops, demonstrations, strategic executive sessions, case studies and networking opportunities.

The future is now! Gerber Technology is excited to present the ideation 2018 Student FashionTech Competition. 3

FashionTech Challenge! For 2018, we continue the emphasis on combining fashion and technology, incorporating a favorite parameter from previous years: the Pantone Color of the Year! Counterclockwise from top: finalists from previous years 2015, 2016, 2017. 4

Overview Look to the future! Find your inspiration in utilizing technology to bring your design to life. Harness the power of Gerber Technology products to develop patterns, create tech packs, and visualize your goals. For ideation 2018, students pursuing a degree in Fashion are called upon to incorporate technology as the main focus of the design and development process. This can encompass a wide array of ideas and processes: tailor a suit using Kevlar, convert the human heartbeat into wearable data, transform architecture into artwear, use virtual reality design techniques to visualize concepts in 3D. Technology must be incorporated as a major component of the design/development process. Additionally, the design will incorporate the Pantone Color of the Year 2018 as part of its color scheme. Students must be currently enrolled part- or full- time in a fashion design program at an institution of higher learning and be prepared to provide official documents such as a passport or state issued ID for travel. 5

Color Guidelines Students are invited to visit Pantone to discover a wealth of options when choosing color. At a minimum, the student s design must incorporate Pantone s Color of the Year 2018, Ultra Violet. Additional colors must be based around those presented in the palettes presented on Pantone s site: Purple Haze, Kindred Spirits, Drama Queen, Intrigue, Quietude, Attitude, Desert Sunset, or Floral Fantasies. Colors not presented as part of Pantone s Tools for Designers must be approved by Gerber. Use of unauthorized colors could result in disqualification. 8

Getting started is simple! Announce your students participation no later than Friday, February 2, 2018, and have them follow a few basic steps to get started. Step 2: Pick a tech! Multiple categories will help students focus their energy toward designing a garment that combines creativity, marketability, and technology. Sustainability - Organic fabrics and dyes - Zero waste design - Upcycling - Unconventional Materials Functionality - Specialty textiles - Wearable tech Production - 3D Printing - Digital Printing - Sublimation - Laser Cutting 9

Technology Guidelines Students must follow these guidelines when incorporating technology into their designs. Previously listed categories are examples. Students are welcome to submit alternate concepts as use of technology. Technology must be presented as part of the Design Draft. Technology must be functional as incorporated into the design itself. Usage AccuMark and YuniquePLM are default parameters of the competition and therefore cannot be named as the technology component of the competition. Students should always feel welcome and be encouraged to contact us directly at edu@gerbertechnology.com with any questions they may have at any stage of the competition. 10

The design draft should be delivered directly via email to edu@gerbertechnology.com. All materials --- sketches, flats, and outline --- should be contained within a zip file or similar folder, attached directly to the email. No links to cloud based folders will be accepted.
