The Bible refers to Rahab, the prostitute, who helped the servants of God nd shelter from persecution. Its long history has done little to make it an acceptable practice in some spheres, with some calling it an immoral, evil deed. Let s hear the story of a prostitute, calling herself Nolwandle Makhubo, who has been in the profession in Standerton for almost three years now. She remembers the day it began. My parents passed away after a car accident when I was just 17 years old, leaving me and my two brothers, aged 5 and 8, in a two-room-shack, Nolwandle said. Like most family members, my uncles and aunts promised to take care of us. We felt like a nuisance when their promises amounted to nothing. Being the oldest, she resorted to begging from neighbours and friends just so they would not go to sleep on an empty stomach. They too must have been at their wits end, feeding us daily. She returned from school one day and saw her ve-year-old brother eating from the neighbour s rubbish bin. From that day on, Nolwandle struggled to focus in school. Yes, we ate at school, but I would bring a lunchbox to put the food in to take home for my brothers. One Friday afternoon my friend asked me if I wanted money. She gave a resounding yes and her friend fetched her about 7pm. She shrivelled with fear, looking at that old man, who resembled her father, calling her baby. That was when my friend nally let the cat out of the bag as to what they were supposed to do. I bluntly said no to a suggestion that seemed absurd in its entirety. Her friend however, said that when you sleep with a boyfriend, you get nothing, but at that busy intersection, you could make money. The friend offered her a cold beer and a few puffs of weed. As the night went, the absurdity of selling herself seemed less and less vile. We left the bar and went back to the intersection where a much younger man ordered my body like sh and chips. The somewhat intoxicated man asked her to get into his car and they drove off to the River Park. After the deed, he paid me R50. I have been a magosha now for nearly three years and contrary to what people say, I am looking for a job to leave this life. Every time she goes to work, she is well aware of the dangers it poses. I was once beaten by a customer who refused to pay, he swore at me, calling me all sorts of names. I wanted to go to the police, but what was I going to say, I m a prostitute who got beaten up? Sometimes you nd these repulsive drunk old men, but as long as they pay, you go along. Her customers vary from businessmen to politicians, homeless guys, alcoholics and the list goes on. She remembered a day when a taxi pulled up with eight men inside. After they agreed on a price of R50 a round, they took turns while the others stood by and waited, with me asking for a few minutes break in between. On a good night, they can make about R500 plus, more if it s payday. Some days however, you walk away empty-handed. Nolwandle does not wish this life on anyone, calling it degrading. At times the girls ght among themselves for customers and if you have many, they would accuse you of stealing their customers. I am currently attending classes at college in the hope of a better future. One day I will own my own house, drive my own car and be a woman I can respect. 3 29 June 2018 Standerton Advertiser Nonto off to Sweden THANK YOU STANDERTONIANS COMMUNITY 3 Meyerville s very own girl, a FCB-designer in Johannesburg, has been selected to study for a Masters in Graphic Design in Sweden. Ms Nonto Tshabalala is one of 10 people in South Africa from a total of applicants globally. The former Hoërskool Standerton learner has a BA Honours in Communication Design (Graphic Design) from the University of Johannesburg (UJ). She is the only child of Ms Thandiwe Tshabalala. I was raised by a phenomenal grandmother whose wisdom runs in my blood, Nonto said. She taught me to ght for what I want, always to do my best and to live a life of breaking records. Ms Tshabalala attended Standerton Primary School and became the rst black head girl in She then enrolled at Hoërskool Standerton, played for the rst hockey team and was part of the disciplinary committee in her matric year, I love breaking records, she smiled. She was one of three students to be selected for a student exchange programme at the Dominican State University of California in 2015 and the rst to create a documentary, giving students of colour a platform to speak about experiences at UJ. Ms Tshabalala also presented the best exhibition in her honours year. FCB Joburg alongside Shannon Koor selected her to represent the company at a Minds Wide Open conference