La Palma, LINES OF THE COLLECTION Desigual presents the OI17 collection inspired by the women playing a leading role in the subculture scenes of the 1960s, 70s and 80s, which the brand has reinterpreted from a 21st century perspective. Scenes include the all-nighters and the most uncompromising 1960s underground scene on the US West Coast, the early vogueing of the 1980s, Californian punk and the new Spanish wave. Scenes which Desigual now updates with the casual and creative codes that characterise the brand. Tartan, flowers, tricot, sports inspiration, animal prints and the colour red are the fashion trends of this season. This is a collection in which the apparently dissonant mixture of styles, garments and materials is the means to define personal looks in which collage is the way to innovate in unexpected and surprising mixes. A slender and comfortable silhouette uses extended lengths in long coats, outer garments and dresses, and shorter lengths in miniskirts and pinafores. A meticulously designed season filled with details in which down jackets, biker jackets, bomber jackets, tartan trousers, wrap cardigans and tricot sweaters are the star pieces. 7 MARÍA CLÉ THURSDAY 14 SEPTEMBER 12:15h Jardines de Cecilio Rodríguez, Retiro. Menéndez Pelayo, 67 Winning proposal of the Spanish national competition «El Laboratorio», an ECOEMBES initiative. A collection made of recycled fabrics from renewable material recovered from the sea floor. Designs modelled on the body, where overlapping fabrics, pleats and experimentation with eliminating stitches leads to voluminous garments. Ample, loose-fitting silhouettes. Handmade irregular honeycomb fabric positioned on different parts of the garment, distorting the figure and facilitating mobility. A timeless proposal in which varying check prints mix with plain and striped fabrics. A collection full of allusions to the land, tradition, customs and marvellous memories. Velázquez, 8 PALOMO SPAIN For his upcoming Spring/Summer 2018 collection, designer Alejandro Gómez Palomo found major inspiration in the world of travel, especially the aesthetic of the characters surrounding hotels. The Córdoba-based firm aims to represent each member of the inner workings of hotels for its upcoming presentation, which will take place in September. Dressing gown-like fabrics, cloth sandals, airy fabrics with lots of lift, classic cut suits for hotel workers, and chiffons and silks for guests who walk down the runway with leather suitcases, rhinestones, light and a lot of colour. Alcalá, 50 Autumn/Winter Collection PARIS JE T AIME On the 35th anniversary of the brand s creation, Roberto Verino s collection for this season is an homage to the city where it all began: Paris. The designer takes a non-nostalgic look into the past to show a strong and attractive woman on stage whose personality makes the aesthetic of the 70s, the glory decade of French fashion, modern and up to date. The Roberto Verino woman strides strong in warm and enveloping fabrics like tweed and craft knitwork, while men sophisticatedly wear outerwear enhanced with water repellent woolen fabrics and high quality wool cloth. A very versatile collection which sees the Roberto Verino man and woman dressed with a relaxed elegance at any time of day. A collection that in a colour palette which goes from pure and off-whites, beiges and sands to turquoise, olive green, burnt orange and marine. An aspiring young actress begins her journey to the mecca of film. Throughout this show, we will see her arrive in the city wrapped in silk organza fabrics in natural colours, attend auditions in character for the role she is going for, get her big break, and triumph on the red carpet dressed in colourful tulles and Swarovski crystals. Lingerie items will stand out due to their colour and contrast with the dresses, which will flow transparent over the models. The reality in South American at the present time is very different, but the designs that FRANCIS MONTESINOS offers for the 2018 Spring/Summer season do indeed serve as a vehicle for uniting cultures from different countries, each with their own strongly distinct personalities. From the passion that Mexico transmits through its powerful folklore and the unyielding elegance of the great María Félix, to the Caribbean, feminine and sensual flavour of the Puerto Rican actress Rita Moreno. From the exaggerated exoticism and mysterious halo which surrounded the Peruvian singer Yma Sumac and the colour explosion and Brazilian baroque style of Carmen Miranda. And to even things out, the sobriety of the great lady of the Argentinian stage, Libertad Lamarque. All of them great artists, inimitable and unforgettable. 