PICNIC 2018: GREAT PARTY! Submitted by President Carol Laurn This year s July 14 catered picnic was hosted by Peg McKeown, hostess extraordinaire, at her beautiful home on the Thornapple River. She welcomed us into her home and had everything planned for the comfort of our members. If rumor is true, Peg felt she had to clean her studio in preparation for our visit. I m glad I had this tidbit of information prior to seeing her studio, because at this moment, my studio is a mess. We relaxed in beautiful surroundings, enjoyed talking with our friends until Peg announced it was time to eat. The catered buffet included chicken, potato salad, baked beans, and pork barbeque sandwiches. I was full... more than full...and couldn t eat another bite. Then, I made the mistake of looking at the desert table. What epicurean delights were contributed by our members! One bite of their pie, cake, or any baked goodie is an inducement in and of itself to join our membership. The comraderie within our group of artists is so special. We hope everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. (More photos inside.) Sign up to help out at our ArtPrize 2018 Venue Many hands needed to staff our venue before and during ArtPrize. Here s an easy link you can use to sign up: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c054eaea72babff2-gvaartprize. Thank you so much, all!

ArtPrize Venue Cleaning We re gathering on Thursday, August 2nd from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the very latest to begin the process of cleaning up our very cool ArtPrize Venue at 1101 N. Monroe, 1/2 block south of Leonard Street on Monroe. I encourage all of our artists who are in ArtPrize to help, plus you get to see where your entry will be hung. We can use help from all of our members as well. We will need: Pliers (to pull out a multitude of nails) Spatulas to spackle the nail holes A few mops Pails A few brooms and dust pans Rags to wash windows and anything else we can wash One tall ladder Toilet cleaning brush A few paint rollers and pans Wear old clothes. We'll bring in pizza, soft drinks and water for lunch or you can bring your own. Abstraction to Reality Workshop open to all painting media When: July 28, August 4, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Where: LowellArts, 223 W Main St, Lowell, MI 49331 Instructor: Larry Blovits Workshop Fee: $160 ($150 for LowellArts Members) lorain@lowellartsmi.org 616-897-8545 This workshop, open to all levels, is designed to encourage the student to take artistic license with subject matter and explore abstract relationships in the beginning stages before committing to the specific descriptions or imagery. With this approach, various aspects of design and composition are clarified and worked out to strengthen the underlying foundation. Solving basic problems in the beginning stages makes the final abstraction or traditional image stronger. This workshop is designed for the artist to respond to subject matter creatively, intuitively, and boldly. The standard accepted procedure is to simply copy nature or photographs without intellectual input or decision making.the idea behind this workshop is to get the artist to use, push and explore the color, design, and drawing possibilities available for picture-making. Manipulation of the basic fundamentals should free you up to pursue creative freedom of expression without duplication restrictions. You will never paint the same! Saturday, August 4, 2018, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Learn more at their website: www.lakeodessaarts.com Aubade - acrylic by Larry Blovits

Needing and Searching for a Chairperson for the Reeds Lake Art Festival 2020 Submitted by Carol Laurn Bob Kraai has been taking responsibility for organizing The Reeds Lake Art Festival for the past 4 years. The proceeds derived from this event greatly help pay for the organization s expenses as well as additional GVA activities and equipment. Not having Reeds Lake Art Festival would hamper the progress we have seen at GVA. Bob s research of other shows and planning have contributed to the festival as our main funding resource. Bob will be responsible for 2019 Reeds Lake Art Festival, after which time he will step down as Reeds Lake Chairperson. Bob stated he would be willing to train one or more persons willing to share the 2019 chairmanship, which will make the transition into this position much easier. You will learn the procedures which have proven to be successful as well as have the opportunity to bring new ideas/information into the festival organization. The chairmanship does not require rocket science. It does require a person or persons who have a strong and vested interest in our organization, understand the important role that GVA plays in our members lives, and know that volunteering for something bigger than one s own personal vested interests adds richness to the fabric of our art organization. Please contact Bob Kraai to volunteer for this position. Thank you, Carol Laurn P.S. Contact Bob at 616-956-7734 or rkraai@ameritech.net Alix Bartnick Drawing Chosen Allendale Township solicited drawings from township residents and hired a local artist to upsize the drawings to create the mural on the north wall of the restroom building. Over eighty people signed up to help paint it. Our own Alix Bartnick s drawing was chosen to be included in the mural. The local True Value Hardware store donated the paint. Rogue River Artists Association hopes you can join them on September 8, 2018. Learn more at www.rogueriverartists.org If I could say it in words there would be no reason to paint. Edward Hopper