at Michigan State University in the USA last year. I am passionate about children and how their identity is formed. I realised this after my little nephew, Ncu, asked me why his skin was a certain colour. It brought her to tears. How could a seven-year-old look at himself and not like who he was? Blaming herself for the situation, she applied for four master courses in her eld respectively at the University of Gothenburg and the Loughborough University of London. Ms Tshabalala was accepted for three of the four and Loughborough University quickly responded by offering her an Excellence Scholarship. She was awarded a Sweden Institute Study Scholarship (SISS) on 26 April and on her birthday, 17 May, the Ambassador of Sweden, Ms Cecilia Julin, invited her to the Royal Swedish Residence in Pretoria for a study in Sweden predeparture and alumni reception. She met some of the other scholarship holders as well as international representatives from universities such as the University of Gothenburg, Karlstad, Lud, Malmö, Umeå, Uppsala and University West. What a way to celebrate a birthday, she exclaimed. I think it then sunk in that it actually was a big deal. She called her mother, family members and friends the next day to tell them about her birthday and how proud she was of herself. University begins on 3 September and she should be leaving in mid-august. This versatile woman clearly does not hesitate to tackle designing challenges headon. Ms Noelle Sivalingum (volunteer: SPCA), Ms Alida Lake (Standerton Advertiser), Mr Thabiso Mkhize ( eld manager: SPCA) and Ms Marina Schoombee (Standerton Advertiser) on 20 June. Fluffy made sure to be in the photo as well. Community contributes warmly to the plight of Standerton SPCA The Standerton community willingly contributed dog and cat food towards the Standerton Advertiser project for the local SPCA in Factory Street in the industrial area. People are encouraged to still place their donations in the trolleys for that purpose at Pick n Pay and SuperSpar. Those who have already made a difference, are warmly thanked. The Standerton Advertiser delivered a 248kg-load on 20 June where the eld manager, Mr Thabiso Mkhize and volunteer, Ms Noelle Sivalingum, helped to of oad the cargo. Mr Mkhize mentioned residents who dump animals before the gate and even tie them to the gate, apparently unwilling to ll in an admission form, and in a hurry to leave because of a possible donation asked. The SPCA does not enforce any donations whatsoever. There is an emergency number on the notice board at the gate, he said. I won t refuse. Ms Sivalingum strongly believes that people should be held accountable for their attitude towards animals. We need stronger legislation, she said. The SPCA in Standerton currently houses seven dogs and no feline friends use the accommodation presently. With the food donated, one dog can be fed for 22 months and seven animals will have enough food for three months. Before departing, the curious two of Fluffy and Ben made sure the newspaper was not too nosy and their in-house cat closely watched the donated food on offer in the storeroom. According to the Perdekop Police, Mr Jacob Gregory was reported missing by his son, Theo, at 3am the same day. My father had just returned from a farmers day and left without saying where he was off to, Mr Gregory said. When he did not return home, we got worried and tried his cell phone numerous times, but it went unanswered. The police received a report at 7am about a car that had overturned, investigated and found the body. According to police, the body was discovered underneath his bakkie. A case of culpable homicide was opened with the Perdekop Police. Dick Kerslake, n boer van die omgewing, wat die belange van boere op die hart gedra het. Die eerste dag is in September 1995 op die plaas Oudehoutspruit gehou. Mnr. Kerslake het beoog dat boere op hoogte gebring word van die nuutste plaastoerusting en demonstrasies kon sien in toestande wat hul eie weerspieël. Hy het in gesprek met die Val Boerevereniging getree en met behulp van verskeie ondernemings en plaaslike boere, is die Val Boeredag verwesenlik. Val-gemeenskap, onder leiding van die komitee, het geen moeite ontsien om die terrein nog te verbeter nie en dit is vanjaar die 23ste bestaansjaar van die inisiatief. Sowat 120 uitstallers staan vanjaar vir n onvergeetlike, goedbeplande ondervinding gereed en die Waterval Boerevereniging het die uitstallers en borge vir die deurlopende ondersteuning bedank. Introduced in 1934, this bolt-resistant variety now comprises a number of variations. Lucullus, another variety sold in this country, has a lighter green