SKETCHBOOK THE SOUTHERN ARIZONA WATERCOLOR GUILD www. southernazwatercolorguild.com SEPT 2013 Welcome Back! Don t miss... The CARL DALIO WORKSHOP! For our first workshop of this SAWG year, we are excited to welcome Carl Dalio to Tucson. He is a Signature member of NWS and AWS and has authored several Dance With the Brush inspirational painting DVDs. When you see Carl s use of vibrant, saturated color and his skill in portraying light and shadow, it s easy to understand why member, Mary Kramer raved about him in her article in last month s Sketchbook. In her words she called him a great teacher, a great painter and a very nice man. The focus of the upcoming workshop from Oct. 15th through the 18th is the use of color and composition to creatively turn your sketches and photos into a dynamic painting. There are still spaces open. More information, registration and the supply list are available on the SAWG website, www.southernazwatercolorguild.com. Sign up today and be sure to arrive early for the demo and general meeting on Monday, October 14 at 7 p.m.! 2014 Calendars Arriving Soon! The latest SAWG Community Calendar will be available at our first general meeting on September 9th. They look terrific! The 2014 calendars will still be offered at $10.00 (that s less than a dollar per month) and we re counting on members once again to help market them. Please plan to pick up consignment Calendars at SAWG general meetings. Prizes will be available for high sales and $100.00 goes to the first person to sell 100 calendars! 2014 The Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild COMMUNITY CALENDAR For more information about the Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild, please visit our website at southernazwatercolorguild.com There are some design changes this year that we think you ll like. The side column for notes has been eliminated and the date boxes are larger. We ve also clustered community events in the page margins and only typical calendar dates - and SAWG dates - are in the boxes. This means you have more room to write in your appointments. MESSAGE FROM THE New! PRESIDENT Having been in the world of education for thirty-five years, September has always been one of my favorite months. The strength of new beginnings annually created in me a sense of excitement and wonderment. There were so many new young people to learn about, so many new methods and materials awaiting introduction, so many unexpected pleasures to be unveiled. And yes, disappointments, too, lest you think I worked in a bubble. Our world of art is much the same within our Watercolor Guild. September is when we set sail on our course of enrichment and exploration. All summer we ve been readying our work for a season of exemplary show opportunities, and this year s early Fiesta Sonora is a perfect opener. Make sure you check our website for the entry details. And speaking of exemplary, we have internationally known artist, Carl Dalio, to lead the field of workshop opportunities. Carl s work embodies color creativity and makes me want to toss all the bland colors off my palette. Just imagine what effect he might have on your paintings. Workshop brochures and registration forms are available on the website and at the gallery. Don t miss this opportunity! You can t think of new beginnings without thinking of our brand new 2014 Calendar, which is in its final form and ready for publishing. It is an amazing piece of art in itself! As well, our new Membership Directory is about to be published, which happens to be the earliest date of publication in years! Within the directory is a bounty of valuable information about the Guild, along with the membership information upon which we all depend. I would surely be remiss if I didn t acknowledge that none of these September beginnings would come to be if not for the diligence of so many of our members. Throughout the summer, they eagerly prepared for the new year, meeting to revise and organize. A dozen volunteers labored over the Gallery renovations, and we re sure you ll appreciate the polished appearance. The Board of Directors and Committee Chairs spent a day together in August, ironing out details that lay the foundation for an exciting year. The discussion was vibrant. The ideas were creative. The satisfaction was enormous. And that leads me to our grand opening, the September 9th General Meeting, which I do hope you will attend if you re in the Tucson area. There will be updates on topics too numerous to mention here, but so very important to the activities within our Guild. Learn about the new ideas we have up our sleeves and how you can become part of this creative energy. September brings us all together again, to renew our friendships, to set the wheels of the Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild in motion. It s such an exciting time for us, and I look forward to getting our new year started. I ll see you in September! Jenny Clark Remember - To submit any articles for the Sketchbook to Debra Irons at d_irons@cox.net. Deadline is always the 15th of each month. SHOW NEWS Fiesta Sonora 2013 THE SOUTHERN ARIZONA WATERCOLOR GUILD PRESENTS... As announced in the July/August Sketchbook, the Fiesta Sonora, a Signature Point show with a Sonoran Desert theme, will be exhibited in our very own SAWG gallery. Since 1994, the year of its inception, this show had been held at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, chaired principally these many years by Gretchen Huff and Susan Libby. As this year s co-chairs, and with your contributed paintings, we hope to continue Gretchen s tradition of mounting an exciting show reflecting the southwest desert. You ll notice at the bottom of the entry form a plea for volunteers to assist in the intake/hanging of paintings, help at reception and at check-out. Whether you re a new hand at this, as we are, or a seasoned veteran of mounting shows, we welcome and need you. October 15 - November 10, 2013 2012 Best of Show Winner Monsoon Magic by Sarah Schmerl submitted by Monica Hart and Anna Don 9th Annual Community CALENDAR SHOW Deadline for entries for the 9th Annual Community Calendar Show is Friday, October 25th. FIESTA SONORA When you see the Entry Form that is included with this month s Sketchbook, you ll note that we re moving toward another change. Our layout expert has been working hard to standardize the calendar layout and so we re strongly recommending horizontal paintings this year as it is very likely to become a requirement starting with the 10th Anniversary Calendar Show next year. 2

