1 B1 - Thursday, July 26, 2012 LIFESTYLES The Conservative Old--timey medicine Naturopathic doctor Reba Bailey recently opened a practice in Carrollton BY AMANDA SEXTON FERGUSON EDITOR AND PUBLISHER CARROLLTON Naturopathic doctor Reba Bailey treats patients around the world. Those who seek her Naturopathic medicine are as diverse as the conditions from which they suffer, and Bailey, a master herbalist, uses natural, less-invasive means to treat various conditions. Bailey refers to what she does as "old-timey medicine" - using tried and true plant-based, natural medicines passed down through the centuries. She explained that using a natural approach to health is something she grew up seeing from her paternal grandmother and maternal grandfather. "My grandmother lived to be 99," Bailey said. "She believed a lot in herbal medicine. My mother's father was very healthy. He believed in eating healthy, exercise. He took honey and apple cider vinegar every day of his life. I've always been exposed to this sort of thing, so as I got older, it just kind of fell into place." Bailey received her education at Delta State University and the University of Mississippi before getting her Naturopathic medicine degree from Clayton College in Alabama. "Don't get me wrong," Bailey said. "Modern medicine is a wonderful thing. I am the first person to tell you that if I am in a car accident, take me to the emergency room. But there were some things that didn't make sense to me. It's not just about treating the symptoms but looking at the root cause of the problem." A Parasitologist, someone who studies parasites and their hosts, by specialty, Bailey started her own company in 2006, using herbal medicine to kill harmful microscopic parasites that live inside the body. These parasites are often at the root of many medical condititions. She said she has treated patients for gout, anemia, fibromyalgia, obesity, staph infection, arthristis, respiratory conditions, digestive problems, bacterial infections, chronic pain, and so on. "I modernized my grandmoth- er's formula and came up with a method to clean the body from head to toe," Bailey said. She explained that what she does is what is referred to as complimentary medicine, alternative medicine, holistic medicine, or traditional medicine. "There are some wonderful advancements in modern medicine," Bailey said. "But there is also a place for what we do. I'm very middle-of-the-road. I don t believe God put a human being on earth to take 20 different medicines a day, and my Christianity led to my beliefs." By word of mouth, patients have come to Bailey from as far as California and Great Britain. She has even treated the rich and famous. "I enjoy what I do. I like helping people. It's interesting." In the United States alone, Above: Naturopathic doctor Reba Bailey and her family recently moved to Carrollton. Since then, she has opened a Green Street Health on the Carrollton Square. Left: Bailey, a master herbalist, mixes her own natural, plant-based medicines from roots (burdock root, shown), herbs, and other natural products. (Photos by Amanda Sexton Ferguson) Bailey said there are 3,500 Naturopathic doctors, and like modern medicine, they are educated in the same basic sciences and the latest advancements in science. They also are required to complete four years of clinical nutrition, acupuncture, homeopathic medicine, botanical medicine, physical medicine and counseling. "There aren't that many of us, but that is mainly because the education costs the same as going to [traditional] medical school," Bailey said. "There are also restrictions we must follow. We can't write prescriptions, can't be affiliated with a hospital, and can't do lab work." Bailey said all her herbal medicines are made by her. "[The ingredients] are all organic and made in the U.S.," Bailey said. Bailey, a native of the Clarksdale area, recently moved from Oxford to Carrollton, where she recently opened Green Street Health. "I can work anywhere," Bailey said. She said initially when she moved to Carrollton, she planned to limit her practice and focus on writing a book about her field, but after treating a patient or two she met during her son's Little League games, her local practice grew. "Then, I was practicing out of my home, and I made house calls," Bailey said. "My husband [Steve] said I should open a clinic. We've been opened since July 2." Bailey's office is located behind the Carrollton Courthouse on Green Street in the historic Buckland-Browning House. Bailey said she and her husband, a retired military officer, decided to move to Carrollton to embrace the small-town life. The family purchased one of the town's historic homes, Cedar Hill, and her eight-year-old son, Max, is a student at Carroll Academy. Bailey said she wanted that environment where her son would be surrounded by friends in the community, school, and church. "We love Carrollton," she said. "It is such a unique place."

Faith and Six Rounds By David Haggerty Providence Baptist Church Some time ago I was sitting around with a few pastor friends talking about nearly everything under the sun. The conversation somehow came around to a time in the life of one of the other pastor's life when his car broke down in a not so friendly part of the town he was driving through. He called for a tow truck and waited. He said it wasn't long however before some younger men from the community noticed the broken down car and began to walk around the parking lot where he had pulled over. We asked him, jokingly. about his prayer life. He said he was praying alright but that he also had his hand on his revolver that was fully loaded with six rounds of ammunition. We laughed at his response. but later I began to think how that situation illustrates a truth from scripture. In the book of Nehemiah, when the walls of Jerusalem were being rebuilt the Bible records that, "So it was, from that time on, that half of my servanis worked at construction, while the other half held the spears, the shields, the bows, and wore armor. When God used Moses He said in Exodus 4: 'Now therefore, go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall say." The truth that we seem to have forgotten as a church is that there is a practical. side to our faith. In Matthew 28: 19 we are told to... go.. and "make" disciples of all nations. Matthew chapter 5 tells us we are to "be" salt and "'be" light in the world in which we live. It has been my experience that the Holy Spirit will not go for you, but He will always go with you. People today seemingly want God to do everything. They just want to sit back and watch it happen. The Bible says, "An evil and adulteress generation seeks after a sign... " Dear friend if today you find yourself in a situation that is beyond you I encourage you to look to the teaching of scripture. You do everything you can and then trust in God to everything that He wills. CHURCH ANNOUNCEMENTS July 28 The pastor and members of Young Chapel M. B. Why they decided to roll and fall off the house at the exact time Mama was trying to get those rascally potatoes we'll never know. But she never had that chore again! Have you ever been caught by the unexpected in a terrifying way? Have your fears ever "come true" in some form? The Bible tells us what to do with our fears. "I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust." Surely he will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.you will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, "(Psalms 91:2-5) King David had many unexpected twists and turns in his life---and real reasons to be afraid of his enemies. Yet, he reminds us that God is our protector, and we don't have to be afraid. "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love." (I John 4:18) God loves us. He says he wants good for us, not bad. When God disciplines us for sin He is trying to get our attention to repent and get back on the right track. God's discipline is to restrict the amount sin and trouble we can get into! It is a good thing. As we come to understand the love God has for us that drew Christ to the cross as a substitute for us, to take on the results of our sin, to die, and then as Savior to rise again---then we begin to see who God is. God loves us. God protects us. We are safe in him. No matter if snakes fall from unexpected places! This Devotional and Directory is made possible by the following businesses who encourage all of us to attend worship services. BAPTIST Carrollton Baptist 113 W.
