CAREER OPPORTUNITIES FILM & TELEVISION In film and television production, the makeup artist works in tandem with a creative team, which can include hair and wardrobe specialists, to realize the creative vision and bring characters to life. Many projects, especially sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, use a combination of practical and digital effects to achieve unique and convincing design, and makeup artists who are versed in both areas are sought after. Working in film and television includes music videos, television programs, movies of the week, commercials, documentaries, major motion pictures, independent films, and reality TV. Toronto known as Hollywood North is one of the world s leading film production centres with over $2 billion worth of activity annually. PROSTHETIC & SPECIAL EFFECTS Prosthetic makeup artists employ a combination of skills including sculpting, mould making and casting in different materials, to create advanced cosmetic effects. Often the most stylized and memorable visuals in a production are the work of prosthetic artists. Individuals skilled in designing and building prosthetic appliances will find work in film, television, theatre, museums and exhibits, and with specialty manufacturing companies. PRACTICAL & DIGITAL CREATURE DESIGN Knowledge of practical and digital creature design, sculpture and visual effects are invaluable skills within a production or lab environment, where many characters are built and come to life. These characters and creatures must be detailed, convincing and unique as they are often central to the narrative of a film, TV, theatrical production or museum exhibit. These design skills - combining elements of sculpting, mechanics and construction - also open up employment opportunities within the areas of initial character concept creation, costume design, mould making, virtual reality (VR), 3D printing, and even medical prosthesis. FASHION: RUNWAY, EDITORIAL & COMMERCIAL The fashion makeup artist is an integral member of the creative team which also includes designers, stylists, art directors, photographers, editors, and choreographers. The makeup artist develops creative concepts for fashion runway events, magazine editorials and advertising. THEATRE & THE PERFORMING ARTS From a Shakespeare tragedy to a touring musical, an opera production or a ballet performance, the artist trained in stage makeup is always in demand. There are many opportunities for specialists in period and stage performance makeup for large-scale and independent theatrical productions, musicals, variety shows and more. CLIENT-BASED MAKEUP Client-based makeup is one-on-one work with an individual and is the foundation of the retail fashion industry. Employment opportunities can also be found within corporations in the area of personal grooming and corporate events. Another key area of client-based makeup is bridal and special events makeup such as holiday parties, family portraits, birthday parties, and other special events. "With the help of the fantastic instructors at CMU, I was able to develop the skills and confidence needed to begin my career in the FX world." - Sara Feehan CMU Graduate 5 6

ALUMNI SUCCESS 77% OF CMU GRADS are currently employed as Makeup Artists 84% of CMU grads speak with pride about their education & experience at CMU College CMU is highly focused on preparing students for a successful and rewarding career. We offer assistance with resumes, cover letters, portfolios, tax and professionalism advice, as well as employment support through our job posting service for graduates. A survey of over 900 CMU graduates from 2000 to 2016 indicated that 88% are currently employed full time, 77% of whom are working in the makeup industry. Upon graduation, students will join a vast network of alumni who are working around the world on critically acclaimed films, television shows, and live performances, with individual celebrity clients, or creating their own successful products and businesses. Recent work by CMU graduates can be found in: Feature Films: It, War Machine, Suicide Squad, Goon 2, The Conjuring 2, Where the Wild Things Are, Insidious, and many others. Television Series: Stranger Things, Santa Clarita Diet, Westworld, Star Trek: Discovery, American Gods, Orphan Black, American Horror Story, Hannibal, The Strain and many more! CMU graduates work also often appears in top fashion magazine editorials, on fashion show runways and in theatrical productions. 7 8

INFORMATION & POLICIES FILM & TELEVISION 29 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS High school diploma or equivalent, and a one-page essay describing why you want to attend CMU College. Additional transcripts, portfolios or interviews may also be requested. Previous experience with makeup is useful but not a prerequisite. Curriculum accommodates skill levels ranging from beginners to seasoned makeup artists. STUDENT KIT Students enrolled at CMU will be issued a student kit on their first day of class. The student kit consists of professional-grade makeup products and equipment provided at a discount to CMU students required for classroom work and assignments. The kit is also designed to serve as the foundation for the professional kit students will require for their work after graduation. STUDENT PORTFOLIO A portfolio is an essential tool to demonstrate the student s expertise