2 Clear Skin Starts NOW! Written by: Jeffrey Sassmannshausen, MD I am uncomfortable with the increased numbers of medical professionals who feel compelled to offer treatments beyond the scope of their training. More physicians not trained in the skin, and dentists, are offering facial injectable treatments such as Botox and Juvéderm or Restylane. I am even more disturbed by the numbers of patients who schedule with these unqualified people, often because of a discount. It can be tempting to look for specials and deals at the local salon or Groupon. I am often asked, How do other places offer Botox so cheap? Like many things, you often get what you pay for... One of the reasons some places can do that is that they use inappropriate dilutions, or purchase the product from discount suppliers where you may not even get an authentic product. At Three Rivers Dermatology & Windy Ridge Skin Care Centre, we are committed to providing safe, advanced, expert, and cutting edge facial and hand rejuvenation. There are no shortcuts. We do a lot of filler and Botox injections at our office, and I ve consulted with hundreds of patients over the years. The most frequent fear I hear from patients is the concern of looking frozen or blown up, conjuring images of The Real Housewives TV series, Goldie Hawn in The First Wives Club, or various other Hollywood celebrities who have too much work done. That s the last thing I want to do. If you look at friends, co-workers and celebrities, you may be able to pick out this overdone look around the mid-cheek, central face, and lips. Don t even get me started on overdone lips! Our approach is to make you look like you did 10 years ago, not plastic. You should look rested and fresh, not like the cat woman or have duck lips. We don t want you to go to your next reunion and have someone say Yikes, you ve had a lot of work done!

3 My typical patients are working men and women who are teachers, professionals, business owners, etc. who simply want to look their best at whatever age they happen to be. The goal of non-invasive cosmetic treatments is to make you look 5-10 years younger, so you look rested and refreshed, not different. We should celebrate each stage of life, and getting a little help from filler and Botox injections along the way is ok. It s something nice we can do for ourselves to help us look as good as we feel. I bet if you were to walk around our office, you wouldn t be able to tell which of our team members have had injectables and who have not. In fact, I get Botox treatments every 3 months. When I first consult with a guest about what is needed for full correction, I try to assess the whole picture. I evaluate the overall sun damage. I look at the skin of the face, neck and décolleté (chest). Is there pigmentation? Is there loss of collagen or elastic tissue? Where are the wrinkles, and how much volume, or underlying support, is gone? The hands-- do they support the look of the face or do they look much older? I also find out what the guest is most concerned about. We can then start discussing a treatment plan which will best allow them to reach their desired best results. When coming up with a plan to revitalize the face and hands, I want to develop a program which will repair, enhance, and protect the skin. Most importantly, this should include a home care regimen; the products will enhance any treatments and protect your investment. You only have one face, so take care of it. You don t take your car to just anyone to fix, but to a mechanic who is trained and trusted. 8 Sweet & Fruity Prep/Total Time: 30 minutes Yield: 10 servings Salad Ingredients: 2/3 cup fresh orange juice 1/3 cup fresh lemon juice 1/3 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon grated orange zest 1/2 teaspoon grated lemon zest 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup cranberries NUTRITION INFORMATION Recipe found on tasteofhome.com Delicious fresh fruit makes the perfect dessert for backyard barbecues, pool parties or any other occasion. There will be no leftovers when you bring this delectable sweet and juicy fruit salad to your next summer event. 2 cups cubed fresh papaya 2 cups blackberries 3 kiwi fruit, peeled and sliced 3 bananas, peeled and sliced 2 cups cantaloupe melon balls 1 cup seedless grapes 1/2 empty watermelon shell Directions: STEP 1 Bring orange juice, lemon juice, brown sugar, orange zest and lemon zest to a gentle boil in a saucepan on medium-high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for about 5 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Set aside to cool. STEP 2 Cut 3/4 inch slice off bottom of watermelon shell so it remains steady on any flat surface. Gently arrange mixed fruit inside empty shell. Drizzle cooled sauce evenly over fruit. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour. Garnish with fresh mint leaves just before serving if desired. ENJOY! Yield: 10 servings Per Serving: 155 calories
