4 1 MASCARA Is your favourite mascara destroying your lashes? We know, we know. We heard that collective gasp. But hear us out - we re not saying mascara in general is bad. Who hasn t slapped on a few coats of their fave mascara before a night out? It s an essential in pretty much every beauty routine. But for those who use mascara every single day (and let s be honest, that s an awful lot of us!), daily wear can wreak havoc on lashes. This is especially true if you re using a chemical-laden mascara with ingredients such as harsh dyes, fragrance or preservatives that are known irritants, such as propyl paraben or phenoxyethanol. Petroleum-based mascaras are also a no-go, since petroleum is known for slowing down lash growth and causing allergic reactions. As an alternative, you could choose an organic mascara, but even without the chemicals, applying coats of mascara and rubbing the area to remove it can cause wear and tear. Vigorous rubbing can cause your precious lashes to fall out, so be careful. Skip the waterproof formula - the agents used to make waterproof mascara water defiant are extremely drying to the lashes, which can cause breakage and lash loss. Who wants that? The best and healthiest solution is to perfect your own lashes. If your natural eyelashes are long, strong, full and flawless, who needs mascara? Keep reading to find out more about how you can take your lashes to new heights without mascara. Again, we re not suggesting your ditch your mascara permanently, but what if your lashes were so beautiful that mascara could be a once-in-a-blue-moon type of thing, for extra oomph on special occasions? If you absolutely can t part with your beloved daily mascara routine, make sure you re applying it gently, and not rushing through the application. 5 2 HEATED LASH CURLERS Heated eyelash curlers?! Why you should avoid them We love a good, curled lash as much as anyone. Perfectly curled lashes are like the icing on a delicious cake; a great finishing touch. Eyelash curlers are essential beauty tools that can work wonders for your eyes by opening them up and making them appear larger and more awake. There are countless lash curlers on the market, and they range in price from affordable to outrageous. You can get blinged out curlers, basic curlers, even HEATED lash curlers! But hold on a minute there.heat? In the eye area?! Is that really safe? While most heated lash curlers don t get hot enough to actually cause a burn, it stands to reason that any heat applied to hair on a regular basis will begin to dry the hair out. So just like your straightening or curling iron can cause damage to the hair on your head by frying out the natural moisture, thus drying the hair follicle, heated eyelash curlers can do the same thing over time. Dried out, damaged hair is much slower to grow, so when you apply that school of thought to eyelashes, the conclusion is the same; prolonged use of heated lash curlers can dry out and damage your lashes, which can cause lash loss and stunted growth. We recommend sticking with a conventional, non-heated curler to be on the safe side. Always curl your lashes BEFORE applying mascara, as mascara creates a thickness that makes lashes more susceptible to being pulled out with the curler. For optimum results with a lash curler, it s always best if you start out with long, strong lashes. 6 3 FALSE LASHES / ADHESIVE Find out how false lashes can destroy your real ones Ah, falsies. By far the most popular and affordable form of lash enhancements next to mascara, beauty lovers worldwide have been using falsies since 1916 to fake long, thick, lashes in a myriad of styles - from flirty to natural to all-out drama. As long as you re careful, occasional use of false eyelashes can be a fun and gorgeous way to get your lash on, but daily use is NOT the best thing for your precious lashes. The main culprit for damage isn t actually the false lash itself, but the glue that bonds falsies to the fragile eye area. False lashes need to be pulled off, and regardless of how slowly and gently you attempt to do this, the glue naturally resists the pull, and that tension can take some of your real lashes right along with the falsies. In addition to this, the chemicals used in most lash adhesives can be brutal for your lashes - formaldehyde, sodium dodecylbenzenesulfanate, and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfanate are common ingredients found in false eyelash adhesive and these are not only known toxins and irritants, but they are also very harsh and drying, which spells bad news for the health of your lashes. We suggest skipping the daily falsie application and getting your real lashes on point instead! Castor oil is widely used for a variety of purposes, from cleansing the skin to inducing labour to acting as an effective laxative. Many use castor oil on the skin for its moisturizing properties. And while some people find it to be just fine on their faces, those who already have dry skin tend to find that castor oil actually dries the skin out more, rather than offering a moisturizing effect. Castor oil is highly absorbent, which means it is very speedily absorbed into the skin. This can be a good thing, because it removed dirt and impurities, but it can also remove the good oils in your skin, stripping them away and leaving dryness in its wake. You can t afford to drain moisture out of the delicate eye area, so if you re planning to try the trend of using castor oil to promote lash growth, it might be best to think again. Aside from the fact that it can dry out the area you apply it to (and if that area is around your lashes, well, we already know that dryness leads to damage and breakage), there is absolutely no real evidence to back the claim that castor oil helps lashes grow. Unlike nettle extract or kelp extract, for example, both of which have proven thickening and growth stimulating properties, there s nothing specific about castor oil that points to lash growth. What s more, many have reported allergic reactions to castor oil, such as rashes, hives, redness, itchiness and general discomfort and irritation after using castor oil around the delicate eye area.