15 DOLORES CORTÉS FRIDAY 15 SEPTEMBER 14:30 h Room Mercedes Benz PHILOSOPHY A collection which draws from the ancestral work of secluded tribes, fused and reinvented with a graphic touch. The influences of Primitive Art and a Cubist undercurrent form large areas of bold colour, fragmenting lines and surfaces. Handmade braidwork and knotwork contrast with avant-garde, multiple-perspective shapes. A broken colour palette dominated by mustard yellow. Fabrics with glints of gold foil give an air of sophistication and magnificence. Millennia of intercultural exchange which give way to a collection of contrasts between the technical and the manual. 16 ION FIZ FRIDAY 15 SEPTEMBER 14:30 h Room Mercedes Benz Ion Fiz presents his 32nd collection for men and women, and, for the first time in his career, Dahia, his fierst children's collection in collaboration with the Lal La Buya Melilla charity project, an unprecedented initiative in spanish fashion. DAHIA, in homage to the Berber warrior queen Dahia Al-Käina, which in Arabic means «priestess», is the title of the Spring/Summer 2018 collection from Ion Fiz. Inspired by the city of Melilla, it is based on the fusion of ideologies in a place where four cultures: christians, muslims, jews and hindus, live alongside each other. Ion Fiz has embodied the cultural diversity of Melilla in the richness of the fabrics and textures, exuberant colours and flawless craftsmanship: jacquard and damask fabrics loom spun from linen and silk threads, embroidery and prints inspired by the botanic and exotic landscape of Melilla and its modernist architecture, drawing from an ethnic aesthetic which the designer has translated into refined lines and European cuts. 17 AGATHA RUIZ DE LA PRADA FRIDAY 15 SEPTEMBER 16:00 h Room Bertha Benz The Spring/Summer 2018 collection is an homage to Balenciaga. Big volumes adorned with stripes and spots, enormous monocolour ruffles in silk satins and gingham organzas, and padding which gives the classic Michelin-style silhouette. Cocktail dresses with hand-painted 3D flowers, skirts with round multicolour trays, overskirts and capes, embossed sleeves and see-through overdresses. 18 DEVOTA & LOMBA FRIDAY 15 SEPTEMBER 17:30 h Room Mercedes Benz HYPNOTIC «The colour white sounds like a silence which can suddenly be understood. It is the primal nothingness, the nothing before the beginning, before the birth. Perhaps it is the sound of the Earth in the white times of the ice age» (Kandinsky, 1910). A set of organic lines introduce a new challenge in the constant investigation of pattern to craft a unique object. In a dialogue between dynamic and inert textures we propose the freedom which rises from oppression, which wraps the fabric in honeycomb then releases it. Using monochrome materials, we construct a harmonious accord in linens, silks and cottons, predominated by white. As a background note, the oriental undertones take us to a sensitive environment of unreality and purity, an internal space where everything breaks down to be reborn. 22 AILANTO SATURDAY 16 SEPTEMBER 11:30 h Room Bertha Benz For its Spring/Summer 2018 collection, Ailanto took inspiration in the works of American impressionist painter Jessie Arms Botke ( ). Born in Chicago, she studied in her native city s Art Institute and reached fame with her studies of exotic birds, including peacocks, cockatoos and swans. The birds are represented in minutely detailed natural settings. Her works are often compared to the illustrations seen on antique Japanese decorative screens. A time in which believers look for the type of message they want to hear for their earthly salvation and individual greed. Ultimately, we are living in times where this apparently «free» and «great» reality will end up taking vengeance on all of us. The timeless story in which politicians become televangelists and voters become believers. This is the premise which «Preachers & Believers» was developed from. 24 ROBERTO TORRETTA SATURDAY 16 SEPTEMBER 14:30 h Room Bertha Benz ROBERTO TORRETTA SS/18 The joy of travel, the most sophisticated nights on the magical island where trends are born, the game of connecting past, present and future and the combination of fabrics and patterns which alter the message of a garment are the inspiration for Roberto Torretta s Spring/Summer 2018 collection. The designer creates a collection which vibrantly connects different lengths and volumes with, resulting in a group of different silhouettes with one common denominator: the emphasis on the waist. Jersey fabric is back with a vengeance in this collection, with a metallic silver effect or in old rose. The silhouette is fitted and draped with midi lengths and unstructured skirts. Orange sorbet and red berry crêpe, mahogany satin, old silver lamé and embroidered tone-on-tone silks in a butter colour will define a shorter, loose-fitting silhouette, with strategically made cuts, gores and in some cases historically inspired triple-ballooned sleeves. A series of architectural glazes become dresses through the use of shape memory materials. Light architectural plans float down the catwalk. The model gets into one of the plans, which is lowered onto her