Editor Workbench Hello Fellow modelers and dear friends, As the year rolls on we enter into our model show season. Modelzona is barely a month a away and Scorpfest is not far behind. It s a time of excitement as many of put the finishing touches this year s entries. This month we bring you two pretty cool articles. The first article is an interview with none other than Pat Harrington. Pat has been modeling for almost his entire life and not only does he constantly build amazing looking models, but he is one of the most humble modelers I have ever met. He is always up for a good of model chat and he is always willing to share from his extensive knowledge when it comes to modeling. The second article is Jeff Wallen s hairspray chipping technique. Now, I have seen many modeling magazines that show how to techniques. While many are great and well worth the read I think it is also great to go along a modelers journey as they take the plunge and try a new technique while letting their experiences be the teaching element. Such is the article we present to you this month. Jeff s journey into trying a new technique has yielded amazing results that I am sure we will see on his work very soon. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did. Until next time! Model On! 3
RECENT EVENTS CLUB NEWS Sonoran Desert Model Builder monthly meeting - The monthly meeting for the club was held on September 1 st We were joined by Mike Makowski, Region 10 Coordinator who presented the Chapter with the Chapter of the Year plaque. 7 RECENT EVENTS CLUB NEWS SDMB members Sig Smith and Bruce Culver hosted a Make and Take at the Diamond Children s Medical Center. The Diamond Children s Medical Center offers a bright, healing environment where children feel safe while receiving the advanced care they need from the pediatric specialty physicians and researchers of the University of Arizona Steele Children's Research Center, as well as community pediatric physicians. The make and take gave some of the children the opportunity to break their routines and give them something to enjoy while at the hospital. It really brigthens the childrens day since some of them have been in the hospital for quite a long time. -Sig Smith 7

Behind the Model Many times as we admire a model at a modeling event, magazine or online website questions come to our minds. Most of the times these questions are the usual like, what technique did he use? But often we find ourselves wondering not about the model, but about the modeler. Who is the modeler? What does he or she like best from the hobby? Or, how did he end up scale modeling to begin with? In this section we will try to get a glimpse of these elusive artists behind the pieces; because as is often the case, the story behind the modeler is more interesting than the story of the model itself. This month we bring you an interview with none other than Pat Harrington. Pat has been a member of the Sonoran Desert Model Builders for several years now and he has always delighted us with his beautiful modeling work. DD - How did you get interested in scale modeling? PH - That's an interesting story. My father used to build balsa-wood models when he was young and always had an interest in aircraft. When my brother Michael and I were very young (I was probably 7 and Michael was 5) our parents took us to the Rexall Drug Store in Sherman Oaks and bought us a couple of airplane models and built them with us. Michael and my mom built an early- 60s Blue Angel's jet, and I built a Thunderbirds F-100 Super Sabre. From that time forward, Michael and I built models by just about any and all manufacturers from the early-60s to mid-70s. 10
Behind the Model DD - What part of the hobby is most enjoyable to you? PH - In terms of the actual building, I tend to enjoy the first steps (cockpit construction and painting) and the final steps (decals and weathering) more than all other steps involved in making a model. Sanding and scribing are probably my least favorite tasks. I also love the research, and when I find/buy an item that I've been particularly pining away for (an older kit that has been out-of-production for a while or the latest detail sets from Aires or Ultracast, etc. 11 you never know where your next jolt of inspiration might come from
Behind the Model DD - What is your favorite modeling subject? Without question, WWII single and twin-engine aircraft from all theaters and combatants. PH - What is your mind frame when you enter a model in a contest? (do you expect to win? Or are you in it only for the fun of it?) Lately I've raised my expectations. In fact, this contest-quality mindset occurred almost simultaneously with my involvement/membership with SDMB. I also just love to look closely at all the entries - regardless of my level of personal interest in the subject matter. Good models are "Good models" and you never know where your next jolt of inspiration might come from. 12
Behind the Model DD - What has been the build you have enjoyed the most? PH - I've enjoyed the Hasegawa Shinden Night Fighter the most since it only took two months to complete. There was little to no time to get bent out of shape or fixated on any negatives associated with that kit. The model from which I continue to derive the greatest sense of satisfaction however is undoubtedly my P- 51 Contrary Mary from last year. 13
Behind the Model DD - What is your most memorable experience as a modeler? PH - Without a doubt, the crown jewel of my modeling career has to be having Contrary Mary named "Model of the Year" last year by our club. You guys and gals set the bar extremely high with your own projects, and I can hardly believe you regard my models to be in the same class as many of your own. I m overwhelmed by your talents as well as your generosity. DD - What are some suggestions for somebody who wants to become better at scale modeling? PH - Take your time, focus on sub-assemblies, and don't worry about making mistakes. Most mistakes can be easily overcome with patience and a bit of trial and error. Pat receives the Model of the Year Award in 2015 for his P-51D 14