This painting was on exhibit in last year s 2013 Calendar Show and will be featured in the SAWG 2014 Community Calendar. GALLERY News GALLERY REFURBISHING For three weeks during July, the gallery was closed for refurbishing. Although the work was not as extensive as last year s remodel, some nice improvements were made. Gallery Manager, Sue Rumsey did a great job gathering supplies and organizing a crew to: change the paint color in the bathroom to a beautiful, serene celadon green, add a nice mirror, paint the floors in the back room and the storage room, assemble shelving and organize the supplies in the storage room, clean out and reorganize the back room, install new track lighting above the desk and in the East Gallery (the fire department is pleased with that one) and repaint the east gallery large wall. Most recently six additional light fixtures were added to the existing tracks with new CFL Bright White bulbs to bring more light to the desk and center of the front gallery. The upfront cost of these bulbs is expensive so they are being done a few at a time. If you d like to make a donation to the fund that was begun at our Share the Light Holiday Gala last year, Sue is always happy to receive your help with this project! If you haven t stopped in the gallery lately, come in and enjoy the improvements. MARY HAYWORTH, a local watercolor artist, teacher and member of SAWG, will teach a Beginning Watercolor every Tuesday at the SAWG Gallery from 9:30-12 beginning Sept. 3rd. The classes are 4 sessions for $80 and are ongoing. If you miss one, you can make it up the next session. She is happy to accommodate nonbeginners after things get going. 3

MORE GUILD NEWS Entering the WFWS Exhibition for the First Time Finishing my painting, Red Hot and Sizzling last fall, I went to my SAWG file to get my list of upcoming gallery shows and accidentally pulled out the WFWS syllabus instead. This was an exhibition that I had never considered entering because the process seemed complicated, and I doubted that a first time entrant would stand a chance. But having the WFWS syllabus in my hand, I decided to look at it again. This time I read it carefully and discovered entering wasn t so complicated and Susan Meyer, our WFWS delegate, was there to help and answer any questions. Suddenly, I became interested. I really did believe in my painting. Could it get accepted? If not, so what? I have had rejections before. Picking up my pen, I filled out the entry form and took a chance. I m so glad I did. In February, I was notified that my picture, Red Hot and Sizzling was accepted. I couldn t go to Texas to see the show. But by looking at my catalog, I m amazed at the quality of the paintings, and I m extremely proud to have been included in this exhibition. I urge other members of SAWG who haven t entered the WFWS Exhibitions for similar reasons, to give it a try. Yes, take a chance. You might be surprised. By Elaine Pageler WFWS 2013 article I will help you, as Elaine Pageler said, every inch of the way. That is my job and we can do it. You have to take the first step and contact me. The dead line for entry foe Western Fed Show - Phoenix April 2014 is December 1, 2013. Watch for the prospectus on our web site in September. submitted by Susan Meyer Dates for WFWS next year at AWA Phoenix Dec 1, 2013 - Entries due to Susan Meyer Jan 15, 2014 - Accepted notices mailed to delegate Feb 20, 2014 - Matted paintings due to Susan Meyer Mar 17, 2014 - Notification of awards April 1, 2014 - Opening of WFWS Show in Phoenix April 30, 2014 - Show Closes May 15, 2014 - Return artwork 4

A few of our members have been talking with them about promoting each other through a joint event. The owners have expressed an interest in having a painting of their restaurant and patio that will hang inside the restaurant. Some of the ideas being talked about are an Italian Night possibly in November on a Sunday afternoon when it cools off where we show paintings of Italy on easels in the courtyard and they serve food and provide Italian music, or having a Plein Aire event to paint those dining on the patio, or hosting a charity benefit together. The gallery is the Guild s home and as members, we want your input. Please email or call Kathryn Greco if you have ideas or want to get involved in the planning!
