SOUTH VENICE YACHT CLUB YACHT YARN VOLUME XXXV ISSUE 6 June 2014 COMMODORE S COMMENTS The last Board Meeting and General Meeting were held on Tuesday May 13th. This will be our last meeting until September. Since we had very few members attend the meeting a lot of business was conducted and I would like to share the outcome with the general membership. First order of business was to reluctantly accept Vice Commodore Alan Canonico's resignation from the board and from the club. Second order of business was to appoint Gary Miller to the position of Vice Commodore and Charlie Rossi to the position of Rear Commodore. I would like to thank both Gary and Charlie for stepping up to the plate for the remainder of the calendar year. Other notable business was the Treasurer s report with a fairly healthy reserve amount of Debbie Rossi $38,000. Lastly we discussed a fundraiser to be held on Saturday November 22nd at 7pm. It is a one woman performance by Marcy Downey. The show's name is "It's My Party: The Fabulous 50's and 60's. So MARK YOUR CALENDAR for November 22nd. You will be sure to hear more about this show in the coming months. JIMMY BUFFET BBQ - Saturday June 14th ATTIRE Something like this guy! VOLUME XXXV ISSUE 6 PAGE 2 TREASURER S COMMENT S We ve had a pretty good start to this season, and we ve done better against what we had anticipated at this stage of the year, by a couple of thousand dollars. This was mostly due to much improved attendance at dinner Tony Murfin dances and increases in membership largely thanks to Debbie s and Sheri s efforts with promotion and membership, but also with a lot of support from a lot of other people. After the last couple of events at the end of May and in June, we ll go into our usual summer hibernation mode - how deeply we sleep through summer really depends on how much we shut down activities at the Club. Nevertheless, the expenses don t just stop, and although we ll cut back in a few areas, we ll still probably be running over $2,000 in standing expenses for June, July and August, with very little income. Fortunately, we ve accumulated the reserve funds that we need to get us though this regular tough period. I won t comment on any of the comings and goings from the Board, except to say that I was very sorry to see Alan leave he s a very personable guy and was a mover and shaker at the club - he ll be badly missed. All the same, we still have good energetic people who will be here keeping us going, and preparing over the summer for the Fall season while I m back in Canada. Steve Grossman and Debbie have volunteered to help me over the summer at this end so bills will still be paid and records maintained as we continue to operate financially over the summer. Something I learned during this Winter and Spring is that the people who put this Club together at its beginning set up a structure with good operating rules that have stood the test of time, that have guided us well and are still good and valid for us now. We have an open and transparent way in which the Board operates and provides information to the Membership, who in turn give us feedback and input on what and how we should be doing for the club. Of course, we d still like more participation by more members coming to General Meetings. The Good of the Club is a term we like and live with it helps us decide our options. I hope that we keep this open and friendly way that we operate for as long as the Club exists it s worked in the past, it works now and its strong, its reliable and we understand it. Beverage Department Anyone that can't get to the 'beverage' store (or forgets) at any of our events, the management of the Beverage Department is prepared to grace the request for either a bottle of red or TJ. Johnson white wine. As usual we can't charge for this provision but a donation to the Yacht club is appreciated. Not 'rot gut' either; by the way - - sampled and approved by the Beverage Department. June event (Jimmy Buffet BBQ) cookout: Beverage Department will provide an iced tub of soda and beer with the meal - - your pick. The bar, as we know it, will not be operational. Want a bottle of wine? We can still provide. Also, there will be no booze raffle or 50/50. Any questions or suggestions just give me a call? Cindy and Paul Bresse's new baby, Aiden, was born April 22, 2014. He weighed 8lbs. 12oz and was 21" long! Check out this wonderful picture of this precious little one! It's a great thing - we have members young enough to have babies!!! Have a great Summer, see you in the Fall!

VOLUME XXXV ISSUE 6 PAGE 3 FROZEN YOGURT ANYONE? This month I have decided to take a new tack. Note the nautical jargon. One of our long time members is starting a new business and I was hoping we could all support her when she opens her new frozen yogurt business. Her name is Robin Berry. Her late mother and father both served the South Venice Yacht Club as Commodore. Her husband, Alan Cole, has been Commodore twice. Then of course, most of you know Robin as our reservationist for many years. Sandra Brookshire Her new business will be in the Galleria Plaza, same plaza as Frank s Movie Theaters, located at Rt.41 and Alligator Dr. Robin tells me she hopes to be open by June 1 st, that depends on inspections. She hopes everyone will come to visit her because she will be chained there! It's frozen yogurt for everyone... Fat free, sugar free and non dairy varieties will be available. Robin wanted me to tell all of you that she misses ALL of you. Who doesn't like frozen yogurt? Stop in and and see Robin. Alan Cole & Robin Berry Marie Cofrode A Big Thanks to all our friends who were so kind and thoughtful to send me good wishes and prayers on my recent back surgery. You all did good things for me and I am on the mend, slowly but surely each day is a plus and I owe it to everyone who had good thoughts for me, my husband and wonderful care at Sarasota Memorial.; also prayers helped a whole lot! Lets keep going forward, we've got a lot of living to do! Warm thanks again to you all!
