HND DESIGN AND PRODUCTION OF FASHION AND TEXTILE COURSE STRUCTURE/OUTLINE: FDT 101: PATTERN TECHNOLOGY I The course aims to introduce the student to the basic knowledge and skills in taking body measurement; drafting of simple patterns, etc. FDT 103: GARMENT TECHNOLOGY I The basic knowledge on tools/equipment and skills in garment construction FDT 105: DRAWING & ILLUSTRATION I Learners should be able to: acquire basic knowledge and skills in fashion illustration techniques. Explore for visual information or data for illustration purposes. They should also be able to make simple illustrations from short text or concepts using the skills acquired. Explore the fashion figure for communication purposes so that they can make fashion statements with them. Also, learn the basic parts of the computer and their functions. FDT 106: FASHION ILLUSTRATION & COMPUTER PRESENTATION II To acquire basic skills and knowledge to creatively express their ideas using the medium of free hand and the computer in making images based on selected concepts. FDT 107: TEXTILE TECHNOLOGY I The course aims to help the student become familiar with and understand the properties of fibres, their production and the various methods of converting fibres into yarn. 1 P a g e
The students should be able to describe factors that are useful in the performance of fabrics and special processes used to apply surface designs to fabrics. The student should be able to produce dyed fabrics by using batik, tid-dye techniques and prints by using Screen, Stencil and Block Methods. FDT 109: FASHION DESIGN I The objective of the course is to acquire basic skills and knowledge to explore or research creativity and innovation and apply it in undertaking creative projects. (a) Identify the elements and principles of design. (b) Illustrate or make pictorial representations of the elements of design. (c) Organize the principles of design into designs of fashion products (d) Explore for the elements and principles of design from old clothes, magazines and newspapers and also from nature. (e) Recreate or reconstruct old clothes into new clothing items. (f) Explore the human figure for the study of proportion, figure types and figure defects. FDT 111: TEXTILE DESIGN I Choosing fabrics is a key to successful garment designing. The course is designed to address the creative and innovative activities of the student towards the designing of fabrics to register ideas on paper and then searching for the appropriate materials, which would be used by the production unit in either printing or dyeing of fabrics. Students will also set up sample design accurately interpreting and representing ideas on paper. Students will have to create two-dimensional designs that can be produced in a design repeat for the production of artistic fabrics or textile products. FDT 113: COMMUNICATION SKILLS The objectives of this course it to equip trainees with the necessary basic skills and knowledge in communication to be able to present their products to their clients and also undertake good negotiations. 2 P a g e
FDT 117: COMPUTER SKILLS I To provide students with requisite knowledge and competence in the use of Computer / Desktop Computer (Macbook/Apple Computers) FDT 119: FASHION AND TEXTILES HISTORY The course aims at providing a contextual background to fashion design and textiles. Students would acquire the necessary knowledge on indigenous Ghanaian and African designs in fashion products exploring for cultural and social aspects of fashion design and textiles and their effect on garments, hats and other accessories through their historical development. Inspirations would be drawn from the past (drawing on (Fashion and Textile materials and their sources). Also, students should study samples of clothing items of some communities and very important personalities (chiefs, politicians, priests and musicians). Investigate the importance of clothing items in history of Ghana and Africa. SECOND SEMESTER FDT 102: PATTERN TECHNOLOGY II The course aims at equipping students with the basic knowledge and skills in adapting simple garment patterns for bodices/blouses. FDT 104: GARMENT TECHNOLOGY II The course aims at equipping students with basic knowledge and skills in garment construction. FDT 106: FASHION ILLUSTRATION AND PRESENTATION II The objective of the course is to acquire basic skills and knowledge to creatively express their ideas using the medium of free hand and the computer making images based on selected concepts. Thus deepen the exploration for elements and the principles of Fashion Design and illustration; Learn to draw the human figure proportionately; Present design ideas and creativity. The course aims to help the students to understand the fabric structure, concept and production methods of woven fabrics. It is also designed to address the basic principle and characteristic of weaving, distinguishing between warp and weft, the primary motions of the loom-shedding, picking and beat up and also comparing and contrasting plain, twill, satin, brocade, damask, honeycomb weaves etc. FDT 110: FASHION DESIGN II The objective of this course is to apply knowledge and skills acquired in the previous sessions to investigate or research indigenous deign of clothes. Explore and research creativity and innovation and apply knowledge and skills to produce creative products. DFT 112: TEXTILE DESIGN The course is designed to address the creative and innovative activities of the student towards the designing of fabrics to register ideas on paper, which would be used by the production unit for constructing woven fabrics. Students will also set up sample design accurately interpreting and representing ideas on paper. Students will have to create two-dimensional designs that can be produced in a design repeat for the production of artistic fabrics or textile products. FDT 114: FASHION ACCESSORIES TECHNOLOGY I The course aims to provide a contextual background to Fashion accessories. It covers learning about basic and specialist tools and how to use them for various methods of producing headgear, bags, jewellery, etc. FDT 116: COMPUTER PRESENTATION SKILLS II Students should acquire basic knowledge and skills in operating the computer. Also, basic skills in the use of soft wares like Word, Photoshop and Power Point in presentation of data collected and stored anywhere. FDT 118: PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT I 4 P a g e

