The work was created and displayed in the context of a campaign by the Association for Democratic Youth of Hungary. 25% of children in Hungary are living under poor conditions. In the homes of children there are no toilets, while children live in unlit flats. It is impossible for them to learn and do their homework in these conditions. The public education system seems to forsake the future of these young people. The goal of Learning Room is to raise awareness of the needs of these children, in order to stop the process of their marginalization. The public installation is part of an action campaign with the goal of explaining in an interactive way, that poverty is the source of dysfunctional development in children, and aims to mobilize citizens to change the situation. The Wild Kitchen Garden received the Agritecture & Landscape Award in We kidnapped an iconic sculpture from Sette Cortelli, a gallery connected to Castello Chiaramonte, a few days before the opening of the newly landscaped garden. The Pink Snail was one of many similar sculptures to be produced by the international artistic collective Cracking Art Group. The snail ( babalucio in Sicilian) symbolized the rhythm of the workshop as well as the life in Sicily. With the appropriation of the mass-produced artwork, our intention was to give it a local identity and create a more personal connection between the artpiece and the people of Favara. After Babalucio made a speech at the opening ceremony, we organised a procession through Favara to bring it back to its former resting place in Sette Cortelli. Babalucism is a lifestyle. A Philosophical Path. Both physical and spiritual. The backpack on the shoulder, house on the back, that is the physical part. The philosophy is simple, the key is: no stress, do best. Never be scared of going slowly, looking around, and taking the time to let the environment influence you. It is curated by Barbara Holub, and takes place in Garage Freyung and in Votivpark-Garage. WIPARK Garage Freyung Wien, September 2016 June links musikraumgarage.at facebook MusikRaumGarage is a public rehearsal room on level -3 of WIPARK Garage Freyung, Vienna. Every Tuesday, musicians of various genres give a performance situated between concert and rehearsal, which can be followed via livestream or viewed later from the archive. The concept elaborated by Dilruba Erkan and Péter Oroszlány originates from the idea of using family garages as rehearsal rooms. Re-using the idea of the garage as an off-space for creative activity, MusikRaumGarage gives musicians access to experiment with the particular sound qualities of an underground parking lot. The raw acoustics of the concrete halls complemented by the sound of passing cars defines the unique qualities of the performance space. Between September 2015 and June 2016 after the project was established it was lead by Stéphane Clor (musical direction) and Péter Oroszlány (art direction). During this period over 30 performances were organized. In the first 6 months the performances were curated by well known musicians from Vienna. Later, MusikRaumGarage organized an open call to give the chance of experimenting with the space to all interested performers. Besides the outstanding musical experiences, MusikRaumGarage recorded an album for the Friendly Guitar Trio and hosted the first Kino am Naschmarkt offspace, as well as the premier of Light-speaker by SoniLumatrice and Denny Lightray. As a final performance we transformed a car into a musical instrument. Patric Redl car Stéphane Clor & Péter Oroszlány Kino am Naschmarkt feat. Salto Capitale 16 17

After a flood in 1862 the river was regulated, and later covered over between Pilgramgasse and Stadtpark. Nowadays it is not possible to access the lower part legally, but the tunnel that connects Stadtpark and Naschmarkt is still a popular space for urban investigators. 21 The Great Transfer performative installation performative installation The Great Transfer Kunst und Ausgleich Collective Alejandra Loreto Miriam Hübl Cosima Terrasse Dieter Lang Lisa Puchner Peter Oroszlany Christoph Steininger concept Cosima Terrasse supervised by Anton Falkeis Herwig Turk The Great Transfer was a project by students of Social Design. In the summer semester 2015, we were invited to contribute to the cultural programme Culture First by the Forum Alpbach. The Great Transfer is concerned with the borders of visibility and audibility. Placed in the center of the Forum Alpbach, there is a cone constructed as an inner court yard, which was the location for this performative installation. The students tried to communicate from their stage, but struggled to be heard. Everyday, they were reading out a memory sequence from a refugee, describing the places he or she had had to leave behind, their houses, and their conceptions of home. These stories were then inscribed into the pebbles that line the floor of the coned atrium; word by word, stone by stone. What was left at the end of this 12 - day intervention was only visible if you looked close enough. On 3rd September 2015, the group gave the opening speech at the Built Environment Symposium. At this event, the stories were recited in a polylogue conversation, they could be heard at clear volume for the first time. Alpbach, Austria 2015 links vimeo.com/

