PROGRAMME AIM & OBJECTIVE The general aim of the programme is to train students into competent professionals for the fashion business, including textiles, apparel, retail and design and in other related organisations. These students will play an active role in the development of the fashion and textiles industry both locally and internationally after graduation. In addition to their professional competencies, the programme will also cultivate other essential competencies of the students that meet the demands of today s society. They will have abilities such as teamwork and leadership, entrepreneurship, and lifelong learning. They will be creative problem solvers with relevant skills, and have the ability to think critically and creatively. The students will gain effective communication and interpersonal skills, and become highly biliterate proficient and trilingual. They will become educated global citizens, demonstrate social and national responsibility, show interest in local and international affairs, and exhibit cultural appreciation and a global outlook. PROGRAMME STRUCTURE All students who are admitted with HKDSE results will start the programme with 3 common semesters, in which they will be provided with a foundation of the various primary activities in the fashion and textiles industry. All students, after the common semesters, will be streamed into one of five specialisms according to their individual preference. For the 2 design specialisms, Design and Knitwear Design & Technology, students have to pass a Design & Drawing Test and/or undergo an interview for admission. A student may elect to take the Design & Drawing Test and/or undergo the interview prior to admission to the Scheme or take the test and undergo the interview at the beginning of the third semester. In principle, all students are offered a free choice of specialisms. However, in view of operational considerations, a contingency procedure will be followed in the rare event that there is oversubscription of a specialism. Each specialism has a threshold student number determined by the teaching resources of the department. The contingency procedure will take effect when the threshold is reached. In the contingency procedure, students are required to declare a list of selected specialisms in their order of preference. Students who have applied to an oversubscribed specialism will be placed on a waiting list in accordance with their academic performance during the past 3 semesters. Students with less satisfactory performance will be given their second preference on their list of selected specialisms. In each subsequent semester after admission to a specialism, compulsory core subjects of each specialism will be offered, and a wide range of elective subjects will also be included to enrich the learning experience of students. Furthermore, students will undertake mandatory language and general education subjects as well as take part in the WIE to fulfil the general university requirements. Students who are admitted via senior year placement will start their specialism study at the time of admission. These students are expected to complete the programme in 2 years with a maximum registration period of 4 years.

15 26 27 PROGRAMME CHARACTERISTICS Based on their desired career and academic performance, students can pursue studies in any one of the following 5 specialisms To impart students with knowledge on fashion products and production processes, and their applications in technical, economic, managerial and commercial contexts. The knowledge hones students into industry leaders in product development, process innovation and production management in the textiles and apparel industry. TECHNOLOGY To nurture the creativity and design skills of students. Students will gain an awareness of current and emerging technologies in the fashion and manufacturing environments, as well as a better understanding of marketing and business practices. DESIGN KNITWEAR DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY To train students to be competent in this highly specialised design profession. The essence of the training delivered lies in the merging of technology with design. Technology provides a solid foundation upon which design skills are built. In this respect, yarn and knitting technologies are the two major areas that comprise and enrich the design curriculum. Design is the primary component of this specialism. The technological element of this specialism differentiates knitwear designers from fashion designers. RETAIL AND MARKETING INTIMATE APPAREL AND ACTIVEWEAR To provides essential academic and practical knowledge of intimate apparel and activewear including integration of design and technological aspects. The specialism offers a supportive and inspiring learning environment to students so that they can create imaginative designs by applying analytical and problem solving skills. The specialism also encourages independent judgment and critical thinking in students for new areas of development in intimate apparel and activewear. To provide fundamental principles, contemporary practices, and operational knowledge of fashion retail and marketing are outlined. In particular, the specialism aims to develop the skills of students in defining, analysing, and solving business problems in fashion retail and marketing, from fast to luxury fashion, and of fashion sourcing, buying, market research, store management and distribution of fashion products in both local and international contexts.