colour and a rather narrow stem that s the same colour as the leaf. Lucullus, however, is more susceptible to bolting than Fordhook Giant. Years ago, when I began farming, there was basically only one type of Fordhook Giant. Gradually, we began to nd that some imports had a lighter leaf colour, fewer leaf indentations and a thinner stem, which began to become more green than white. Nowadays, in some cases, the leaves are quite smooth and bear little resemblance to the original type. While the new varieties were emerging, I visited a farmer who still grew the original strain. I remarked on this and he said he kept the source of the seed a secret. He was getting a higher yield and demand was greater, so his spinach was fetching a better price. A short while later, when he went to buy seed from his secret source, he found that the company s Fordhook Giant variety had changed. Many still say the original variety, with its dark green leaves and contrasting white stem, was more attractive. But the pronounced leaf indentations tended to collect dust. This made cleaning them for market a bigger, more labour-intensive job. Do it yourself with all the variations currently available, there is scope to develop any number of different characteristics. If you re a large producer, select a plant or two with characteristics ideal for your purposes, and transplant them before winter. The plants will be ready to harvest in December. Repeat this process and, after about six years, you should have a new variety of your very own design. A word of caution: from the second generation onward, choose plants that are slower to seed or you will unwittingly develop a strain susceptible to bolting. Remove early-bolting plants before owering and only harvest seed from plants with the desired qualities that bolt late. Much of our Swiss chard seed is imported, and some companies ask producers overseas if they have surpluses that can be bought at bargain prices. (In some cases, a South African-produced seed lot will be imported back into the country!) As each producer is likely to have his own variant of the variety, you may get different results when using a batch of surplus seed from the same overseas company. If you are a large Swiss chard producer, it s wise to try selections from various companies, establishing from them where the seed originated. JD Link offers boundless features and bene ts - even the most basic data relayed would consist of equipment-speci c metrics such as diesel levels, engine temperature and forward speed. Second, and probably most exciting, is the ef ciency data that becomes available such as hectares completed, average hectares per hour, hitch position and wheel slip. Equipment can even be geo-fenced and time-restricted to alert owners of unauthorised usage. A third feature is that JD Link acts as a gateway for data to ow to and from machines. Machine critical updates can be carried out over an internet connection or via screen-sharing en to allow technicians access to in-cab screens via an internet link, and fault codes can be sent to the owner, operator or the dealer as they occur. What is exciting is that we are now enabling machines and equipment to communicate with one another, Mr Prinsloo also said. This will allow for example, machines to adapt guidance tracks to accommodate different working widths of implements. He commented that while this may sound like a sci- movie script, it is in fact agriculture in the 21st century, where extracting ef ciency down to the smallest aspect counts. AFGRI Equipment has always seen value in investing in precision agriculture. We believe that these technologies enable our producers to make better and more informed decisions by having the correct, available information when they need it. The second should be to ask him or her what you can do to help your horse in the meantime. Most emergencies fall into the following categories: wounds that need stitching or are bleeding severely, injuries and fractures, colic, and foaling. A good knowledge of bandaging is essential for treating injuries, knocks and sprains to the lower legs. The Manual of Horsemanship, by the British Horse Society and Pony Club, is an excellent guide in this respect. Bleeding If your horse is bleeding severely, put sugar or honey on the wound to help the blood clot, then cover it with a large absorbent pad such as a disposable nappy. Bandage this in place if the wound is on the neck, face or limb, ensuring that the bandage is not too tight. Never use a tourniquet, as this can interrupt the circulation, leading to permanent damage if left for more than 10 minutes. Keep the horse quiet and