Difficult words, phrases, topical allusions, place-names and literary references are annotated whenever possible, and to the fullest extent within space limitations. While reviewing Kipling's own writings, I have found particularly helpful the 5672 pages of The Readef)s Guide to Rudyard Kipling's Work, prepared by Roger Lancelyn Green, Alec Mason, and especially R. E. Harbord between 1961 and 1972 (Canterbury: Gibbs & Sons; later, Bournemouth: Boscombe Printers). Gerber and Edward Lauterbach, and published in English Fiction in Transition, III, nos 3-5 (I 960), and VIII, nos 3-4 (I 965). Three biographies of Kipling, based on intensive research and travel as well as first-hand information, are collectively indispensable: Charles Carrington's Rudyard Kipling (London: Macmillan, I955, revised in I978); Angus Wilson's The Strange Ride of Rudyard Kipling (London: Seeker & Warburg, I977); and Lord Birkenhead's Rudyard Kipling (London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson, I 978). I regret that the scope of this work prevents me from drawing more often on the surprisingly ample literature dealing with Rudyard Kipling's parents and family. They were colourful in their own right, and superb achievers of almost anything they set out to do; fascinating information about their lives and accomplishments turns up in many memoirs.
