Art in Public Places update 0th Anniversary Historical Committee 4 Volume 27, Issue 10 Aboriginal Dot Painting is a traditional form of art which is now r e c o g n i z e d worldwide. It has become popular as collection pieces in recent years. It is an art form that was prominent in the Northern and Western parts of Australia. When you meet the people they do not really strike you to have the intellect for the color. Yet the color is the most fascinating thing about their work. The technique is interesting but very laborious, too labor intensive for one artist and often created by many artists working on one canvas, reminding one of the American sawing bees. Ileana and Jerry took numerous art trips to explore the contemporary art scene in the US and Europe as well as the aboriginal art of Australia. They visited museums in Melbourne and Sydney and went to the Red Center of Australia to study dot painting aborigine art, in Alice Springs and Urulu. As a result of this trip Jerry W. McDaniel has scheduled to teach a course entitled: Improvisations on Aboriginal Art - Dot Painting with a Twist. In this course he combines elements from original dot painting with contemporary tools. The talk on Friday will present a brief history of Aborigine Dot Painting, styles of different regions in Australia, images of numerous examples as well as videoclips of aborigine artists at work. The symbolism as well as the color and December 2011 Ileana Costa & Jerry W. McDaniel, Aboriginal Dot Painting composition of a few paintings will be discussed, and a comparison with some European art will be made, emphasizing similarities with Seurat, Van Gogh, Klimt, Hundertwasser.