continue putting pads on the wound if the blood soaks through. A gaping wound If this needs stitching, it should not be allowed to dry out. Do not treat it with sticky ointments or purple spray (wound aerosol), as these can make it dif cult to stitch up successfully. Instead, wash the wound with a saline solution (dissolve one teaspoon of table salt in 250m of boiled and cooled or bottled water). Then wet swabs or a clean cloth (not cotton wool as it sticks to the wound) in the solution and drape these over the wound to keep it moist. Sprains and strains For sprains and strains, rub horse liniment gently into the legs or over large muscles. Fractures and shock In the case of a fracture, keep the horse still and apply a thick support bandage with cotton wool. If the horse is in shock, after a bad fall, for example, dose it with one to two cups of sugar solution, made by mixing three teaspoons of sugar per 250m of water. Cattle do well outdoors under widely differing weather conditions and you can allow them access to an open-air pole shelter. In an enclosed building, proper ventilation is important for maintaining good health. Design the infrastructure to make your job easy and safe, thereby minimising expense, time and labour. Effective working facilities include a crush pen, a neck clamp and a squeeze chute. The crush pen and neck clamp are used for vaccination, deworming, branding and close examination. The pens and squeeze chute con ne animals that need to be handled and driven into the crush pen or neck clamp. Well-designed handling facilities reduce animal confusion and stress. Examining cattle for ticks. Using the correct facilities enables a farmer to handle cattle more easily, carry out examinations and procedures more thoroughly, and reduce stress. Photo: High stress may lead to poor performance, affecting meat quality. For this reason, never use an electric cattle prod! Store fodder out of the sun. Maintaining feed quality is crucial. Store feed, including hay, straw, silage and grain, in a dry, well-ventilated building free of rodents. Forage exposed to direct sunlight loses nutritional value. Wet hay loses value and palatability and becomes a safety and health hazard due to the possibility of combustion and mould development. Correct and safe transportation is a must in every cattle operation. A 750kg or 1t truck and trailer are convenient for a small beef operation, and can also be used to transport and disperse hay. Jan Tonkin spog met vloot John Deere-trekkers Oom Jan Tonkin is n ou bekende in dié geweste en spog met n vloot van 32 John Deere-veteraantrekkers waarvan 13 in sy museum pronk. So met n glimlag het hy vertel hoe hy aan sy eerste trekker gekom het. Dit het begin met n vriend, wat vandag al dood is, waarvan hy die transaksie nooit vergeet het nie. Sy naam was Ben van Deventer en die man het van kuier daar by die Toristo Hotel in die 90-er jare gehou. Ben het die dag by hom opgedaag en gesê: Jan my ou maat, en wou met n ompad eintlik net geld leen. So paar dae na oom Jan nee gesê het, het hy weer op die plaas opgedaag. Jan, my ou maat, was sy eerste woorde. Ben het oom Jan omgepraat, hoewel daar n voorwaarde was en dit is hoe oom Jan die trekker gekry het. Oom Jan en Hannes Odendaal het vroeg 2000 besluit om die trekker te restoureer. Dit is waar dié restourasiegogga gebyt het. het oom Jan laat blyk. Die tweede trekker wat aangekoop is, was n John Deere 730 en die derde n 1934 John Deere D, wat die eerste John Deere-trekker was wat met rubberwiele vervaardig is. Laasgenoemde het van Beaufort-Wes afgekom en aan n dominee behoort. Elke veteraantrekkerversamelaar se doel is om die big ve te hê. In dié geval is dit die John Deere 830, 820, 80, R en 730. Oom Jan se versameling sluit almal in. Volgens hom, is dit seldsaam om al vyf in een versameling te hê. Hy is lid van die Hoëveldstreek Veteraan Trekkerklub. n 720-trekker is aangekoop waaraan hy baie sentimentele waarde heg. Oom Jan het n prys in 1980 gewen tydens n lootjietrekking waar 14 boere landwyd eers Duitsland en daarna Amerika toe gegaan het. Hy het vir Charl Theron tydens die reis ontmoet en hulle het baie goeie vriende geword. Toe oom Jan hoor dat Charl oorlede is, het oom Jan die trekker aangekoop wat Charl op sy plaas gebruik het. Die 720-trekker ploeg steeds soms op die veteraanploegdae op Val. Dit is nou bygesê as daar tyd is, het oom Jan gesê. Almal wil altyd weet waar die trekker vandaan kom. Ek vertel vir hulle hierdie lang storie Sy naam was Ben van Deventer en die man het van kuier daar by die Toristo Hotel in die 90-er jare gehou van Waterloo in Iowa, waar n John Deeretrekker en enjinmuseum is. Dié