As an opera diretor whose work has been treasured all over the world, he also has founded two of the biggest and most imperative opera ompanies in the UK, the European Chamber Opera in 1992 and Holland Park Opera Resident Company in here in Bangkok where he established Grand Opera Thailand in April 2012 providing potent Thai singers with a platform to perform exellently. So I m looking for tehnial exellene from the voal point of view as well as the physial; you must have an idea of the type that you want your ast to be like. You also must be prepared to go with the singer that will bring in some other elements that you haven t thought of transmitting to you. Most importantly, though, I look for ommuniation; we're looking for a bunh of people who are going to take the opera out of the book and transform it into a living organism. Having aomplished things worldwide, do you find any signifiant differenes working here in Thailand? the fat that everyone seems to be enjoying themselves muh more than they do in Europe. Thais seem to have a muh greater joy of life whih is perfet when it omes to making musi. So, in some way, you are more enthusiasti while working in a high level in Europe an be intimidating and restriting. There s great keenness to learn whih makes my life a lot easier. I've done a lot of master lasses all over the world, but the enthusiasm here is quite overwhelming. The enthusiasm, the sense of humour, the joy, and the fat that they work extremely hard. Yes, there are many positive differenes here. Do we have many Thai talents in opera? Thai singers are fantasti! There's one thing that I ve notied more than anything and I said this to everybody who asked the same question is that the inheriting beauty of tone in Thai voies is unlike anything I've heard before. It was so inredible and amazing to see almost a hundred khon I played was the monkey god Hanumarn. I would dane around, jump and somersault. I found learning so enjoyable. So I deided to study this ompletely, and after that the teaher assigned me different haraters to play. What makes khon so unique? Khon is representative of the Thai art, tradition and ulture beause it mixes these reative forms in a highly unique and reative dane drama. Khon inludes poetry (plots), dane (horeography), lyris, Thai musi, ostumes, props, design, lighting, and et. All these things are needed and ombined together to reate one khon performane. How have you benefited from studying khon? Khon has given me lots of good friends who are in my lass. Also, khon had inspired my life and makes me a better person. All the money I have earned from performing khon has helped new ar paid by myself from my involvement with khorn. How do you feel when a khon performane has been adapted to film? First, we have to aept that khon lassial dane is symbol of the beauty of Thai ulture. The deliay of how to perform khon also represents the value of its self. Khon seems quite hallenging. Can about it? I think not many people have seen a lot of khon performanes. Many Thais, espeially younger people, enjoy other types of live performanes and onerts. So a lot of people don t know muh about his history or even where a khon performane is being held. However, khon is not that hard to learn if interested. The hardest thing, I believe, is whether you will try it and then to try your best at it. If not. I started khon when I was very young, and I have stayed with it all the time. So for me, I an t say its harder than anything else worth doing. Normally where do you go to see khon? Whih plaes do you like most? I normally go to any plae that performs khon. But if asked my favorite plae, love to see khon at the National Theatre nearby Thammasat University. For almost four deades, images of Father Joseph Maier walking on the streets of Klong Toey, talking to the loals, taking are of the sik and teahing the hildren have beome a ommon sight and a part of the livelihood of the slaughterhouse, the poorest and largest slum ommunity in Thailand. "My earliest hildhood memories were those of Father Joe," says Anhana Chaloeyrat, the Head of Sponsorship Program at The Human Development Foundation - more ommonly known as the Mery Centre. Like most of the staff members at the Mery Centre, Anhana's life was touhed and influened by Father Joe's selfless determination and dediation to help the poor. Anhana grew up in the slaughterhouse neighborhood, studied with Father Joe in one of his kindergartens, and her sister's eduation was sponsored by the HDF. At the end of her ollege years, Anhana interned at the HDF and had the privilege of working losely with Father Joe - an opportunity that transformed her life. The Mery Centre now has 22 kindergartens providing quality eduation to thousands of preshool hildren. It is also sponsoring 500 poor hildren and young adults for their higher eduation, sheltering more than 300 orphans, providing finanial aids on housing restoration to the needed, proteting street hildren's rights, and helping HIV vitims who were turned away by their families. The foundation is ommitted to its original mission: To stand together with the poor, hand in hand and heart to heart. One of the examples that best reflets the long-term ommitment and sustainable development resolution of Father Joe is the Community Credit Union program. In the past, no legal finanial institutions would grant the residents a loan. This led to external debt risis and illegal debt olleting - the root auses of rime and violene that plagued the ommunity. "But now, we have a safe and dependable institution that we an turn to for our finanial needs," Prapai further explains, "and beause we operate it ourselves, the profits return to everyone in the ommunity - the development of a sustainable eonomy." Even though the Human Development Foundation has ahieved muh in improving the onditions of the poor, still, lives in the slum are far from easy. What they need the most is better aeptane and attention from the soiety. As Anhana has put it, "virtues an always be found in our small ommunity.
