May 2018 MCMURRAY ART LINES TO Next General PROVIDE Meeting: AND May 10, 2018 STIMULATE FOCUS ON 7:00 PM THE ARTS www.mcmurrayartleague.com Moscow, Red Square 1916 Wassily Kandinsky - Oil on Canvas PRESIDENT S NOTES Now I sound like a broken record: the weather was so spring-like last weekend, so the snow in late April was a big surprise (see the April newsletter). It s crazy to see cherry blossoms on the trees today when it s snowing can t tell if the white flakes are snow or flower petals. I don t know about you, but I m REALLY, REALLY ready for winter to be over, and the real colors to come out, inspiring plein air painting! I ve learned so much in the classes I ve taken in the past year, and particularly inspired by the CAFE s taught by MAL members-- wonderful crafts that I hadn t tried before. I m now working on a needle felt portrait of my Mom, thanks to a wonderful CAFÉ workshop by member Darlene Sanders. Please consider becoming an involved member of the McMurray Art League! Share a special craft or artistic DVD for a CAFE, show up at an Open Studio, or help with a committee: bringing snacks to a meeting or facilitating an exhibit. MAL is such a vibrant art league. I m so glad you can take advantage of all it has to offer you in your pursuit of artistic and creative expression we love your input to help make this an even better art league to help members grow in/find their creative muses. Hope to see you at a class, CAFÉ, or Open Studio soon Keeping the arts alive, Anne NOTICE If you have information you want to share with MAL members, please submit your article to our President, Anne Trimble with a copy to the newsletter coordinator, Paul Rebholz at p.rebholz@live.com. Please turn in your info by Thursday (or Friday if you choose) after the Board Meeting to be printed in the next newsletter. P a g e 1 8

NEXT GENERAL MEETING, Thursday, May 10, 2018 at 7:00 PM Remember the next meeting is in the evening! After a short business meeting at 7:00, our presenter will be Sandy Conley. Sandy was so moved by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra s performance of J.S. Bach s Chaconne, she committed to visually interpreting this glorious piece of music. The result is BACH BEREAVED, a series of 64 related mixed-media paintings depicting the emotion and poignancy expressed by Bach in the Chaconne. A 20-minute video was created which pairs a beautiful violin solo rendition of Bach s Chaconne with Conley s 64 paintings. BACH BEREAVED blends and celebrates the multiple artistic disciplines of assemblage painting, music, video and historical story-telling in one substantial project. Conley uses materials in a unique way to present an assemblage work of art that invites viewers to an up-close inspection. And with the help of talented videographer Dan McKosky and gifted violinist Ellen Chen Livingston, bold images and sublime music seldom heard outside of the concert hall are combined in the unique video presentation. While Bach s Chaconne is widely known and appreciated among classical musicians, Conley s goal through BACH BEREAVED is to tell the Bach story and to broaden the Chaconne s audience and appeal. Sandy is excited to present BACH BEREAVED for the first time in a public setting on May 10th. The original art will be on exhibit, Sandy will describe her process, and show the 20-minute video, BACH BEREAVED. SPRING LUNCHEON Theresa Bozzo has scheduled a McMurray Art League Spring Luncheon for Thursday May 17, 2018, at 12:30 PM. It will be held at Pizzaz Italian Restaurant, 250 Washington Road, McMurray, PA. 15317 (across from Simmon's Market). Cost is $18.00 per person for a lovely buffet. Deadline to sign up is May 13, 2018. Please send checks made out to McMurray Art League to: Theresa Bozzo, 109 Green Commons Drive, Pgh. PA 15243 LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING YOU! Since this show is not juried, the standards committee will review your work at the time of hanging. Please make sure your art meets the standards, and is ready to hang. We will not have a Galleria Kiosk to use for this show, and are currently considering other options. If you have any suggestions, please let me know, erosie5@aol.com. More specific details will be available in August. As always we will need volunteers to make this show a success, please consider helping in any way you can. Show chairs are Betty Roseborough and Julianne Eisel. Important Show dates are: Registration Postmark cut-off Friday Sept. 21 Screen Setup HELP ONLY Thursday Oct. 4 from 9 to 11 PM Drop off work Hang Work Friday Oct. 5 from 7 to 9 AM Reception Saturday Oct. 6 from 7 to 8:30 PM People s Choice Voting Cut-off Thursday Oct. 11 at 8 PM Show Takedown Sunday Oct. 14, 5 6 PM Betty Roseborough and Julianne Eisel. OPEN STUDIO Open Studio continues to be Fridays from 10 AM to 2 PM, so, I ve been thinking...yeah, yeah, I know it s an oddity. It s about Open Studio, the summer months, and bringing a little adventure into our painting experience. For instance, what about a field trip or two? Nothing fancy or requiring a credit card, but perhaps a trip to the gazebo in South Park to paint the cattails, or a sweet garden somewhere...how about the Pittsburgh Botanical Gardens? I ve never been. Canonsburg Lake? Think about it and let us know... Also, what about a photo exchange? We all have camera phones and email addresses. Why not choose a few pic's of unusual places that others may never get to see. We can pull them up on someone s ipad and do a little trading...or is that concept too personal? Think about it. Four Open Studio days in May...all good. Be there or be square! Can t wait to see you all again! Phone 412-835-1124 or 412-860-9049 or email at klvituccio@gmail.com. Karen Vituccio MCMURRAY ART LEAGUE SCHOLARSHIP The 2018 Bunky Mosites Memorial Senior Scholarship application has been posted to the art league website.