And, also acquire the basic knowledge and skills required to manage a clothing industry. FDT 120: INDUSTRIAL ATTACHMENT I (IN-HOUSE) The course aims to provide a hands-on experience or practical skills to enhance what has been imparted to students in the classroom. YEAR TWO SEMESTER 1 FDT 201: PATTERN TECHNOLOGY III The course aims at equipping students with the knowledge and skills in producing patterns for lingerie and pants, elaborate necklines and armholes. The course is also aimed at equipping students with knowledge and skills in draping designs on the dress stand. FDT 203: GARMENT TECHNOLOGY III The course aims at equipping students with knowledge and skills in handling special and underlying fabrics, and the construction of lingerie and pants. FDT 205: FASHION ILLUSTRATION AND PRESENTATION III (COMPUTERS SKILLS) Learners should be able to use the computer as a drawing tool to supplement the hand. Illustrate with visual images the stories and data collected in the Umbrella Assignment during the research period. Also use the computer for presenting Fashion illustration Projects and design works undertaken. FDT 209: FASHION DESIGN III The objective of the course is to prepare the students for the umbrella assignment in the second year in which they have to research into Fashion Design Projects. Thus, able to design questionnaires for collecting the relevant creative data, which will be, analyzed? These data could be used to Design for garment production. Also, perform complex tasks using a combination of soft wares, photo shop, and power point in drawing, designing and presentation of data collected and processed into new silhouettes (the use of CAD in fashion studies). DESIGN SPECIALIZATION SEMESTER ONE FDT 309: FASHION DESIGN IV The course aims at equipping students with knowledge and skills in Fashion Design: Clothing and accessories. Students should be able to undertake their own research and develop themes and concepts for Fashion Collection for specific seasons and clients. FDT 339: FASHION DESIGN ACCESSORIES TECHNOLOGY III The course equips students with the advanced knowledge skill and of producing fashion accessories like hats and bags. Produce fashion accessories and intensive decoration. FASHION DESIGN OPTION: CLOTHING AND FASHION ACCESSORIES. FDT 305: FASHION ILLUSTRATION IV The objective of the course is to acquire basic skills and knowledge to creatively express ideas using the medium of free hand and the computer making images based on selected concepts. 1. FDT 339: FASHION ACCESSORIES DESIGN III To provide students with requisite knowledge and competence in the use of Apple computer and use the Mac or any other computer software to design and present garment and accessories design. TEXTILE DESIGN AND PRODUCTION OPTION FDT 307: DYEING: DESIGN AND PRODUCTION The course is aimed at equipping students with the knowledge in the use of the various dyes; understand the method of application of dyes. The student should be able to transfer designs unto a fabric by using various dyeing and design techniques. FDT 313: PRINTING: DESIGN AND PRODUCTION Students will be introduced to the printing methods. Describe the broad types of fabric printing and should be able to differentiate among the various printing methods. FDT 333: WEAVING AND KNITTING The course will address weaving, knitting and other fabric construction processes. Student will be able to differentiate between the construction methods. Experiment by using yarn types and colours. Student will be able to provide diagrams of the basic weaves, knits and non-woven using various fabric construction methods. 9 P a g e
YEAR 3: SEMESTER 2 SPECIALIZATION: FDT 302: COLLECTION BOOK, EXHIBITION AND FASHION SHOW (COMMON TO ALL) Students are able to complete or finalize their research for the design for the requisite Collection of a set or a range of 4 clothes with the necessary accessories for exhibition. Do design specifications to meet professional standards. Also be able to organize and present course work professionally in a graduation exhibition. Provide the students with sound skills and knowledge to be able to perform creditably in producing a Collection of design of garment and the necessary accessories to be presented in a graduation exhibition. Perform complex tasks using a combination of soft wares like Word, Photoshop and Power Point in Presentation of data collected and processed. (The use of CAD in Fashion studies) SPECIALIZATION: FASHION DESIGN OPTION: CLOTHING AND FASHION ACCESSORIES FDT 310: GRADUATION PROJECT: DESIGN AND PRESENT A FASHION COLLECTION (A collection of four set of garments and their accessories). Students are able to complete their collection designs with all the accompanying accessories. These designs are drawn with all the technical details for easy interpretation for the pattern making and free hand construction. TEXTILE DESIGN AND PRODUCTION OPTION FDT 312: DESIGN AND PRODUCTION Students are able to complete assorted designs and use them to produce finished printed fabrics and woven/knitted fabrics. The finished fabrics are professionally presented for appreciation and evaluation. FASHION PRODUCTION OPTION FDT 306: GRADUATION PROJECT GARMENT/ACCESSORIES: The course aims at assisting students to use different and appropriate techniques to produce text copies of their project garments and produce the final collections with the necessary matching accessories for exhibition and fashion show. 11 P a g e
