Toni, sent me this note and pictures from Ken Smith it seems that we all missed out the photograph from the Trundle was taken by Toni who was on one of his many little walks. Dear Toni David, John and I followed up the invitation in your last newsletter - An invitation from Goodwood -" We are having a BBQ here at Goodwood from 15:00 onwards on 14th October and wonder if you would like to come and fly here from approx. 17:00?" Sunset is 18.10, so depending on the weather the flying window might not be too big. The weather was perfect and we were able to fly along with the hot air balloons and microlights. It was a very good friendly event and a great opportunity to fly at Goodwood airfield and as a bonus to take off from the tarmac of the motor circuit. It was a shame so few CADMAC people attended. I here are a couple of photos which you might be able to use in your next newsletter. Attached is 'Lined up and ready to go - hot air balloons, microlights and model planes'. another to follow. All the best

Restricted Electric Glider Competition 2017 This year this competition was run at Thorny. The day was overcast with light cloud with wind from the SW, a good flying day. 11 pilots came but Mick Blundell and Peter Turley had problems with their model and could not fly, so that left 9 who flew, the wind was very light with a little lift. Max Battery size to be 2200 Motor could be run as long as the pilot wanted, Three rounds of 7 min, 6 min, 5 min to be flown and fourth if required. All pilots made the 7 min time in the first round except Stewart Whittle who did 6 min 50 sec. In the second round all did the 6 min except Macomb Farrington who flew Derek Honeysett s model thinking it was his, even when his model hit the deck and was destroyed. The 5 min round was achieved by the rest of the pilots with no problems. That left 6 pilots to fly a forth round. It was decided, that as most pilots had over half their battery capacity left, not to fly all up last down but to fly a 10 min max time and land, the nearest to that time the winner. This turned out to be timed into the tenth of second, to get a result. The result was, First Keith Watts Second Derek Honeysett Third Nick Gates. Thanks to all who helped time and record and all who attended and made it very enjoyable, Cheers Ray

MAKING SAW-DUST Paints and Decals (2) - The 8th article on scratch building from Bruce Smith. This is where it gets edgy. Applying the final paintwork details in the form of decals, roundels and lettering can make or spoil your model at the final hurdle. Here are a few thoughts of mine, frequently borne of bitter experience. Fine Lettering and motifs. Invariably these are going to be beyond our ability to paint by hand so if we do choose to include them (and I didn t in the Auster) we ll need to employ some form of technology to create them. Firstly we ll need to design them in some form of drawing application on the computer and then either make water-slide decals or get one of the many web-based firms to laser-cut stencils. Usually you ll be able to crib small motifs from web images and there are a lot of free military fonts sets available. Fig 1 shows some of the fine lettering detail needed for the fuselage of my P51-D. Here I took a photo of the lettering on Twilight Tear and then processed it through a photo editing app. to produce this black and white image which I used as a water-slide decal. You can get the special paper to make water-slide decals from a number of sources. They come in two forms: ink-jet printer papers; and laser printer papers though only the laser watersides will give a purely transparent transfer. You can get both types under the name of Lazertran from Squires of Bognor and Neil Macaulay tells me he s had good results with Crafty Computer Paper. Their product is called Inkjet Waterslide Decal Pack 10 A4 clear. Product code CPJ314B/CCP. Large Lettering Larger lettering and numbers will usually start on the pc with some appropriate font set which you can scale and then print your requirements in one of two ways: Either printing onto paper, cutting out the letters and using the remaining stencil to mark the model before you mask the letters with fine tape prior to painting; or Printing (or stencilling) onto a sheet of semi sticky masking sheet which can then be cut and applied directly onto your model. Fig 2 shows my positive and negative masks being cut from Tamiya' masking sheet. I wanted white lettering on the Auster so I needed to mask the Solartex before I sprayed the camouflage. The negative stencil was positioned on the airframe (Fig 3) and then light pencil lines drawn to show the position of each letter. With wet, soapy fingers the backing is removed from the positive masks and then they re carefully positioned on the airframe. It s very difficult to position correctly with your fingers so I always resort to an old trick I learned when positioning splicing tape during my time at the BBC. Using a scalpel, as seen in Fig 4 allows you to rest you knuckles on the airframe and accurately position the mask. I used the Tamiya masking sheet to mask the blank disk of the fuselage roundel and standard methods to mask the other areas of the fuselage with 1/4 inch and one inch masking tape and newspaper. Fig 5 shows the result of the camouflage spray once all the masking has been removed.

NOW - Those big roundels on the wings - or any other open structure for that matter. You ll need a BIG sheet of masking paper - so why not make one? I start off by thoroughly cleaning the underside of a cutting board and then laying down overlapping lengths of two inch masking tape. Once you ve worked out the diameters of your circles they ll cut really cleanly with an inexpensive circle cutter. (Fig 6) Once the positive mask has been positioned on the wing (Fig 7) don t forget to use you fingernail along the working edges of the overlap to ensure the paint or spray can t creep underneath. The negative part of the sheet can be stored, if necessary, on a piece of Solarfilm backing paper. Once that first mask had been used to create a blank during the camouflage spraying it won t work again once it s been removed so bin it - it s easy to make another. However it s negative is waiting there to be positioned as the outside of the roundel. Positioning will take a little care but at least you know that it is exactly the right size. You ll need to create a couple of mask circles for each roundel but it s well worth the few minutes it ll take as you boldly paint or spray between those hard masked areas and then pull way the mask to reveal beautifully sharp, circular line edges. Next month Creating Details Those little extras that make a scale model come to life. "Found at Thorney after last thermal comp on 2nd September. A Storm 4.8V 1200 NiMH, also labelled 90G.
