THE ULTIMATE MEN S HAIR GUIDE EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT HOW TO GET THICKER HAIR

EARLY INTERVENTION IS KEY TO SLOWING DOWN PERMANENT HAIR LOSS. MYTH 1: HAIR GEL MAKES HAIR LOOK THICKER FACT: A little styling gel, styling cream or texturizing pomade can help add texture to thinner hair for a natural look. But beware the 90s boy band look. Too much gel can clump hair together, separating strands and exposing bald scalp. A 14th century European hair gel recipe used lizard tallow, or lard, blended with swallow droppings. 110,000 AVERAGE NUMBER OF HAIR FOLLICLES ON THE SCALP 100 AVERAGE NUMBER OF HAIRS LOST DAILY After the fall of the Roman Empire in the 4th century, long hair was a status symbol. Royals wore their hair long while the lower classes and slaves had short hair or shaved heads. MYTH 3: AVOID SHAMPOO AT ALL COSTS FACT: The current trend is to shampoo very rarely, but it s important to keep the scalp clean from dirt and oils to create the ideal environment for hair growth. Regular scalp massages also help boost circulation, bringing blood and nutrients to hair follicles. Stick to a gentle shampoo and be sure to condition thoroughly. MYTH 2: LONGER HAIR DISGUISES HAIR LOSS FACT: A long hairstyle actually calls attention to thinning spots plus longer hair can separate, revealing bald spots. Do not be tempted by the old-man comb-over. Shorter hair actually looks thicker. So try a short modern, cropped haircut, or a haircut that is longer on top and shorter at the sides to draw attention away from a receding hairline. In 1908, New Yorkers used white castile soap or tar soap as shampoo, and the treatment for split ends was singeing and clipping. 35 million men in the U.S. have hair loss at some point 40% OF MEN HAVE NOTICEABLE HAIR LOSS BY AGE 35 19% OF MEN WHO HAVE HAIR TRANSPLANT SURGERY ARE IN THEIR 20 S

MYTH 4: ONLY YOUR GIRLFRIEND SHOULD COLOR HER HAIR FACT: Today, more men than ever are heading to salons for color treatments to cover gray or give dull hair a boost. In fact, adding natural-looking highlights gives hair depth and dimension, making it look thicker. In the mid-1800s, English chemist William Henry Perkin accidentally made the first synthetic hair dye when he was trying to create a cure for malaria. The dye was made from coal tar and it was mauve-colored. Alexander the Great required his soldiers to shave their heads and their beards before battle to stop enemies from grabbing their hair in hand-to-hand combat. MYTH 5: HAIRCUTS OR SHAVING YOUR HEAD WILL MAKE YOUR HAIR GROW BACK FASTER AND THICKER FACT: Cutting your hair does not help hair growth. Because hair is thicker at the base than at the tip, freshly cut hair will appear thicker for the first few days. Plus, if excessive sun, salt water or styling products have taken their toll on how your hair looks, getting a trim will make damaged hair look healthier and thicker. But that monthly trip to the barber has no effect on how many follicles are on your head. MYTH 6: A GOOD DIET WON T HELP MALE HAIR LOSS FACT: A healthy hair diet helps prevent hair loss and nourishes thinning hair follicles. A good hair diet includes seafood and nuts for zinc, citrus fruits and broccoli for vitamin C, and marine proteins such as fish and shellfish that have omega fatty acids. The oldest known prescription for baldness was written in 1,500 B.C. in Egypt. It was a mixture of iron oxide, red lead, onions, alabaster, honey and fat from snakes, crocodiles, hippopotamuses and lions. Men were to swallow the mixture after reciting a magical invocation to the Sun God.

MYTH 7: TOUPEES AND WIGS ARE THE ONLY SOLUTION FOR MALE HAIR LOSS FACT: You do not need to resort to hairpieces. At the first sign of thinning hair, take action to promote thicker hair. Try a complete, drug free, clinically researched hair growth supplement formulated for men. With consistent use of a nutritional supplement, you can see hair growth results in a few short months. In 3,000 B.C., the first wigs were popular among upper-class Assyrian men. The first modern toupees and hairpieces became popular in the 1930 s. In the Old Testament, one of the prophets was so embarrassed by his baldness that he rubbed his head with bear grease. And for centuries, bald men followed his lead. MYTH 8: DRUGS WILL RE-GROW HAIR FACT: Topical hair loss drugs like minoxidil do not change the number of follicles on your head. The drugs can make dormant or dead follicles sprout new hair. But you ll have to keep using the drug every day for the foreseeable future because if you stop taking it, the new hair growth will fall out again. That s why prevention is key. At the first sign of thinning at the temples, start taking a hair growth supplement to nourish thinning hair. MYTH 9: BLOW-DRYING CAUSES HAIR LOSS FACT: Blow-drying and heat-styling does damage hair, which can cause breakage and fallout. This is usually temporary so if you spot thinning due to damage, take a break from the heat tools to keep your hair looking thick and healthy. How times have changed. At Woodstock in 1969, 500,000 people spent three days in the rain and mud, with little attention to personal grooming, ushering in the era of the unkempt hippie.