trekker en die 70- model is 100% soos uit die fabriek. Tans is daar drie trekkers wat gerestoureer word. Die museum, waar die ou trekkers nou hulle laaste tuiste gevind het, was vroeër eers die melkstal. Daar is 400 koeie gevoer en gemelk. Op die vraag of daar aanbouings gaan wees as die spasie te klein raak, het oom Jan net gelag en gesê: Almal vra my. Oom Jan se pa, Delarey en oupa Wessel, het die eerste John Deere-trekker in 1928 aangeskaf en n soortgelyke een word tans gerestoureer. As n trekker nie al die komponente het nie, word dit nie as n veteraantrekker geklassi seer nie. Die rede waarom oom Jan nie van uitstallings hou nie is daarin geleë. Komponente kry voete en dan moet dit weer ingevoer word. Alle trekkermodelle se onderdele en komponente is beskikbaar, maar moet ingevoer word. This is especially true of spacing, where many factors have to be considered. In South Africa, most pumpkin varieties are either typical runners or compact runners. The latter requires closer spacing than the varieties that produce long runners. In some countries, bush-type varieties are available. The leaf area of these is not large enough to produce more than one or two fruits; for a better yield, the plants must be spaced very close together. Ultimately, however, the type is less important than the size of fruit and the yield, or the number of fruit per hectare. Seed is expensive, so space the plants further apart if you can still obtain a good yield. The old Boer pumpkin is a strong runner that begins producing fruiting owers only when the runners are quite long. The maximum yield is only about 25t/ ha however, whereas modern grey-skinned varieties have a substantially higher yield potential. Spacing is all important, because when the pumpkins join up between the rows, they begin aborting fruit, a remnant of a primitive survival trait. The plant s main objective is to produce seed for the next generation; your eating pleasure is of little consequence. The plant, therefore, tends to strike a balance between the amount of fruit it sets and the leaf area it requires to support the fruit to seed maturity. Different varieties abort fruit at different times, but all obey the same principle: the plant will not set more fruit than can reach maturity. Moreover, it is often conservative in this regard, so spacing really is important. Cool weather: Other factors also play a role. A lower average temperature results in the distance between the internodes of the vines being shortened and causes the rst female fruit to be set closer to the crown. This means that more fruit will be set on the vines before the rows meet in the middle. Row spacing can therefore vary within one variety depending on the time of the year being planted. Shorter day-length, often coupled with cooler weather, will also cause fruit to be set closer to the crown. Finally, conditions in the land can in uence spacing in an unexpected way. When open space is lled, pumpkins begin to abort new fruit. Photo: Bill Kerr Good management and high fertility will produce more vigorous vine growth, causing the vines to meet in the middle and begin aborting fruit. For this reason, ironically, yield may be higher where there has been neglect or poorer fertility! For a good yield: This doesn t mean that you should not strive for ideal conditions. It just means that when growing conditions are good, you should space the rows further apart. Put another way, for a good yield, the fruit population should be set before the entire area is covered. Pieterse was triumphant with 38 points in the A-division, followed by Ronald Kinnear, also with 38 points, and Aldo Arnaldi with 35 points. Wessel van der Merwe took rst place in the B-division with 40 points, Attie Mouton was second with 38 points and Deon Grimsell third with 37 points. In the C-division Daan Naudé was victorious with 41 points, second was Nic Momberg with 33 points and third Desmond Visser with 30 points. Patrizia Lombard was rst in the women s division with 33 points, with Julene Willemse and Clara Smit following with 31 and 20 points respectively. The competition comprised of 35 players in total. 