SPRING- 2017 From the Potter s Wheel Nicole Gamble, President Happy Spring! I hope the winter treated you all well. You can thank me for the mild winter and minimal snow I bought cross country skis in January thereby ensuring that it would be an early spring. I have spent most of the winter finishing my studio/office space in the basement of our house and finally getting organized. I have gathered quite the array of art supplies over the years! I even came across a bin of unfinished sewing projects from 20 years ago!! I think I have a handle on what I have now and where it is gotta love Ikea wardrobes for organizing! The BPSA has been a beehive of activity this winter in preparation for the busy summer ahead. It seems like it s a special Anniversary for almost every organization Canada 150 th, Lion s Head 100 th, Art Show 50 th and BPSA 20 th just to name the ones we re involved with. Most of you probably read about the various projects we are coordinating for these Anniversaries in the last edition of Brushstrokes. If you are new and didn t receive the last newsletter please let me know and we ll be sure to get you a copy. Our meetings this year have been focused on these various 2017 Anniversary Celebrations! In January we met at our usual place, the Anglican Church Hall, to see the proposals for both the mural and bench projects. It was the most people I had ever seen out for a January meeting! Jim shared his idea for a lovely stone bench for the BPSA to donate to the Municipality for their 100 th Anniversary and Suzanne Dyke, Julie Heinrichs and Anita Penman brought us a wonderful idea for the mural which is now in progress at Anita s Studio. In February we met at Anita s to prime the fox cut outs. A special thank you to Joe Moffat for doing the cut outs. We understand it was a messy and time consuming project and are very grateful! It was a great turn out once again and we were able to get all the foxes primed and distributed to the Artists that had committed to creating them. For our March meeting, we met at Anita s once again (thank you Anita for offering your Studio Space for us to work on these projects!! We really appreciate it!). The mural team had the drawing all

completed and painting had already begun. Everyone grabbed a brush and you can start to see it coming together. Work on the mural will continue over the next couple of months. Watch for emails from Anita to know the studio is open and she s looking for helpers! We will also be running a series of Kid s Art Workshops the first week of July at the Rotary Hall. The plan is to host workshops on the Monday through to the Thursday and then have Friday afternoon as the Show. We ll curate the art Gallery style for their parents to come and enjoy! The municipality is funding these workshops so we will be able to offer them for free to local children as well as tourists. We have volunteers to coordinate each activity but are still looking for people who can come out to help. I believe these will be well attended so all the adult assistance that we can get will be needed! Please let me know if you are able to help out! It s been really exciting to have so many people out to meetings working together on these projects. It s shaping up to be a very fun year at the BPSA! "Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much." --Helen Keller Studio Tour Report Brenda Kerton While the August 26-27 weekend of the Studio Tour seems like a long way off, much work has already been done. Applications for the tour have now closed. We have 40 artists at 13 locations this tour! That includes two artist group sites, each housing 7-8 members! The Christmas show has swelled to 14 artists. As a result, we are relocating the show to ensure we accommodate everyone and allow for ample room for customers. It's a wonderful problem to have. Stay tuned for more details on the new location. Perhaps the best motto for the organization of this Studio Tour is that, many hands make light work. Chris Fray has been busy receiving all the applications and compiling the info so we can keep track of all that information. She is also doing the brochure design and printing this year. This year's design is quite stunning and we are not far from getting it to the printer. Terry Van Lare has been rounding up Friends of the Studio Tour to support our costs. Kim McKellar and her team have juried in a number of new tour artists. Nicole Gamble has been sharing her experience with Lydia and I who are first time Chairs of the Tour. We are still looking for volunteers-- A number of other people will soon be put to work organizing brochure distribution, signage and coordinating group locations. Please think about volunteering to distribute some brochures when the call goes out. An exciting addition to our Studio Tour advertising this year is radio ads with 102.9FM. We are sharing a number of radio spots with the Art Show and our Co-op Gallery. The 102.9FM radio station is an official sponsor of the tour and you will see that noted on the brochure. This year on the Bruce promises to be very busy. There is every expectation that tourism will higher even than last year. We believe the 2017 Studio Tour is well positioned to bring many of the Bruce visitors to the tour locations to view our art and meet with the artists.

