President s Message 2017 EXECUTIVE BOARD President Pro Tem: Jeanne Iler jeanne2@bluemarble.net Vice President Pro Tem: Lynda Frautnick lyndafrautnick@yahoo.com Treasurer: Secretary: Immediate Past President: Sandy Fisher sandyfisherfineart@yahoo.com Lynda Frautnick lyndafrautnick@yahoo.com Pat Thayer pat9brd@gmail.com Fall has arrived and this is a busy time for SCAA. Next weekend is our Gallery reception and Alzheimer s Walk. The following weekend is our 28th Art Classic with our Gala on Saturday and the Winners presentation Monday at Barnes & Noble. I would like to thank all the Board members and our faithful volunteers for making these events happen. Also in October, the Nominating Committee will be meeting to select the Executive Board for 2018. These nominees will be voted on at the November monthly meeting. Yesterday I attended the 2018 Community Services and Arts Grants. Last year, we received $10,000 for two grants. We have used this money to pay our gallery rent for half a year and bricked the garden area. Other events were the BROAD museum trip and paying for the demo artists and new equipment used at our monthly meetings. We plan to apply for another grant(s) due October 27th. We hope you will participate as the gallery is great exposure for your art and we are slowly building our business. Things have picked up each week and sales are strong. Not only is participating in the exhibits a great way to get your art seen, it s fun to attend the receptions and host during our open hours to get to know your fellow members and meet potential collectors! http://act.alz.org. for our w/the SCAA Board & Walk to Alzheimer SCV Chair Rick Ferrante! Santa Clarita, CA 91355 Pick up work: Monday, November 6th November 9th December 30th (Drop off work, Monday, November 6th, 4PM) Reception: Friday, November 17th, possible open house nights for holiday shoppers. The first step in finding your target market is usually identifying your particular interests. For most artists, this is also a simple matter. If you ve been painting for a while, just look at the paintings you ve completed. Just as you ve probably gravitated toward a specific medium, you ve also gravitated toward a subject. Pick up work: undetermined This is usually a matter of simply painting until your style emerges. You can try to manufacture a style, but it s usually better to just paint your favorite subjects in your favorite methods and let your style develop organically.

You can still help the SCAA by selling raffle ticket sales for the Art Classic. Our local restaurants are always very generous in donating gift certificates for their establishments. Last year the three raffle winners won over $200 each in gift cards! The tickets are only $5.00 each or 5 for $20! The proceeds for this raffle help the SCAA award our scholarship funds to local high school art students every year. Be sure to tell your family and friends about this great raffle and invite them to the Art Classic! It s always a wonderful event and fun is had by everyone in attendance! Attendees also have a chance to own amazing original art and other unique items from our members in our annual Silent Auction. elp Promote the SCAA! Be sure to keep up to date with all the happenings of the SCAA on our website: www.santaclaritaartists.org and on our Facebook pages at: Santa Clarita Artists Association and Santa Clarita Artists Association Gallery! If you are not already following our Facebook pages, don t forget to Like them! When the SCAA posts an article or event, sharing it to your personal page will get the word out to even more people. Remember to RSVP to events posted on the pages and feel free to invite your family and friends!

A Great Night for the SCAA at Tournament Players Club What a great month at TPC for the SCAA. Be had weekly artist demonstrations and a wonderful Art Festival weekend with a lovely reception on September 9 th! A colorful holiday boutique will be held by the Santa Clarita Artists Association, featuring its local artists along with other local vendors at the Home Care Services in Valencia on December 2-3, 2017, Saturday(10-5 P.M.) and Sunday, (10-3 P.M.). There will be Holiday musical entertainment and refreshments throughout the day! Shop for a variety of fine art, crafts, costume jewelry, collages, greeting cards, books and other gift items! SCAA member Howard Marcovitch and a crew of wonderful volunteers have been working really hard at the gallery in the month of September. If you have visited the gallery recently, you have noticed our patio walkway is fairly narrow and the space has not been utilized to it s capacity. Howard and the gang have been laying new bricks and widening the patio for a fresh look that will also help make the area safer. If you haven t seen the changes yet, we can t wait for you to see them. Thanks so much to all the volunteers who worked hard to make this happen! More photos to come next month! If you have been on the fence about showing in our gallery, please don't hesitate to join the fun! Sales can be maximized and your nominal fee of $10 can easily be recouped when you bring in a variety of items with different price points, such as gift cards, prints on paper or canvas, mini works and even more crafty items. Several of our members have been very successful showing in the gallery. Get the most from your membership! The SCAA has many great links and resources on our website at www.santaclaritaartists.org. Be sure to refer to them often so you don t miss any valuable information! The Members Information & Forms and Calendar/Events pages have all our upcoming events and the Contacts page lists Board and Committee Members. Thomas Schaller gave one of the most insightful demonstrations to lucky SCAA members and guests in attendance. He painted a beautiful scene at the pier with an adult and child flying a kite in watercolor. He discussed how perspective and a variety of values is the key to a good painting, and to not worry too much about technique. If you have good values and a good composition your painting will more than likely be successful. One thing Schaller said that stood out to many members was A value sketch is where you should do your thinking. The painting is where you do your feeling. Attendee Claudette Pfnur won one of Schaller s paintings and Cindy Angel won his DVD. Be sure to attend the winners with their winning works! with several Art Classic Welcome to Wednesday Morning Plein Aire Painting.