We Had a Special Guest! Mary-Ann Perry, the only woman founder of GVA, stopped in on June 25 to draw with us at Portrait Sketch. Such an elegant woman and a delight to have in the studio. She loves our new digs, by the way! August in the Gallery Submitted by Jim Johnson SUMMERTIME is our theme for August. I m thinking about the kind of art that we will look at in January with the snow piling up outside, and remember how wonderful summer can be. All 2D and 3D art is eligible, including drawings, paintings, prints, sculpture, photography, digital works, mixed media, etc. This exhibit is not juried and the works do not have to be framed, only hangable. 2D art must have a wire in back. ( No entries will be accepted beyond the hang date.) Hang: July 30 / Monday Strike: Sept 1 / Saturday Creativity takes courage. Henri Matisse They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself. Andy Warhol August Program Night The August Program on the 9th will feature a movie. The Collector explores the 46-year career of Allan Stone, the famed New York City gallery owner and art collector. Producer and director Olympia Stone reveals her father s compulsive collecting genius while telling the parallel story of his lifelong journey through the art world from the 1950s to 2006. Viewers are taken on an extraordinary path inside one man s obsessive submersion in art and its influence on the artists, art dealers and family members with whom he worked and lived. Show Your Art at Trinity During the month of August, Wayne Pierce, Gene Sampson, Jan Arbogast and John Jakobson s work will be on display in the community room at Trinity United Methodist Church, located at 1100 Lake Drive SE. We are currently seeking artists willing to share their work during the months of September. Artists will set prices (or NFS) that will be included with artist s name and title of each work, and you will receive 85% of the sale price, with the remaining 15% going to the church. If you would like to show your work at Trinity, please contact Mary Marin at marymarin1285@gmail.com. Finally, if you would like to assist with the organization of this endeavor, please let Mary know! Thanks! COME TO THE NEXT ART CHAT Come join us for fascinating topical discussions on and about our changing art scene locally, nationally, and beyond. Your ideas are important and welcome in this informal and comfortable setting. We plan to meet Friday August 3rd at 1 p.m. in the GVA library. We look forward to seeing and hearing you there!

Contact Bonnie Kolarik: 231-392-2226 Photo Group Submitted by Randy Nyhof The Photo Group met for their regular meeting on July 5 with their usual critique and Wayne Pierce showed some of the Photo Books he had printed. I also showed some Metal Prints and Canvas Wraps produced for me by a company out of Florida. For a second meeting in July the GVA Photo Group will have its annual picnic at Mary Harbert s place on Lake Michigan by West Olive on July 28. Our next meeting is scheduled for August 7. One of my photos was accepted in the Muskegon Art Museum s 90th Regional Exhibition. The reception is on August 30th at 5:30 pm. Linda Scarborough also had a photo accepted in the show. There are probably more GVA artists in the show of which I do not know. Gene Sampson has been collecting data on which shows GVA artists are involved in. In other news I just signed an agreement for some of my images to be produced on products sold in the Hobby Lobby Stores. So later this year you may see some of my images on products in your local stores.

ArtPrize 2018 Submitted by Steve Scarborough From looking at the ArtPrize website, GVA is going to have a very diverse and interesting show. This year we re going to be exhibiting some very large pieces, as well as several small works of art. We will have socially conscious pieces as well as artwork that shows the beauty around us. ArtPrize runs from September 19th to October 7th. I know that seems like a long way off, but we have much work to do to prepare! Dennis O Mara s piece caught my eye. It allows those viewing it to add their story to his piece made up of reclaimed doors. Evie Carrier has a piece inspired by creation and the beauty of nature. In her words, From the depths of the Utah canyons to the wonders of the Swiss Alps, without man s help or permission, God s magnificent smile carved itself into the universe. Randy Nyhof has a photo triptych which depicts the decay and death of the small farm, something that hits home in Michigan, because of all its family farms. It s pretty common to see a farm that s in extreme disrepair, even farms that have been in the same family for a hundred years or more. Linda Scarborough s piece brings awareness to the Opioid Crisis in the United States. Being a therapist, she sees how pain medications can be used for good or bad. Her photographs show people from all walks of life wearing T-shirts with statements of what she hears at work and from her friends and family experiences as well. Their cries for help, their cries of frustration, and their cries of daily pain will touch your heart, I m sure. DeLaine Klar s artwork is called Fresh Produce inspired by her years of purchasing food for her church s food pantry. Thanks to Feeding America West Michigan, many families who would otherwise go without food have food on their table. DeLaine s family owned a produce market, and she s a vegetarian, both of which give her a special perspective on this subject. Joanne Swann has two interesting pieces that invite commentary. Together they are called Nonpartisan Rants ; separately they are entitled Pink Tsunami and Targets. Both works will get you talking! These artists are only a sampling of the many types, visions and issues tackled during this upcoming ArtPrize, at our venue, the Water Treatment Plant at 1101 N. Monroe NW. Main floor only. We are installing extra walls to take full advantage of the available room in this space. It will also be cleaned and re-painted. We want every visitor to be impressed with GVA and all we do for Grand Rapids. Look for the volunteer signup sheets being circulated at GVA and available on our website to help make this very important event a huge success!