23 29 June 2018 Standerton Advertiser SPORT 23 Die D0/14-hokkiespan het hulle mammas vir n wedstryd uitgedaag. Mammas kroek sonder om te blik of te bloos Die mammas het op 18 Junie die D0/14-hokkiespan van Hoërskool Standerton die stryd aangesê en moes die knie met 0-2 buig. Aanvanklik was die mammas tydens die spanpraatjie van hulle vermoëns oortuig en vol moed en spoed. Nadat die uitjie geblaas het, is besef hierdie is n perd van n ander kleur en dat die hokkiebokkies hulle spel ken. Met selfs vyf ekstra spelers op die veld en n skeidsregter wat duidelik aan die mammas se kant was, kon die kinders steeds met n oorwinning spog. Ester Ernst het die baan in die eerste minuut verlaat na sy n spierbesering opgedoen het, maar Jeria Ambulansdienste was gelukkig daar om aandag aan die beseerdes te gee. Alida Lake het die hokkiebal met n sokkerbal verwar en haar voet beseer na sy die bal probeer skop het, gevolg deur n duikslag wat tot skaterlag in albei kampe gelei het. Besoekers het die hoop van n volgende wedstryd uitgespreek, terwyl sekere mammas laat hoor het dat die datum, hoewel nog nie bepaal, hulle besig sal aantref. Standerton gee Matla pak slae Standerton Rugbyklub was op 23 Junie die gasheer vir die wedstryd teen Matla 1 waar Standerton met hardlooprugby 96-7 gewen het. Dit was n winderige middag, maar het nie die Standerton-klub veel gepla nie, hulle het 14 drieë aangeteken. Die voor-en agterspelers het mooi gekombineer om binne die eerste paar minute oor die doellyn te gaan vir n drie deur kaptein en agtsteman, Jurgen Steinbach. Dit was een van vyf drieë wat hy aangeteken het en AJ Potgieter het dit verdoel. Matla het nog nie mooi herstel nie toe regtervleuel, Johan Loock, n paar verdedigers uit die grond gehardloop en sy eerste drie van twee aangeteken het. Vanaf die afskop, het Tiaan Potgieter, linkervleuel, die bal in die hande gekry en vanuit sy eie gebied sewe verdedigers geklop en n drie in die hoek aangeteken. Die doelskop was onsuksesvol, die enigste van die wedstryd. Intussen het Loock, Steinbach asook Tommy Gleeson punte op die telbord aangebring wat die rustydtelling op 40-0 te staan laat kom het. Mnr. Jakes Coetzee, voorsitter van die klub, het gesê: As die teenstanders gedink het hulle het die ergste oorleef, het hulle n groot fout begaan. Tydens die tweede helfte, het die Standertonmasjien seepglad geloop. Na n paar fases en a aaie tussen voor-en agterspelers, het Standerton nog agt drieë gedruk, wat verdoel is. Die drieë is deur Steinbach, nog een deur Loock, twee deur Michael Podges ( ank), een deur Hennis Hattingh (stut), en een deur Jacobus Pretorius (haker) aangeteken. Die manne het besluit om die forwards ook kans te gee om na die pale te mik en geeneen het teleurgestel nie, hoewel die skepskopopsie verkies is. Behalwe die 14 drieë wat gedruk is, het die span met die volgende doelskoppe geslaag: Johan Loock (2), AJ Potgieter (4), Jurgen Steinbach (2), Michael Podges (3) en Hennis Hattingh (2) wat die eindtelling 96-7 gemaak het. Die voorspeler van die wedstryd was Jurgen Steinbach: vyf drieë en twee doelskoppe en agterspeler van die wedstryd AJ Potgieter: vier doelskoppe. Die klub het mnr. Learners of Thandeka Primary School obtained second position at khokho in Morgenzon on 19 May. Each team consists of twelve players, but only nine players take the eld and three are substitutes. The game has it origins in India. A match consists of two innings of chasing and running in turns, with each inning taking nine minutes. Eight players kneel down, facing one another and the ninth player is the chaser. Three players from the opposing team play a defensive role. The chaser then runs around the sitters, with the aim of catching the defenders and tries to touch them in order to be out. The chaser then tags the sitter and shouts kho, making that player the new chaser. When the chaser has successfully touched three players, the next three are sent in. A playing eld is rectangular, 36m by 18m or 118ft by 59ft. The runners play in the eld, three at a time and the team that takes the shortest time to touch all the opponents in the eld, wins. There is a pole on each end and the runner can go between two players who are sitting in a zigzag manner, but the chaser is not allowed to turn back while running and go between the players. However, the chaser can go to the pole and touch it and can go back or towards the other side. The game has two referees on opposing sides of the eld and both carry a stopwatch. Each is responsible for giving a decision on the opposite side of the eld. The equipment used in khokho are poles/post, strings, metallic measuring tape, lime powder, wire nails, two watches, types of rings having an inner circumference of 30 cm (12 in) and 40 cm (16 in), score shots (like a whistle, for instance), and equipment to record the results. 24 29 June Pajama-people on the loose Athletes arrived in their pajamas at the Standerton River Park for the weekly parkrun on 16 June. They did not disappoint, mostly adhering to the pajama code. Altogether 104 runners took part in the national event. Fathers were also honoured with a surprise of a chocolate package at the finish line.
