2 2010 MAYFEST MAY 5, 2010 Variety of foods, vendors set for 29th Mayfest PILOT MOUNTAIN This year s 29th annual Mayfest in downtown Mount Airy is sure to be a hit among shoppers, eaters and those seeking musical entertainment. The festival kicks off Friday at 1:30 p.m. with the opening ceremonies, which include music by the East Surry High School Band and Pilot Mountain Middle School Chorus as well as colors presented by the high school s JROTC cadets. According to Spencer Oberle, who is organizing the vendors for the sponsoring Pilot Mountain Civic Club, there should be close to 140 booths set up selling arts, crafts and other items. I m expecting it to be a really big one, especially with the number of food people and vendors who have found there way to it, Oberle said of this year s festival. I think many people are doing (street festivals) again because it is a way of making a living, not just as a hobby or on the side anymore. If the weather holds out, I think we ll have a great turnout, and I want to encourage everyone to come out. It s an economic development thing, he said. Doug Brannon, president of the civic club, said he decided this year there needed to be much larger variety of food vendors available to those visiting Mayfest. I think if you have a food court, you should bring in different foods for people to try, because they can get hot dogs and hamburgers any day, he explained. The food area, which is found on Depot Street, will feature the ever-popular cobblers by Lovells Chapel; pizza from the East Surry cheerleaders; Mexican; Mediterranean Greek; Dusty Donights mini doughnuts; Sherr s Fun Foods with crabcakes, sandwiches and crab soup; Pacific Rim Noodles with Asian noodles and veggies; steak and cheese; Polish sausages; a Thai food vendor; ribs and chicken; corndogs; and Kim Wall Ice Cream Shop from Apex. This year s bandstand also will feature a variety of music styles. The featured band for Friday night is Donnaha Station, which will take the stage at 7 p.m. The Klassix will bring oldies rock and roll to the festival at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. On Sunday, Sugarloaf Mountain Band will bring southern gospel to the stage at 1 p.m. Ron Stephenson handled the bandstand line-up for the weekend. Shirley Cox has done an outstanding job bringing sponsors together and making it a community event, Brannon said of the festival. The streets will be open for Mayfest goers from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday; and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Set-up begins Thursday after 5 p.m., when the streets will shut down to traffic. For those visitors with children, rides will be set up in the old Folger parking lot on Main Street and tickets for rides will be sold. Linda Needham has allowed the civic club use of the parking lot for the last couple of years. Mayfest is the main fundraiser for the Pilot Mountain Civic Club, which in turn puts thousands of dollars back into area nonprofit organizations each year. MAY 5, 2010 2010 MAYFEST 3 Shope bringing one-of-a-kind pieces to Mayfest About four years ago, Karen Shope decided to learn an art that she had long been interested in stained glass art. A good friend of mine taught me to do a small piece, and I took off with it, Shope said. There are two types of stained glass work copper foil and lead came. I work in the copper foil method, which is the Tiffany method. Shope sells her work in shows across Florida and North Carolina. She and her husband have a home in Florida where they lived until he was transferred to Troutman for work. Now Shope spends part of her time in Troutman and part of her time in Florida. I do a lot of custom pieces. I did three very large panels for a wall for a lady in New Jersey, of all places, she explained. I ve done windows, hanging pieces, suncatchers, some abstract with agates, glass beads and tiles. I mix it up quite a bit, Shope said. Shope draws all of her own patterns for her pieces turtles, dragonflies, ladybugs, horses, fish. I have prices from $20 to my largest piece that is $700 with 200 pieces in it with an extreme amount of work in it, she said. I ve got a piece that is a bird of prey, my fish tank with four fish, pieces I ve done in old window frames, horse pieces. I like to have the things at shows I ve put a lot of work in it, but others too to show the uniqueness. All of her pieces include hangers and frames, except the suncatchers, which come with hangers but may not be framed. This will be Shope s first time at Mayfest. She said she first found the show during a computer search. I was reading about Pilot Mountain and it was something I thought I would be interested in. I asked around and people said it was a good little show to do, she said of her decision to come to Pilot Mountain. I want people to be able to afford something pretty and unique for Mother s Day, that s why I do some of the smaller pieces, too, said Shope, adding that no two pieces of hers are the same. I might make something similar, but I never make the same one twice. Karen Shope will be bringing her stained glass artwork to Mayfest for the first time this year. CLYDE O. FULK Karen Shope said no two pieces of her stained glass artwork are the same. Karen Shope draws all of her own patterns for her stained glass artwork done in the copper foil process. 