to prospective employers including agents, clients, and producers. Building that portfolio with top-quality photography is a central part of the CMU curriculum, so all 6-week or longer courses include photographic shoots with a professional photographer. Professional models and actresses are provided for all the fashion photographic shoots. In the film and television, theatre, and prosthetics courses students supply their own models, usually classmates, friends, and family. In each of the 43-, 32- and 26-week programs, the instructor will book a series of photo shoots. Students will be instructed to design and visualize each photo shoot concept. Students are taught to recognize different lighting setups, and how they will affect the makeup applications. The photo shoots take place in CMU s on-campus studio or outdoors, if appropriate. Portfolios provided to students include 9x12 prints of selected, retouched images as well as digital copies of photograph series of each shoot. Photo development and enlargement costs are included in the student kit fee. ALUMNI EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES CMU provides a job posting system that alerts alumni to employment opportunities. The school s high standards of excellence are known to many employers all over the world, and we are often approached to help crew films or to build teams of artists for various events. There may include (start-up) production companies shooting a film, a music video on a budget, theatrical productions, or a fashion designer launching a career. The job posting opportunities are usually short-term/contract, and may be either paid or volunteer. They enable students to gain invaluable experience, contacts, reels, credits, portfolio shots, kit fees and referrals. Dependent on the program of study, students have access to the job posting system for up to one year after their graduation date, and deal directly with potential employers for roles of interest to them. CMU staff actively seek out opportunities, and have strong relationships with the Canadian Film Centre and other organizations. Potential employers are also invited to email prospective opportunities to jobs@cmucollege.com, which are then sent out to alumni who have registered for the service. THE FACE STATION On the street level of CMU s main campus, 110 Lombard Street, our retail store caters to the makeup artist. It offers a wide range of makeup and hair supplies including fashion and beauty products from the industry s leading brands, wig-making supplies, special effects and prosthetics equipment and products, corrective makeup, cases and organizers, etc. SCHOOL HOURS All Courses: Monday through Friday, 9:30AM to 4:30PM. NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY CMU is committed to providing equal opportunity for all, without regard to race, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, age or special needs. RULES OF CONDUCT By enrolling in a program at CMU, each student agrees to follow the school s policies and guidelines. Failure to uphold the guidelines may be grounds for dismissal from the college, at the President s discretion. Each student at CMU is expected to act honestly and responsibly and sign a code of conduct agreement on the first day of class. Courtesy and consideration towards fellow students, staff, and visitors to the college is mandatory. There is a zero tolerance policy towards cheating or plagiarism, attending the school while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or disorderly conduct which inhibits or interferes with the educational responsibility of the school. GRADING POLICY Students must achieve a minimum of 60 percent grade overall to qualify for a diploma or certificate. Grading is based on attendance, in-class work and practice sessions, project completion, photographic shoots, portfolio presentation, business cards and resume completion, hygiene of makeup kit and makeup station, reference files, participation, professionalism, demeanor, and all practical and written exams. ATTENDANCE POLICY Attendance and timekeeping is monitored. Poor attendance will ultimately affect a student s progress and final grades. Students who are unable to attend classes due to illness or family emergencies must notify Student Services at least one hour before class starting time and provide a medical note upon returning (for extended or recurrent absences). It is the student s responsibility to keep up to date with class work, assignments and tests in the event of any absence, and should consult with their teacher for assistance. DRESS POLICY Appropriate classroom dress is left to the personal discretion of the student. When students are working with clients, we ask that dress is clean and professional. In class we recommend that students bring coveralls or smocks to protect their clothes as some makeup products will stain clothing; the Prosthetics and Creature Design courses involve products such as plaster, cement, resin, rubber and urethanes; students are advised to wear old clothes or coveralls for these courses. DISCLAIMERS The school reserves the right to change the order of the curriculum in any given course as it sees fit, acting in the best interests of the students. The school reserves the right to cancel or change course starting dates and will give as much advanced notice as possible for any changes.