Behind the Model DD - What are some things you do different now vs when you started as a modeler? PH -I spend a good deal more time focused on the research side of things. With so many variants of the aircraft models that I build out there, you really have to focus on some of the smallest of the small details to be sure you're building the right version of what you plan to build -- especially if the plane is a "personal mount" of a famous Ace. DD - What is the worst blunder you've made while building a model? PH - When I was doing some panel accents on my KI-84 a few years ago, I cleaned my airbrush by turning up the pressure and spraying the thinner on a large post-it note that I was using as a mask on top of the airplane's wing. I didn't hit the wing with overspray, but when I pulled off the post-it note, the thinner had bled through the mask and totally obliterated the paint job underneath. DD Pat, thank you so much for letting us peer into your modeling world. Keep up the great work, we sure enjoy it. PH Dave, its been a pleasure. 15
September 2016 Tips and Tricks WINDEX AND HAIRSPRAY CHIPPING TECHNIQUE FOR MODELING by: Jeff Wallen Hello Fellow modelers I have been looking at new techniques in scale modeling and this one is to do the Hairspray Technique (HS) with a twist. NOTE: I read about this technique in Mike Rinaldi s SM.02 S-65 Tractor book. Now our goal is to use the HS technique and use a mixture of Windex and Water to remove layers of paint and to also create a chipping effect. Big difference here is we are wanting to show paint that is worn away to previous layers not just paint chipping. Materials needed: Test subject in this case a old NASCAR body Windex/water Tamiya acrylic paint (Three colors XF-79 Brown, XF-3 Yellow and XF-55 Deck Tan) ACE Primer Tamiya Lacquer Thinner Model Master Dull Coat Hair Spray Stiff Paint Brush Air brush 16
September 2016 Tips and Tricks Painting Steps and preparation for the test: 1. Clean body and apply a base primer coat (most any primer will do I use Primer from ACE Mix 50/50 XF-79 and Tamiya Lacquer Thinner and apply nice even coat of paint. 3. Once dry I sealed in the brown coat with the Model master Dull coat and let this fully cure overnight. 4. Next day I de-canned the hair spray so I could use an airbrush to apply two coats to the body 17 4.
September 2016 Tips and Tricks Painting Steps and preparation for the test: 5. Now it is time for paint as the hair spray dries quite quickly and cleans up with water. 6. Light coat of XF- 55 deck tan was applied coats of XF-3 yellow was applied being careful to not put on too heavy of a coat of paint is critical as you will see in the next steps 7. 18
September 2016 Tips and Tricks Now onto the Paint Removal process: Will need to have a small cup with a mixture of Water and Windex 50/50. A paper towel and a stiff paint brush. Dip the paint brush into the Windex mixture and then unload most of the liquid into a paper towel. We do NOT want to flood the area. Gently work a small area until you see the paint start to get soft and bubble a little Now it is time to stop, we are trying to just work away the Yellow top layer to expose the deck tan layer. Keep working slow with a damp brush till you see the layers of paint go away leaving a worn faded effect. Too much and you will end up going right down to the brown (rust) layer 19
September 2016 Tips and Tricks Now onto the Paint Removal process: My test results: Never had done this technique before and NEVER did the HS technique before! This is truly a new adventure in modeling and trying something totally new. Tried several brushes, soft brush just doesn t work at all and went with a semi stiff brush. While using the Windex mixture there is a very fine line to when to stop or too much paint is removed once the reaction takes off from the Windex mixture. And discovered I had put on too heavy of a layer of Yellow paint. When removing the paint, I ended up all the way down to the rust (brown) with a nice chipping affect. Some areas where the paint was thinner I did get the desired affect I was looking for showing a faded yellow with the under layer of tan. Cannot get away with not having some chipping. 20
September 2016 Tips and Tricks Now onto the Paint Removal process: TEST #2: Stripped the entire body down to primer with full strength Windex. Followed same base steps as before with the brown sealed in with dull coat. Applied a slightly heavier layer of Deck Tan. Followed with one coat of Yellow (first test was two coats). Windex mixture was changed to 2 parts water and one part Windex. Overall test 2 was better and able to more easily get a fade effect of the colors. Tried to soak an area and wipe it away after a few seconds and this worked but wait too long and you just wipe off all the paint down to the rust layer. 21
September 2016 Tips and Tricks Now onto the Paint Removal process: Thoughts and final Notes: Many factors affect the results. Time you let the paint dry and harden How thick the paint coats are How much hair spray is applied How strong the Windex mixture is and how wet the brush is Learned a lot and not comfortable yet but certainly glad I did the two tests before ever trying this on a real model. And would have to do more testing before I apply this technique. Surprised how easy it is to get the chipping affect with the hair spray. Very cool! Want to thank Dave Brown for lending me the Rinaldi book! Highly recommend you get one of the Tank Art books or one of the SM Series books as they are some of the best modeling books I have read. I am not even an armor builder and I have 4 books on order already and cannot wait to get them. Wow how fun is it to be in this hobby and the ART of Model Building 22