In her book Ruth Wodak analyzes the linguistic strategies employed by right-wing populist parties and shows how they seek to foment fear through the deliberate use of disinformation, falsehoods and fantasised threats. While varietal right-wing populist parties differ depending on their historical and sociopolitical contexts, there is a recognisable pattern in the propaganda methods used. The project Re-Negotiating Politics of Fear in Public Spaces aims at exploring notions of fear by facilitating a public discussion by means of art and design interventions in public space. The objective is to investigate the media s role in the construction of fear and to negotiate and visualize the fears and hopes of people through artistic means, in order to challenge right-wing supremacy and their tactical play with people s concerns for the future. The rhetoric of Politics of Fear is constructing imaginary walls between us (the natives ) and them (the outsiders ). At the same time very real walls are constructed on the borders inside and outside Europe too. POF decided to implement a barbed wire fence to make a clear reference to the newly built borders inside and outside of Europe, and used it as a display mechanism for the collected fears and hopes for Austria and Europe in general; to make the invisible walls visible. The intervention at TBA21 (Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary) in Vienna attempted to probe the public space with a physical installation, as well as provoke a public reaction with an open invitation: Früchte für Gedanken (literally meaning; fruit for thoughts ). A variety of fruits were laid out on picnic tables, which broke through a gap in the barbed wire fence. The fence was stretched out to a length of fifteen meters and used as a symbol for borders. People could sit down on either side of the fence and share their fears and hopes with the research team. Participants expressed their fears by writing on papers and mounting these into the fence s framework to be readily accessible and discussed upon by others. A crucial aspect of the intervention PoF Collective Ulduz Ahmadzadeh Jana Alaraj Sassan Bahmanadabi LaSchandré Coetzee Martin Färber Michel Gölz Gianna Lui Ruth Mateus-Berr Péter Oroszlány Karolina Plaškova Milly Reid Christina Schraml Alessia Scuderi Enrico Tomassini Julia Wohlfahrt spatial concept Péter Oroszlány different locations TBA 21 Augarten, Vienna was that the research group were actively listening to the participants. The concept was to project an exaggerated vision of the future, by installing an object that symbolically suggested an Islamic presence in the square. We wanted to be careful not to appropriate any religious artefacts or elements that might cause an offence, yet the course of conceptual development resulted in a design for an appropriation of the Kaaba cube in Mecca. For this intervention at the end of September 2016, POF designed and built a 4 x 4 m cube structure that enclosed the central tree of the square. To heighten the Islamic metaphor, we recorded a piece of original music that resembled the Muezzin call to prayer in auditory style, yet with the lyrics, fürchte dich nicht (German for: No need to be afraid). By using a megaphone to project the music, the song resounded through the neighbouring streets and attracted a significant amount of attention from residents and daily users of the public square. In order to make the space more approachable, approximately 300 miniature black cubes were placed around the main structure. This created a buffer zone between the public square s perimeter and the center. People were able to walk across the open space, yet still be captured by the installation. The interior of the cube was set-up with carpets, floor cushions and benches, so to create a relaxed atmosphere for discussion, in contrast to the provocative exterior. Members of POF were present inside, and were there to facilitate a discussion revolving around the display of fears collected from the previous action in Vienna. concept Péter Oroszlány Milly Reid spatial design Jana Alaraj Martin Färber Péter Oroszlány Milly Reid sound design Sebastian Kraner graphic design LaSchandré Coetzee Production Martin Färber Christina Schraml 47

25 Politics of Fear Fear Chamber participatory interventions participatory intervention Politics of Fear Fear Chamber on from the previous action, and to initiate the process for the current one. To emphasize the role that the media plays in fear construction, the template of the newspaper alludes to one of Austrian s most known tabloid newspapers. Over the course of two days in Linz, the mounting collection of fears meant that more and more discussions were opening a fresh and current dialogue on the notions of fear in public space. As such, new points of contact could be founded, and new points of departure of the project were established

26 Politics of Fear Notice of Fear Inspection public intervention public intervention Politics of Fear Notice of Fear Inspection PoF Collective La Schandre Cotzee Péter Oroszlány Martin Färber Christina Schraml concept La Schandre Cotzee Péter Oroszlány 14th Participatory Design Conference Participatory Design Conference (PDC) brings together a multidisciplinary and international group of researchers and practitioners from multiple fields encompassing a wide range of issues that emerge around cooperative design. Aarhus, Denmark links pofcollective.org Our Notice of Fear Inspection action was inspired by baggage inspection notices that are sometimes found in suitcases which have gone through the custom control of certain airports. When a baggage is deemed suspicious, the authorities at border control may open and inspect the baggage without the consent or even presence of the property owner. A note of the inspection is left in the suitcase, explaining the procedure and emphasizing the importance thereof. This experience causes the owner of the baggage not only to question their contribution towards the invasion of privacy but, it also contributes towards the cycle of fear creation as it assumes that there is a threat that needs to be taken control of. Using the baggage inspection notice dealt out by the Department of Homeland Security (United States of America) as starting point, we designed the Notice of Fear Inspection leaflets (see below). The conference similar to an airport in the sense that participants come from all over the world, and for a short period we would all be sharing the same space. The idea thus, was to place leaflets in the bags of as many conference participants as we could. This was done discreetly, so that the owner of the bag would find it later stimulating a similar experience to that of authoritative control but in the same vain we tried to be respectful to the privacy of the participants. The information of the flyer also led the suspicious carrier of fear to our blog, they could find further information and contact us. We managed to pass out a number of notices at the conference and beyond it borders on the streets of Aarhus. Due to the controversial method and our half-incognito it was hard to get face to face feedbacks, but several times we could catch some conversations about the fear inspection cards. It definitely raised attention on the topic and on our project