In 1960, preppy style icon John F. Kennedy is elected president. His clean-cut look is often blamed for killing the custom of wearing a hat, even though men had begun to abandon the practice in the 1950s. In 2015, the man bun was the most popular men s hairstyle of the year, seen on everyone from black-tie awards show attendees to professional sports stars to regular guys. MYTH 10: OVER-USE OF STYLING PRODUCTS CAUSES HAIR LOSS FACT: Styling products applied to the outside of hair, such as gels, pomades and waxes, rarely cause hair loss. But the more you style and handle your hair, the more damage and breakage you can cause. So apply all styling products gently and limit the time at the mirror trying to get your hair just right. MYTH 11: PONYTAILS PREVENT HAIR LOSS FACT: You may think that pulling longer hair into a ponytail or man bun protects it from breakage. But any hairstyles, especially those involving a tight ponytail in a damaging rubber band, can cause breakage. If you rock a ponytail, always use a soft-covered hair band, and some days, take a break from your manly updo. MYTH 12: WEARING A HAT CAUSES HAIR LOSS FACT: Hair growth starts from inside the body. Wearing a hat or over-styling can cause hair damage but not permanent hair loss. Give your dome a break from that beanie or fedora for a day or two and your hair will have less breakage, and it will look thicker and healthier. In 2002, British footballer David Beckham inadvertently made metrosexual a household term and a significant trend with his moisturized, highlighted and nail polish-wearing style.

MYTH 13: HAIR LOSS STOPS WHEN YOU GET OLDER FACT: Once hair loss begins, it continues throughout your lifetime and never really stops. Although, the rate of hair loss does vary depending on the person. This is why it s important to take action at the first signs of thinning with preventative solutions such as hair growth vitamin supplements. In the first century B.C., Roman emperor Julius Caesar adopted a long comb-over to cover his advancing hair loss. When that didn t work, he took to wearing his iconic laurel wreath to disguise his baldness. The first successful hair transplant surgery was performed in 1939 by a Japanese dermatologist. He took hair from the patient s eyebrows, scalp and face to transplant to his bald spot. MYTH 14: COLD WEATHER MAKES HAIR GROW LONGER FACT: You might think cold weather makes the body grow hair for warmth. But in fact, hot weather seems to boost hair growth, most likely because it helps to increase blood circulation. Improved blood flow can deliver more nutrients to thinning hair follicles. MYTH 15: A HAIR TRANSPLANT IS A PERMANENT CURE FOR BALDNESS FACT: Modern hair transplant surgery, if performed well, can deliver results. But it is still not a permanent hair loss solution. The results usually last 10-15 years, and as with any surgery, there are always risks involved. In the 1920s, the heat cap was invented, heralded as the modern cure for baldness. Just 15 minutes under the cap was alleged to stimulate hair follicles. Unfortunately, the results were mixed, at best.

WHAT CAUSES MEN'S HAIR LOSS? POOR DIET If your diet lacks specific nutrients, it can affect hair growth. DHT (dihydrotestosterone) can inhibit hair growth by preventing the supply of nutrients to the hair follicle. This ultimately can lead to male hair loss. A diet rich in protein, vitamins and minerals is essential for healthy hair growth. Because the hair follicle is a nonessential tissue, it is one of the last areas of the body to receive nutritional substances. Therefore, any long-term deficiencies may lead to premature hair loss. PROTEIN Eat at least five ounces (approximately 150 grams) of protein a day. Foods high in protein are meat, chicken, fish, beans, eggs, cheese and tofu. Because hair is made of 80% to 95% protein, this is an important area of your diet. VITAMIN C Boost your Vitamin C intake by eating more citrus fruits, broccoli and strawberries. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps to absorb more iron into the blood, which in turn promotes hair growth. MINERALS Other important minerals for healthy hair functioning are zinc (found in seafood and beans), silica (found in potatoes, red and green peppers, and bean sprouts), magnesium (found in green vegetables and nuts), and essential fatty acids (such as the omega fatty acids found in fish and flax seed extract). GENETICS Male pattern baldness is caused by a hereditary sensitivity to the hormone DHT. In men with DHT sensitivity, the hormone is toxic to the hair follicles along the hairline and crown, and it affects how the hair follicles absorb vitamins, minerals and key nutrients. For men with male pattern baldness, hair follicles eventually miniaturize and the growing (anagen) phase of the hair growth cycle becomes shorter. Hair follicles near the ears and at the back of the head are less affected by DHT, which is why men usually lose the most hair on the crown of the head, and less on the sides. STRESS In the face of everyday stress, the adrenal gland produces more adrenaline, which can lead to an increase in the production of testosterone and DHT. DHT can cause male hair loss by preventing the supply of nutrients to the hair follicle. For some people, everyday stress can affect the condition of their hair and it can turn into a vicious circle: stress affects the hair cycle and the emotional impact of hair loss can cause more stress. SMOKING Smoking can affect healthy hair growth. Cigarette smoking has been shown to cause poor circulation, which can affect the amount of blood flow available to the hair follicles of the scalp. AGE In our 20s and 30s, we typically have 242 hair follicles per square inch. That number can fall to 191 follicles per square inch by the time we turn 50, and to 171 by age 80. Each hair also becomes thinner over time, thereby reducing overall hair volume. Forty percent of men will have noticeable hair loss by age 35, and that number goes up to 65% by age 60. That is why it s important to take action early at the first signs of thinning to help prevent further hair loss.