4 2010 MAYFEST MAY 5, 2010 Coconut crafts being sold by natives of Thailand A Myrtle Beach, S.C., couple will be bringing arts and crafts from their native Thailand to share with festival goers at Mayfest this weekend. Terry Koonkhuntod and his wife, Sirilak, grew up in the Lumpang village near the coast of Thailand. Koonkhuntod explained that the people in his village make a living off of creating arts and crafts items out of coconuts. They make them and sell them to tourists in Thailand, he said. Ten years ago, Koonkhuntod came to the United States, sponsored by his aunt, to attend school. I liked it here and decided to stay. So I got a green card and then became a U.S. citizen, he said, explaining that he married his wife three years ago and she joined him in the States. I never thought I could make a living doing these (coconut crafts), Koonkhuntod said. We live near the beach here, too, and I thought it would be great to bring the art and craft here. His father, who still lives in Thailand, taught him how to make the coconut items that range in variety from animals to tree lamps to purses. His father sends Koonkhuntod the supplies and then he and his wife make the creations. Tourists (to Myrtle Beach) like to get pieces to take home with them, Koonkhuntod said. The palm trees sell the best. They are a base with the three and three light bulbs. He said typically he sells his items at festivals around Myrtle Beach, but someone told him about Mayfest and he decided to try it. I mostly do local shows, but I wanted to see if I could venture out a little bit. Since there is a festival in Myrtle Beach the weekend of Mayfest as well, Koonkhuntod said his wife will be working the Pilot Mountain show. 6 2010 MAYFEST MAY 5, 2010 Matney turns hobby into career, making beadwork jewelry Creativity is still a large part of her work, but for Nicole Matney, it is a different kind of final product. Matney was an interior and kitchen designer until about a year ago. She remains a designer, but now her focus is beaded jewelry. I m fairly new. I ve just been doing it a year, said Matney, an Abingdon, Va., resident. It is quite a different switch, but it being hands-on is great. The economy in southwest Virginia wasn t adaptable to a lot of interior design business, so I started looking into jewelry. I ve always been fascinated by it, and it was always something I d done for myself, she explained. For her pieces, Matney uses semiprecious stones and every component has sterling silver. I m doing lots of yellow and blues and spring colors, she said of the items she ll be bringing to her first Mayfest showing. I dream of pieces a lot, then get up and get in the studio and put them together to see how it turns out, Matney said. In addition to selling at shows, she offers her pieces at two boutiques in Abingdon and at farmers markets. I keep my Web site (www.nicolematneycreations.com) up to date, too, and I sell online with etsy, she said. I ve been to Pilot Mountain, but this is my first time with the festival, Matney commented. I m excited about it, and I hope there is going to be good weather. In addition to her own creations, Matney will create custom pieces for customers. It s been great, she said of her jewelry line. I m really learning so much about it and loving it. With the weekend of Mayfest always falling on Mother s Day weekend, Matney will be spending the weekend with her own mother, who will be flying up to the area from her home in Florida to help Matney sell her pieces throughout the weekend. Nicole Matney will be sharing her beadwork jewelry and other items with those attending Mayfest. 8 2010 MAYFEST MAY 5, 2010 Baker s PVC birds to take flight at Mayfest One Pine Knolls Shore resident is finding a way to fill his retirement time by making birds. Now these are no ordinary birds they are made of PVC piping. I m an older person, retired. In the past, I did a lot of work with PVC where I was around pools and other work, said James Baker. He was already traveling with his wife to craft shows where she would sell her jewelry, which incorporates fibers and her own design loop to loop. I thought I would see what I could come up with, Baker explained. It took him about four or five months during the winter time to perfect his PVC pipe birds for selling at festivals. I take a pattern and place it on 3-inch PVC, cut it out with a jigsaw and heat it where it will bend it. And every time you heat it, you have to dip it in cold water very quickly, he explained of the process. I worked with it for a while. I m in my second year. A lot was thrown away where it got too hot (during those trial months), Baker said. Baker explained he has always been around art, so it was natural for him to find some creative outlet of his own. The birds are egrets, roadrunners, woodpeckers. People display some in gardens, in their yard, on boat docks, he said. I paint them with acryllics for color. This will be the Bakers first trip to Pilot Mountain for Mayfest. We re looking forward to it. It s supposed to be warm starting this weekend, he said. mount pilot drug s James Baker s egrets, woodpeckers and more made of PVC pipe will be joining attendees at Mayfest this year.
