It covers product knowledge required in the role of a beauty consultant as well as the principles of preparing for a make up demonstration. The unit will explore the techniques for identifying customer needs as well as the factors which determine whether cosmetics can be applied to a customer. UV20373_v2

11 Unit content This section provides guidance on the recommended knowledge and skills required to enable you to achieve each of the learning outcomes in this unit. Your tutor/assessor will ensure you have the opportunity to cover all of the unit content. Outcome 1: Understand customers requirements for cosmetics for different purposes and occasions Types of make-up products: Concealer cream, stick, medicated and liquids. Foundation cream, liquid, gel, cake/ impact, medicated and mousse. Face powder loose and pressed. Contouring cosmetics blushers, highlighters and shaders. Eye cosmetics eye shadow (powders, creams, gels and pencils), eye shimmer, eye-liner (cake, liquid, pencils and kohl), mascara (cake and liquid), eyelash primer and eyebrow pencils. Lip cosmetics lipstick, lip gloss, lip balm and conditioner, lip stain, lip pencil, lipstick sealer, lip primer. Consultation techniques: Develop rapport, questioning, active listening and observation, answer customer questions, determine client suitability, establish customer needs, requirements and benefits sought, visual analysis of skin type, contra indication checks. Outcome 2: Understand the factors to take into account when deciding whether to apply cosmetics to a customer Factors to be taken into account when deciding whether cosmetics can be applied: Allergic reactions and sensitivity testing, illness and infections, customer preferences. Legal considerations: Health and Safety at Work, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health, Supply of Goods and Services, Reporting of injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations, Data Protection, codes of practice, organisational procedures. Situations where the beauty consultant may need to suggest that the customer seeks medical advice: Contra-indications, allergic reactions, poor health, skin conditions and disorders. UV

12 Outcome 3: Understand the importance of product knowledge to the beauty consultant s role Importance of product knowledge: Knowledge of product range, features, ingredients, suitability and benefits, increase customer confidence, loyalty and repeat business, individual and store reputation, enhanced mystery shopper reports and consumer reviews, prevent allergic reactions and dissatisfied customers, customer satisfaction. Importance of understanding laws governing cosmetics: Protect self, colleagues and customers, provide a safe and hygienic environment, avoid prosecution, reduce risks and hazards, ensure legal compliance. Outcome 4: Know the techniques used to demonstrate cosmetics Preparation of self: Professional image and presentation, punctual, polite, sensitive and supportive, effective use of body language, product knowledge, appearance and personal hygiene, body freshness, removal of jewellery, clean hands and nails (clean and short), correctly fitting and appropriate footwear, oral hygiene, hair care (clean, smart and off the face), light application of make-up, integrity and honesty. Preparation of customer: Client comfort and correct positioning for treatment, all jewellery removed, removal of restrictive clothing, securing the hair off the face, removal of contact lenses, record card completed, full consultation undertaken, signed, written informed consent, agreeing the service and outcomes, patch testing. Preparation of area: Disinfect trolleys and surfaces, clean chairs and stools, environmental conditions (i.e. ventilation, heating, lighting and music), products, tools and equipment are correctly stored/ positioned and accessible, waste lined bin, check any electrical equipment, couch covered with towels, client record card and make-up chart. Purpose of tools: Correctly used for efficiency and professional results, maintain health and safety and hygiene, reduce risk of cross infection, easier application and better coverage, reduce product wastage. Techniques used to apply cosmetics: Skin care cleanse tone and moisturise. Concealer build up several layers for desired effect, apply with fingers, dry/damp sponge or brush, removal of excess. Contouring cosmetics slow build up of colour; different techniques for powder, cream and liquid blushers. Face powder matt for daytime and iridescent shimmer for evening, apply with cotton wool, velour sponge or velour powder puff; finish with downward strokes, removal of excess powder. 10 UV20373

13 Outcome 4: Know the techniques used to demonstrate cosmetics (continued) Eye shadow different techniques for powder, cream and liquid, lift skin to keep eye tissue taut, apply wish sponge, brush or finger, darker shadow to socket area, blend evenly to avoid harsh lines. Corrective eye make-up different techniques for dark circles, wide-set eyes, close-set eyes, round eyes, prominent eyes, overhanging lids, deep-set eye, downward-slanting eyes, small eyes, narrow eyes and oriental eyes. Lip make-up different techniques for thick lips, thicker upper or lower lip, thin lips, small mouth, uneven lips and lines around the mouth, apply with lipstick, lip liners, crayons and sealant. UV