9 th Annual Sources of Knowledge by Nicole Gamble We have been approached by the Sources of Knowledge to include a BPSA Art Exhibit in this year s annual forum. This is the 9th annual Sources of Knowledge in Tobermory and will be held from May 5th - 7th, 2017. An Art Exhibit has been included in past years with 20% of any art sales being donated to SOK. This year they have asked the BPSA to curate the exhibit and use the opportunity to promote our 20th Anniversary. This year's forum is titled "Accounting for the Past, Envisioning the Future: A Seven Generations based Framework for the Bruce Peninsula". Brenda Kerton and I have volunteered to collect the art work from Members and curate the display at the Tobermory Meeting Place. We will be collecting art work at the April BPSA Meeting on Wednesday, April 26th at 1:30 at Anita Penman's Studio. Should you be unable to bring your Art work that day please contact me to make alternate arrangements at: info@muddymamas.ca 519-793-3121 All art work must be delivered to me by Wednesday, May 3rd so I have time to inventory and create labels. If you have an easel on which to display your work please label it clearly with your name and include it with your piece. We have a limited # easels so if you wish to have your piece displayed on an easel it's best that you provide one. Please label your art work on the back with your name, contact information and price of art work. We will not have the time to hunt down this information! If you have any questions please let me know. Welcome to new BPSA members : Leonna Miller Ann Rolfe Ian Cochrane Wendy Peters Ann-Wylie Toal Patric Ryan Rick Roman Laura Banks Darryl Billy Charles Lamrock 2017 A Golden Year for the 50 th Bruce Peninsula Art Show Sue Dyment Plans are underway to celebrate this milestone year. This year we have 6 Graduates from Grey/Bruce who will each receive the Show Bursary of $600 and who will be exhibiting their first year s works done at the post- Secondary School level. As we have new members in the BPSA, I will send the Show entry form paperwork to this group as well as the Art Show mailing list.. which means you may get it twice. The committee is looking forward to another fun and successful Show, and we do hope you will enter and enjoy taking part. If you have any information or notices you would like to share via email with BPSA members, please contact Sue Dyment e-secretary. Artists Coop Report Julie Heinrichs We hope to surpass the amazing banner year we had in 2016 at the small but mighty BPSA Coop Gallery located in downtown Ferndale. The Gallery 2017 season begins at 10 am on Saturday May 20 and the open house reception takes place from 2-4 pm on Sunday May 21. Please bring your family and friends to enjoy the refreshments, food and to perhaps purchase a piece of original artwork. We have returning artists as well as a number of new artists so there will be a wide selection of different styles and mediums to choose from. Hope to see you there!

2017 is also the 20th anniversary celebration for the gallery so history will play a part this season. Stay tuned for new events we will host and participate in to continue to bring art to the community. Updated Website Brenda Kerton. It has been a few years since we did an overhaul of our website. And what better time than our 20th anniversary year! The new site strives to maintain the best of the old - clean look, easy navigation - with a new look. The new site is something we can maintain n our own and ensure we are keeping it fresh. Some of the highlights: - Our BPSA Facebook page is a dynamic link on the front page. - The events listing is very easy to keep up to date. - We have a gallery of art at the bottom of each page that will be able to update with new BPSA art. - We have new pages to highlight our 20th anniversary projects. We plan to have the new site up and running in May. Our web address will remain the same. We will send out an email to everyone when the new site is available. www.brucepeninsulaart.ca BPSA Annual General Meeting The AGM and Potluck is coming up June 28, 12:30pm at the Anglican Hall, Main St., Lions Head. No Cost. BPSA 20 th Anniversary Lin Souliere For those not here in 1997 when the BPSA was formed, here is a short history of its beginning. Betty Reinders is writing up the full history and that is to come. In winter of 1997, three local artists Aryss Branden, Lin Souliere and Rosemary Grant, met and discussed the idea of forming an art group on the peninsula. They based the name, Bruce Peninsula Society of Artists, on the group formed in Kitchener Waterloo, influenced by the Group of Seven, KW Society of Artists. Both Lin and Aryss had belonged to the KWSA. Then we placed an ad in the Tobermory Press and posters went up inviting local artists to meet at the United Church basement on a certain night. Aryss Branden took on the role as President, Lin Souliere as treasurer, and Rosemary Grant as secretary. A bank account was opened in the name BPSA to make it official. We thought it would start off fairly small. What a surprise we got! That first meeting was so well attended that it filled the hall. Lin set up a table to take names of people interested, so many not only put their names on the list but handed her the $15 membership fee, so instantly there was the BPSA with a healthy membership of local artists! The very first artist to put down her $15 and join was Mary Anne Watson, who passed away this winter. Unprepared for such a turnout, there was a video on painting a barn that was shown as nothing else had been prepared. To be honest, the three of us were so overwhelmed we didn t know what to say. A wobbly beginning for sure. The other project that the three had discussed prior to the first meeting was an Artists Coop Gallery. Aryss had talked to Jim Winegarden about renting the old general store in Barrow Bay and suddenly we had a gallery to open! So in spring of 1997, a small group of artists interested in the Coop Gallery met at the Barrow Bay General Store and cleaned and repaired and set up a gallery, and it opened that May 24 weekend. The BPSA worked out the bugs of a new group ( many people, many opinions) and met each month to share ideas, and the gallery had a good first summer in business. Today, the BPSA is such a thriving, busy and creative group with over 80 members from all over. It is amazing how far we have come. Something of which all members, past and present, should be very proud. Note: Aryss Branden passed away in 2002. Rosemary Grant moved away and lost contact with the BPSA. The Founding members of the Coop Gallery were: Stuart Burgess Mary Anne Watson Sue Dyment Lin Souliere Mark Kelner Rosemary Grant Christa Eggers Aryss Branden Monika Brauer Carl Bell
