2 INTRODUCING DR. MARTENS: SS17 SEASONAL DIRECTION For SS17, Dr. Martens uses the 1990s global phenomenon of grunge as its core inspiration. This historically important counter-culture music scene exploded from the north-west coast of the USA, and in a short space of time dominated the world s music industry, charts and live circuit. Dr. Martens found themselves at the heart of this massive explosion of alternative thinking and music the 1460 was soon championed by millions of grunge fans worldwide. Festival culture also experienced a new popularity, which was also the moment that Dr. Martens sandals first experienced mass popularity. This is reflected in the collection, with new versions of long-standing classics, the re-introduction of Lost Archive styles as well as seasonal sandals. The eventual evolution of grunge s low-key, thrift store chic into high-end catwalk collections is also referenced. The individuality and eclectic nature of grunge fashion is also reflected in the use of tie-dye prints and an undercurrent of utility styling, as well as rugged leathers running through the offering. This mass of influences has been consumed and used to create a collection that references the 1990s, and in particular grunge, but with product that is sharply relevant and very contemporary. 17 MADE IN ENGLAND JAPANESE DENIM INSPIRATION - BORO FABRIC (Left) The Pascal 8-Eye Boot is made with a genuine Indigo dyed fabric sourced from Japan and inspired by Japanese patchwork known as Boro. The word Boro translates as rags or scraps of cloth and is used to describe items which have been lovingly patched up and repaired over the years a trait originally understood to be a popularised by Japanese villagers in remote and rural areas. TUSCON LEATHER (Left) The Whiton 8-Eye Boot, Torriano 3-Eye Shoe and Eye Brogue Shoe use the premium Italian Tuscon leather which has a very soft and tactile feel. Tuscon leather is processed using natural organic vegetable materials which gives a natural aesthetic to the footwear. The grain surface is left naked with no finish so the true character of the natural leather can show through. STINGRAY LEATHER (Opposite) This premium Stingray leather used on the Pascal 8-eye boot and eye shoe in black is an unusual choice, a faux natural skin that is often overshadowed by more common animal prints and textures. The leather used here is an exotic printed material that mimics the natural, randomised textures of a stingray s multicoloured skin. Dr. Martens offer a comprehensive Made In England range. Both classic and innovative styles are available in a variety of colours and leather treatment. Constructed at the Cobb s Lane factory in Wollaston, Northamptonshire, England.