body. After a few moments, this skin begins to move and progressively change shape. The architectural skin has become a fabric skin; a dress. The fabrics used to generate these garments are light architectural materials (thermal insulation foil, decorative dichroic sheets for glass, and so on). Textures and stencils are made using digital manufacturing technology like laser cutting. In turn, manual techniques are used like making silicon sheets, giving the collection an ethereal, translucent feel, enhancing the look of the skin. The dresses use shape-memory polymers and shape-memory alloys like Nitinol. By applying heat and electricity, these materials are capable of changing shape, then going back to their original form at room temperature. Neither does poetry, or those brief moments when it is difficult to tell the difference between illusion and reality. It s funny how happy being aware that we re lost makes us. This project stems from the result of the fascination for traditional modelling and pattern making. It is a study of post-nuclear fashion and its evolution on the streets of Tokyo and Korea, applied to the setting of western fashion. We reconsider the collective normativity which associates specific garments to a male or female gender, cemented by the fact that in the West, we overlook pieces as wonderful as the male skirt. Normativity is a set of obligatory precepts. They govern society. Fashion and the way individuals use it play a key role in the evolution and understanding of the culture we live in. We start from the idea that a classically tailored suit can morph into a different garment, and the collection experiments with light fabrics and the volumes these generate on the body. The collection is constructed on 22 looks with garments that speak to us in blues, vanillas and touches of greyish reds and mauves. A collection built around a group of well-off teenage thieves made up of Rachel Lee, Nick Purgo, Alexis Neiers, Tess Taylor and Courtney Ames, called the «Bling Ring». In 2009, they were arrested and charged in California for burgling the Hollywood mansions of various celebrities the group were really fanatical about. Bling and accessories like earrings, hats and belts are especially significant in this collection, directly alluding to the stolen objects. In Where s mine?, there is a special focus on layering and the use of hoods to represent the need not to be discovered by security cameras. The use of pastel colours like pink, blue, beige and white represent the more candid side of the Bling Ring, that is to say the side they show to those closest to them hiding their true lifestyles. In contrast, we see bright and vivid colours which represent the fun the group had, their lack of remorse, and the ability to brag publicly about what they had done. Ultimately, is it us a graphic telling of a story about fanaticism, fascination and crime in the 21st century narrated look by look in an objective way, finding beauty in the forbidden. The combination of fashion and art, along with craftsmanship, define a new concept of streetwear. Experimenting with fabrics and studying volume are the brand s strong points, along with new techniques like tattoos on garments. The concept of tattoos was the starting point for the design of the collection. This concept has been applied to garments using various methods, introducing materials like latex, de-contextualising their use by adding volume or using them as prints, embroidered tulle and techniques like devoré on velvet or tattoos on leather. The variety of materials co-existing in the collection creates a sense of the ordered chaos which surrounds the brand s concept and philosophy. Some looks are special due to the richness of the fabric, others for the use of volume or more elaborate patterns. The collection can be divided into several parts, creating a progression which represents a story. Each garment is hand made and conceived as an individual piece, making each one unique. 66 SPONSORS SAMSUNG AND THE WORLD OF FASHION The link between fashion and technology, which Samsung has been leading for years, will become clear at a new edition of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid, the biggest international fashion event. By supporting innovative projects by young creators, Samsung explores new dimensions in design and technology applied to the field of fashion. For the ninth edition in a row, the technology firm is taking part in this fashion show as part of its commitment to finding connections between fashion and technology in order to incorporate these improvements into people s daily lives. Samsung continues to support young talent by spearheading a new edition of the Samsung EGO Innovation Project. The winners, ZAP&BUJ, will present their collection Wall dress on 19 September. This contest awards projects by emerging designers that combine fashion and technology at any stage of the creative process.
