& NEWSLETTER Hawaii Stitchery.. Fibre Arts Guild Glamour D Garbo Earrings or Pendant By professional beading teacher Carrie Johnson Take a step back in time to the glamorous Art Deco period of old Hollywood; picture yourself as a movie star or performing on Broadway in a costume put together by non other than Erte. Glamour epitomized beauty, extravagance, and the new streamlined look of the 1920s and 1930s; make your own earrings reminiscent of this Golden Age using Swarovski crystals and Swarovski crystal pearls. One of Carrie s most popular designs and classes is the Glamour D Garbo Earrings. Five different colorways will be available: antique pink as shown, grey/black, teal/rose-gold, brown, and blue/purple. The kit fee will be $40 and includes all beads, findings, a small bead mat, needles, FireLine and instructions and features Swarovski crystals and pearls with sterling silver or goldfilled findings; everything you will need to make a pair of earrings, or two pendants. To help cut costs, participants can buy one kit and split it between 2 people, which would bring the cost down to $20 if they can find a partner to share with. Alternatively, each person could by a different color, make one pendant, then trade the remainder of the kits, that would give each person 2 different colored pendants. She will take credit/debit cards, which may be helpful. Participants should bring the following: Beading/task lamp, readers or magnifying glasses if needed. Tools will be available to use in class, but if you have your own, please bring the following: round nose pliers, chain nose pliers and wire cutters. aloha Aileen s Message HSFAG President, Aileen Kaneshiro For those that missed the February meeting, you missed a most intriguing movie that gave us an insider s glimpse into all the work that goes into planning a superlative fashion exhibit and the accompanying opening night banquet, the Met Ball. It takes an entire year, lots of mileage and research, and thousands of flowers to make such a successful event. Thank you, Joy Nagaue, for sharing The First Monday in May with us. March brings us a change of pace and focus. Carrie Johnson has successfully taught the d Garbo earring class at national beading conventions and we are privileged to have her offer to teach this mini workshop with the reduced kit price of $40--$20 if you share the cost with someone else and make two pendants instead of a set of earrings. You should have received an earlier announcement about the April meeting which will be a field trip to the HCC annual student fashion show. The deadline to reserve your ticket is March 31, not February 28. Lots more time to find a guest driver if you need one. $35 is a great price for heavy pupus and a show. Most fashion shows run double the price. Joy Nagaue says it isn t a fundraiser for the school; the fee just covers expenses. The Guild s good fortune continues! We have Linda Lee s workshop and the pillow challenge coming up sooner than you think. At the February meeting, in walked Joanne Heim with a donation of very beautiful upholstery fabric! Such serendipity! The fabric will be available again at the March meeting. You don t have to use it to create a Kabuki jacket or pillow but you could Bead Sale! Thanks to those who had purchased Jennie Asato Tsue s donated beads at the January/February meetings. More will be on sale in March. We have the best bead deals in town and beads you can no longer purchase elsewhere. The beads will be sold at 50% off and all proceeds will go to the Orpha Herrick Memorial Scholarship Fund. If interested in purchasing beads, please don t forget to bring cash or your checkbook as there will be no holds. PAGE 2
